Congrats! Keep us posted - I'm sure you'll find some extra fans for whichever program you've joined here : )

Is it an assistant gig or head honcho?

Congrats! Will you also coach at a local club on the side? It seems even MM d1 assistants coach on side, esp in fall. What is the longest van ride in your new conference? Does D2 have more geographically oriented conferences vs D1 with teams scattered across US? Do you speak any additional languages that will help with recruiting? If I remember right from past posts, I think you played for a team in the D2 Peach State conference. Best wishes for your new team with the hope in the near future you can bring them to Georgia to fall ITA Cup.

I will coach on the side! It seems like a great way to supplement my income. I think the longest ride we do is roughly 6 hours long? I could be mistaken. I know we will travel to Florida at some point which will be long (hoping for a flight lol). From my volunteer coaching job and to this one, it does seem like the geographic orientation of other teams closer than what you see in D1. I’m currently learning French and polish to help with recruitment! And close! I played in the gulf south conference.
I would love to make it to the ITA cup in fall. I love Rome and it was such a delight this past season to bring a player from the team I volunteered for (he qualified for the event) back to where I went to college.

Congratulations sir/ma’am!

This is a great way to get some additional money as well as remain close to the game. I have given thought to becoming a volunteer assistant/assistant when I move to Illinois for work.

who is going to run our black light tennis, Caleb? How are you guys handling the stringing? I was never a fan of the LCU model. They were headed in the right direction when they had you doing it, but once the players took over it was too inconsistent. I had several sending their racquets with Braden to string at my place. Hope everything is going well for you up in Nebraska.

I'll drive back just for you Herb!
As far as I am aware I think either me, the head coach, or a student stringer.
I wont be in Nebraska until the 28th but I'm excited to get up there.

it's ok you can tell us. 55,000? we're all friends here. I make about that someyears.
Is your other profile bobleenov1963? LOL. He's a state employee, you can probably find that on the state.gov website on your own. Discussing folks income is commonly considered a private matter regardless of them working in the public or private sector.

Congrats @tennisfan17 ! I played at ESU in the same conference as Kearny St., back in the stone age of course.

What is the big deal about sharing salary? My employer, a non profit, posts everyone salary on the company internal website. It posts all senior leadership people salaries on the company annual report, as it should. Completely transparent.

It’s a generally considered a rude question to ask someone you don’t know their salary. That and people like you scoff at how much certain professions make (again rude) and judge others on material things. I’d also recommend against giving personal financial information on the internet for security reasons when it’s completely unnecessary.

That might be true for previous generations but the current generation doesn’t have any issues with sharing salary, based on what I’ve been observing with current generation Z at my work place from the company internal message board.

If you’re a state employee, the salary is posted somewhere on the state website.

Go back and read the thread, he already politely (unlike you) declined to disclose it. Pretty sure he’s young and part of the generation you are generalizing about. Just stop ruining this thread that started as a celebration of him getting a coaching job, not a discussion about his pay.

Good luck and enjoy your time coaching. I was lucky enough to be an Asst Coach for 3 yrs while in college still and enjoyed the time, sometime wish I would have stayed in the profession but life and family pulled me in a different direction.

Update! (I'm sorry I know this isn't D1 and won't likely generate a ton of interest but I'm happy) We got all our new players in and are set to start our first practice this upcoming week. First competition is in September at an invitational and I'm super pumped to see how our team does. I'll post updates as I can.

Had our first event against SBU, Northwest Missouri, and Drury!

Women's team is in great form. Ended up winning the A draw, B draw and Doubles event for the women! Excellent fight from them and our number 2 girl, even scored a win over a 9 UTR player so I feel great about the form we are entering the year in!

The men's team was a little less successful in terms of results. We won the B draw for men, but in A singles and A/B Doubles we had some tough loses to very good players. In the grand scheme of things though, they competed really well against some experienced opponents and teams so that bodes well for improvement down the line. Looking forward to next week! I will be traveling to Colorado with our women's team and while our head coach travels to Topeka with the men for their ITA regional

That's a highly competitive start to the fall! Not sure about the women's teams listed, but the men from each of those schools are traditionally high level and post-season DII team qualifiers.

The Northwest and Drury both had some success post season last year with Drury making the final site in Orlando before going out to Nova Southeastern. Feels like a great start.

SBU got a D1 transfer from Jacksonville State and the depth is solid. Drury and Northwest also just so so good.

SBU men's tennis trivia. Pro tennis coach Sven Groeneveld played his first two years there before transferring to University of Kansas back in the mid-80's.

Won our first dual match of the season with the Women's team! (Men are at Regionals with our head coach)

Beat CSU-Pueblo 6-1. Other than some freshman jitters and some chippiness, overall happy with the match. Sadly we are on a bad rain delay and I'm unsure if we will be able to finish our duals this weekend.

Sadly my time in Colorado was rained out. However in Topeka, our men's team had a great run! Number 1 player made the semis, beating a few seeded players in route. solid wins in doubles (a win over the 5 seed and a tight match against the 1 seeds). A draw cons "winner" (finals wasn't played). Great results overall for the team. I'll be taking them this weekend to Omaha for hidden duals.

Only sad part of the weekend is despite a great run by our number 1 player, due to the way the ITA handles at large bids for the ITA cup he can't even be considered for a bid even though he beat a few nationally ranked players to make the semis. Since one of the guys who was 17 in the last rankings made the quarters, he's technically eligible to go to nationals over our player.

seeing the results, Washburn appears to have reloaded on their Men's side. Good luck the rest of the season and hope your enjoying the new position

Washburn is cracked this year. Kirby is doing a fantastic job with the program. Conference contender and Orlando qualifier contender for sure. If They stay healthy, top 10 is doable

Just out of curiousity, do you have time limit on your daily sessions? I was told colleges' coaches have been asked to train for the most 5 hours per day.
mmmm yes and no. It kinda depends on what exactly is being done. We have limits on what can be done as a team, but there is more room for one on one or small group sessions with players. We are under NCAA guidelines for that

Lost 3-4. Excellent fight and heart from our men’s team against an experienced and well coached MSU Denver team. Really happy with the fight our players had!

Biggest thing was nerves and unfamiliarity with playing against loud, very vocal teams.

Late update from the weekend we had!

Only our men played and they went 1-2. Tough matches against a talented JUCO and another D2 team. Our last match was tough, and I think a real eye opener for them. Won doubles and four first sets and dropped the match.

As disappointed with the loss as the head coach and I were, it was valuable learning experience for them. Excited to keep growing :)
