Grade 3 Groin tear

Hi I wrote in February after I suffered a groin injury at tennis. I was told to expect time to recover. Well that is exactly right. After about 6 weeks I went back to have some hits and despite my groin feeling perfectly Ok wit normal activities including gym and long distance walking, it was still not right with tennis. I was really surprised it was still quite painful with very typical sudden movements associated with tennis. Somewhat perturbed I then went to see a sport's physician and he ordered an MRI. This in fact showed virtually a complete avulsion of the adductus longus tendon from the pubic bone, in other words a grade 3 tear. The physician advised strongly against any surgical procedures but rather more intensive physiotherapy with a someone specializing in groin issues. Has anyone out there had a grade 3 groin tear? My reading says 3-4 months to recover which would fit with what I am going through but of course I am apprehensive about long term prospects so I would like to hear from anyone that may have experienced a similar injury.

How old are you and how exactly did you injure your groin?

I am 60 years old. The injury occurred on Feb 9 when I was running to a very short ball which was hit into a strong wind and on a dead grass court. The ball bounced even lower than I expected and I had to make an extra lunge to make it and then the groin tore. The MRI suggested degenerative changes in the adductor longus on both sides. The sports physician said I tore an already degenerative muscle.

I had a friend in HS who got good at the splits, and he said he did it because he suffered a groin pull and the coaches told him to do that I believe. I started working straddle splits before getting back on the court, and my adductors have become much thicker from them. Might be something to that. A muscle that is bigger and more flexible should be more injury resistant.
