This stat is actually making me think about the single worst loss at a major for each of these guys. The loss that was most shocking given the stature of each player in the match. I'll put down a nomination for each:
  • Fed: Stakhovsky, Wim '13, 2nd R. - This match was kind of indicative of Fed's subpar play that season due to chronic injury (and he was almost 32), but it still stings. I'll put another match with less of an asterisk: Tsonga, Wim '11, QF - Didnt see that coming. And Fed was up, 2 sets - zilch.
  • Djok: Kohlschreiber, RG '09, 3rd R.
  • Nadal: Darcis, Wim '13, 1st R. - Straights.
  • Sampras: Yzaga, USO '94, 4th R. - Who?

Check out the Yzaga-Sampras head to head sometime. It's also interesting to note that more than half of their career matches were at the US Open.

On another note, Yzaga's career match record at the US Open was 20-11.

Does that mean Djokovic is the GOAT?

No it means that his average game is better than everyone else's average game. He is the most consistent

He's also the youngest, so he hasn't gone through his decline period where his win ratios get diluted a bit. But he wants to achieve as much as possible, so win percentage is irrelevant.

True but even early in his career nadal wasn't as consistent and Sampras never was. Even when he was 3 for that eternity he would rarely get beaten by guys below. I think for this reason Murray's standing in the game will be undervalued. Not many guys with many more slams were as consistent and played at such a high level. Also these four guys are pretty mentally tough to keep coming back from setbacks and disappointments. Most of to 70s and 80s legends disappeared once headed by a rival. Rafa took down Roger then Novak got them both then Rafa came back Murray emerged Novak came back and some of the tennis Fed has been playing has been vintage (although not against Novak the last couple )

Federer - 2004 Wimbledon to 2010 Australian - a streak of 23 Slam tournaments where he either won (14 out of 23) or lost to the eventual champion.

This is a pretty amazing statistics.

And now let's wait for the 'weak era' experts to chime in
