Grass is a disaster....it's 2021....Change the surface to hard, and relocate Wimbledon while you're at it

Lol it really would and the publicity would be huge. People would be actually interested in tennis! And the blue Clay! They should have kept that going.

At least in 2013 or 2014 they should have considered the change, it was a big mistake to keep things same. every 8-10 years there should be major changes in Tennis to keep things interesting.

I agree. They are just rinsing and repeating and it’s going nowhere.

Someone like Nadal developed so much comfort on clay that he won it 13 times, jeez....

Even Federer never had the luxury of playing on the same grass that he grew up with, a bit faster grass and he too could have got 11-12 slams easily here.

Slow conditions have really played into the hands of the baseliners.

In my opinion Nick needs to win, I dont think Humbert can trouble Novak or anyone beyond the QFs.
Even Nick isn't going that far but if he could then we are in for fun.

Except Roddick never posted results on the grass that legends before him like Pete, Edberg, etc. did. He excelled on the grinder's green

Roddick poor guy modelled his whole game on Sampras.
The grass got changed, grinder's green did not benefit Roddick, he would have loved the 90s courts.

As far as I'm concerned, we need more grass.
They put different grass or let it grow longer or added something on it (?) to slow it down, trying to engineer a result, but didn't factor in the rain making it into an ice skating rink.

It's the humid weather and the nature of the surface that make people fall and slip. Remember 2014? Djokovic, who is one of the greatest movers on the surface, was slipping and falling left and right that year, Federer also fell several times (something that almost never happens to him), not to mention other players.
It happened before, it will happen in the future.

It's important to separate the conditions from the surface.

Frankly, the AO should go back to grass, even though it won't.

Also, the grass should back to something closer to 90's composition of the grass. The tour could use an actual fast court tournament.

And the us open should go back to green clay

What a bunch of whinging.

Grass is a natural surface and the conditions vary.

You don't change direction on damp or sweaty grass with large lunging steps, you do it with small steps.

Injuries are unfortunately, but they are generally the result of poor footwork.

If you hate the grass they're using, you can exercise your right of not watching. The rest of us can just watch and enjoy, the fabulous grass and tennis!

I mean if I hate some music, I'd never listen to it, and endlessly complain that it sucks. If I hate a movie, I'd never sit hours through it, and then complain that it sucks so much.

Imagine watching this after RG and saying all surfaces play the same. I swear some people on here don’t watch anything and just come here to spout off nonsense.

I agree - the surfaces are still actually different, even if the difference - in some respects (speed, bounce) - has been lessened a bit. I still think the big thing with clay and grass is the movement aspect compared to hard courts. You can see it. One example -- backcourt grinders who have no problem with the speed and bounce of grass courts, but you can just tell they don't feel secure in their footing, or changing directions quickly - which makes a massive difference in how successful a player can be.

The funniest thing about people complaining on grass here is that 99% (maybe 100%!) of the people whinging about it have never played on grass, fast or otherwise...
I'd love to play on grass someday. I think there's a single grass court in Iowa, about 3 hours away. I think there's a few near St Louis, about 9 hours drive. Beyond that there are some on either coast.

More evidence of rampant geniuses on TTW where Roddick (#1 ranked player, won a slam) is a "mediocre" and "terrible" tennis player.

Yes, Roddick was terrible.

- Bombing serve and good forehand. That's about it.

Terrible backhand
Terrible movement
Terrible return
0 game intelligence, play like a headless chicken.
below average volleyer... for such a server

We could go on listing how bad he was..

Yes, Roddick suited very well on grass. Just like Karlovic (even him managed to get 10 titles or something like that)

Terrible as in what level NTRP? 4.0?

I kind of like slippery grass Bc it diminishes the advantage that super fast but unbalanced movers have and helps those who have great footwork even when they can’t move around the court that aggressively. Anyway, unless it keeps raining the courts usually dry out by the second week and a lot of the slippery grass will be worn away, so it will be back to being like a clay court soon.

I've just been flicking between the live streams on the BBC.
There's a mixed doubles match on Court 4 between Sharan/Sharan and Behar/Voskoboeva. I only clicked it as one of the Sharans is British and I've never seen her play.
A ball kid has just decked it on the grass, leg has gone right under them as they slide forward so extending the ankle right back and the match has completely stopped for paramedics to take over. Not sure if this will get any publicity but it looked super slippery at the back.

Interesting that the shameless malcontent Kyrgious is constantly complaining about slow grass and not about the slippery conditions.

Murray just fell for the second time in his current match. Early in the first set. Grass is dangerous.

As someone in another 'grass is horrible' thread suggested, today's players just need to learn to play on grass. But wait... Murray has already won this tourny twice - so he knows how to play on this surface. Yet he is still falling... So is the problem Murray's lack of skill on grass, or the surface itself that's the danger?
