Result as expected, pointless move for putting Delpo in the doubles.

It was either stupid or the Argentinians saw it as a tactic to (A) force GB to play Andy so tiring him out a bit more and give their 2nd player an outside chance to win (B) give them an outside chance of winning it on the Saturday and still having another more realistic chance to win on Sunday with Del Po vs Edmund.

Leon Smith has Dan Evans to call on for reverse singles, or Kyle Edmund. I expect he will play Evans and hope Delpo runs out of gas.

Dan Evans can definitely beat an exhausted del Potro tomorrow.

Pure and utter madness delpo played the doubles today. Even the possible tactical motivations, it still did not make logical sense.

Didn't they win once when David Nalbandian and JMDP were both on the team?
Argentina never won a DC title. They have the most runner ups for a non winner.

I think Delpo and Nalabandian got to 2009 and 2011 final...both lost to Spain. Remember the Clay match against Nadal...delpo Breadsticks him...and Nadal then just demolishes him.

They have other finals too....one when Vilas when playing.

Dan the man waiting quietly on the sidelines to lead Team GB to its greatest victory since the last one

Evans, that had MP at USO vs Wawrinka, can beat a tired Delpo.
He'll crack under the pressure.
Evans played like fire against Wawrinka because, like so many other lesser pro players, he thrives when he has nothing to lose. The huge shots come off when you're relaxed.
Here, he'll have everything to lose: a deciding-match Davis Cup rubber, his hard-earned reputation since USO, and his odds of ever being picked against for Davis team.

He'll be crushed by Delpo. 6-4 6-2 6-1.

Why or WHy did Delpo play the doubles ?? surely they didn't think they could beat the Murrays ????????? now he will be dead tired..

I think the Argentinians were hedging their bets and trying to give themselves 2 chances to seal the tie 1) Del Potro had an outsiders chance to win the doubles, highly unlikely as the Murrays are both high quality doubles players 2) Del Po should win a likely deciding 5th rubber but trying their luck in the doubles and failing now puts Del Po in a worse position.

I'm sorry in my delayed response to your post...TTW's server is slower than the Poobartoli serve in the immortal Sewretch gif!

Smith is not giving us the chance to see if Delpo can be de-Evoed, opting for Edmund instead.
Correction...LiveScores pulled the listing and it's Mayer vs Evo!

Argentina will be Devo-ed! They are not men!

Delpo just cost his country this DC tie! What was he thinking? Why did he play doubles? Hubris! Nothing but hubris!

No Delbonis! Mayer is outside top 100! Why is he playing such a crucial match against an opponent who has just come off the back of a good run at the US Open? Jesus! Who is making these decisions!

Huge f**k up apparently. But in the end, it worked out well for them. Massive win by Mayer today. Tremendous tennis from him in the last 3 sets.
Well done.

So who is at home in the final? If Argentina are home, they should probably play the tie on clay. Croatia basically have four singles players: Cilic, Karlovic, Coric, and Dodig. Both Cilic and Karlovic, their two most dangerous players, are weakest on clay. Even though Del Potro may not love clay, he's decent on it. Coric likes clay, too, but isn't as dangerous as Cilic or Karlovic. And all Argentina's other players love clay. They also have far more strength in depth than Croatia: the #10 ranked Argentinean, Renzo Olivo, is about 50 spots higher than the #5 ranked Croatian.

It was stupid to risk Del Potro in the doubles. But as for the Delbonis/Mayer comparison, I think Mayer might well be better than him on indoor hard courts. Delbonis is pretty much a clay-court specialist. Also, while Mayer has had a very poor year, remember that he finished 2015 ranked #35. He's not a bad player and he has more big-match experience than either Delbonis or Evans. That experience evidently helped out today.

Welp, Argentina still did it!

I'm actually pleased for a couple of reasons: firstly that Argentina are in with a chance of winning DC for first time, and also that with DC out of the way for Andy he can actually concentrate properly on the remainder of the season and the WTF.

Croatia has the choice of surface. So, they will no doubt play it on a pretty fast indoor hard court that will suit Cilic and Karlovic. Coric can get the experience of sitting on the bench.

It will be tough for Argentina. Del Potro will likely need to win both singles ties, as it's hard to imagine any of their other players picking up a win against Cilic or Karlovic. Perhaps Mayer would have an outside shot.

Get Real..... Delpo was injured, his wrist is not healthy............... now his left hand finally fell off and he couldn't play the 5th rubber,,,,,it is all captain's fault.

No way did the captain ask for Delpo to play doubles.
As Rusedski stated on the Beeb, "I guarantee you that kind of call came from Del Potro himself, a captain would never risk this situation"

@Gizo
Can you recall some other ties where 3 different players won singles matches like Argentina did this weekend?
Canada just did it with Shapovalov winning a dead rubber after Pospisil and Dancevic won the first two rubbers on Friday and dubs was the clinching point.
i suppose moose was talking about "live rubbers"... ;)
i've got other examples:
RUS d. FRA (2006 QF) with safin, davydenko and tursunov winning single matches
RUS d. USA (2006 SF) with safin, youzhny and tursunov winning single matches
(2 straight rounds !)

Wow! What an exciting tie that ended up being! I thought that ARG had it in the bag after the first 2 singles rubbers. And then the weird choice to have Delpo play doubles. I wonder if Delpo had already determined that he couldn't handle another tough singles match and instead thought he could help out in doubles.

In any case, congrats to Mayer! Well played, with so much pressure at stake.

(Missed chatting with all of my fellow TTW's today as this played out. Glad things seem back in play, so to speak.)

Hadn't thought of that. Possible, but after 4 consecutive matches in Flushing it would be surprising that he couldn't handle an easy singles after a day's rest.
More likely he felt on a roll, and thought he could put the nail in the coffin, without realising how hard doubles would be on his backhand (even though he'd played 68 doubles in his career before this one, winning 33).

I hope it teaches him a lesson in the drawbacks of overeagerness, at least.

Delighted for Mayer being the hero of the day, too. Can't forget that look on his face after missing his 4 match point against Federer in Shanghai 2014...
