Delpo, you're truly amazing. I pray he remains healthy. The way he can win against the top guys without a strong topspin backhand is phenomenal. You can't really break that side down unless you're a power hitting like Wawa, who started doing so in the final 2 sets of their USO encounter. His slice has become world class. Wins over Wawrinka, Murray, Nadal and Djokovic this year. Amazing.

Well played Leonardo!

Welp, Argentina still did it!

I'm actually pleased for a couple of reasons: firstly that Argentina are in with a chance of winning DC for first time, and also that with DC out of the way for Andy he can actually concentrate properly on the remainder of the season and the WTF.

This.

Argentina get another chance to capture that elusive Trophy and Andy is finally freed from the tyranny of DC commitments to focus his remaining energies on other important end of season events chiefly the WTF, something he hasn't been able to do in a long while for various reasons.

Mainad your scheming and cunning is so clear its pathetic and miserable
Ass for the DC tyranny???? it is London created, based & scouts its players
so you can have some pride in the false propaganda.
Part of the GB effort to homogenise Scotland and Wales and stage
it in Glasgow for GB Queenie brownie points in Scotland and failed
as the only native born Pommieman Evans crushed by a weakling Leo
LMAO
Muzzler needs Noles level to go south, knocked out early or too tired
in more than a few finals to get higher in the geriatric era of tennis

Don't be silly. Now put your laptop away and go to bed before mummy finds out you've been visiting adult websites again and confiscates it. Chop chop.

@Gizo
Can you recall some other ties where 3 different players won singles matches like Argentina did this weekend?

Hi Moose. Sorry, I wasn't able to access this website for most of yesterday for some reason, so I only just saw this now.

In addition to the examples provided vive le beau jeu, other times that this happened:

- USA in their 1995 SF against Sweden; Sampras, Agassi and Martin
- Spain in their 2000 QF against Russia; Corretja, Ferrero and Costa
- Spain in their 2004 R1 against Czech Republic; Robredo, Lopez and Nadal

There are probably numerous other examples of this, although none spring to the mind at the moment !

Well done to Argentina. Del Potro, Pella and Mayer really stepped up to the plate this weekend. You can tell how much this competition means to them.

I'm not that disappointed that GB lost, it's been a good run in the World Group over the past 3 years, quarter-finalists, champions and semi-finalists, coming so soon after that bleak moment in Lithuania in 2010. It's been so much better than any of us British tennis fans could possibly have imagined.

I really want Argentina to finally win this competition after all their near misses, and if they do it would be just the 3rd time in the 21st century that the competition has been won by a non-European nation. However it will be tough for them away to Croatia in the final on a fast surface.

Not to mention that "Team GB & Northern Ireland" is a one-man team on the top stage.
Murray takes it so seriously these years he almost never loses, but there's little depth. Argentina tennis is much more deserving : for two-thirds of the UK population, they've fostered one mega-star and four or five good talents.

Argentine captain, about Del Potro playing the doubles:

Orsanic said, “Originally we thought that he would play the fifth rubber if possible but, after Friday’s match, we couldn’t think of that. That’s why we made him play the doubles to see if his quality could help Argentina to close the tie. But that was something we couldn’t say to the press. So there were a few cards that we had to keep for ourselves just to keep Great Britain thinking of what we would do.”

Right old chap must let the illusions of Grandeur carry on
That poor Evans chap what a sad sight for the Queens rule

Well, that's about what Argentina currently has too. However they have historically fielded one of the best teams in Davis Cup but never managed to win it. I'd like to see them bring it home this time especially for Del Potro's sake.

Well turns out Argentina got away with it, Mayer was either in choke mode or zone mode, thankfully for the away team by set 2 he was in the latter category.

Croatia has got it in the bag, Delpo is like Murray the lone weapon as
Cilic, Coric, Dodig are a formidable team and even lubjicic and Ancic could
come out of retirement and beat Monaco, Mayer, Pella and Delbo atm.

IMO they got lucky. Wasting Del Potro by playing him in the doubles was a serious gamble that didn't pay off. He should always have been kept in reserve for the reverse singles. Fortunately for them neither Edmund nor Evans were on sufficient form to punish them for it. They got away with it!

Are you serious? No one other than Murray has won a main tour title. Only Aljaž Bedene, an imported recruit, has ever reached an ATP final.
Outside Delpo, the Argentinian team fields 5 players who've won a title (Monaco, Delbonis, Berlocq, Mayer, Zeballos) plus Guido Pella who's reached a maiden ATP final this year, taking out Thiem in SF.

How you can possibly propound that both teams are even remotely similar befuddles me.

According to Orsanic, it seems like after Friday they decided (or Delpo told them) that he wasn't going to last another complete singles match, so they decide to put him on a less physically grueling doubles just to see if it will work out.

Really? A 5-setter doubles against the Murrays easier than a 3-setter against lightweight Dan Evans?
That injury really changes everything. He can no longer plan anything like the other players.

Irrespective of the current rankings of Evans and Mayer, Evans was outclassed and outgunned. Mayer served bombs on a court that isn't said to be fast. After the 1st set he was better in every way I can remember.

It looks like it, the South Americans take heckling to a whole new level so Argentina really needed home turf advantage.

I meant that the teams that they are currently playing with are not too far apart. Edmund and Evans are both ranked in the mid 50s not too far behind Delbonis and Pella, both in the 40s, while Mayer is currently ranked 128. It was not beyond the bounds of possibility that Edmund and Evans could have won their respective rubbers. Argentina of course has a much larger field of good players to draw upon. That is undeniable.

So happy to see my country in the Davis Cup final once again. In november we'll have a decent chance of winning this thing for the first time.. Hopefully Cilic will play a lot of tennis in October and November :D

Gracias por tanto Yacaré.

I rated Edmund and Evans highly for atm they have more ability & ceilings than their recent conquerors
but like selfies Kyrgios and Kokkinakis when put under DC pressure on home turf they turn to mush.
Its todays youth they are like roller coasters when it comes to focus and confidence
Mayer is like watching a sloth swing a racquet and apart from Pella who is well matched to Evans
the rest of the Argas are long past their prime, the croats have got it in the bag

Sosa09 - You will need lots of good luck and I hope the best for La Albiceleste but the team
was much stronger and had better chances when Nalbandian and Monaco were in peak form.
If they can get a strong doubles pairing to defeat Dodig and Cilic it would be great but Coric is
also a tough ask in singles for the 2nd rubber and decider. Coric will rise I feel in the final.

I read an interview with Delpo a couple of weeks ago and the interviewer asked if he had any more nicknames other than Delpo/Tower of Tandil, and he said something like 'Yes, but I can't repeat them to you, only my friends know' and laughed. So I'm intrigued LOL

I'm still not quite understanding why they wouldn't save him for the 5th rubber because of Friday's match.
Was it just a concern of him having two long matches ...?

Who knows if a súper Juan Monaco arises for the motivation to try to be included in the team too!

And also David Nalbandian, who was talented enough to give both Roger and Rafa fits and according to a friend who's a fan was heart & soul of the Argentina Copa Davis team when he was active.

Doubles is way underrated and Dodig is hard to beat in doubles while still a strong singles player on hard courts. The white and blue will need to work in this area its been the weakness.
Monaco would have to be mentally ready but his beauties rank higher than others and his game

Juan was called Palito as he was a little skinny kid smaller than many then became the tower of tandil
