Iga Swiatek b Simona Halep 6-1 6-2

In short, what sadly happened today was IMO the result of professional negligence on Cahill's and Simona Halep's part to do the required due diligence on a day when the opponent played inspired tennis, fuelled by the thirst for revenge:

- a failure to properly scout the opponent, who displayed exactly the arsenal in the previous match, with Bouchard
- a failure to evaluate the coming encounter, to prepare a plan B, and to execute it
- a failure to see that continuing to feed Swiatek high topspin balls serves her preference of attacking such balls or dropshot her; Halep did not execute perhaps even a slice, meant to lower the trajectory of the balls, to take Swiatek off her routine
- a failure to be prepped to execute aggressive returns
- a failure to improve Halep's 2nd serve, which becomes critical against power players
- a failure to be pumped up: Simona seemed quite indifferent to the developments on the court

Instead, what seemed to have been present was an overall dismissal of the opponent before the match, caused by the results of the previous encounters.

I agree but what’s Plan B? She’s not comfortable @ net. Her serve isn’t big enough to S&V. She doesn’t have a great slice.... apart from playing more aggressive, what’s a viable alternative strategy?

Did you guys watch?
Painful, movement wise first of all, imho, at the beginning, but better after the on court treatment + Garcia's meltdown...

Five years later, Simona finally adopted some of the serving changes I recommended then in:

Not that I assume my post was the deciding influence, but who knows?

2021 IW features this mouthwatering 3rd R derby
Halep - Raducanu
which will be tough.

A propos of Raducanu and Halep exchanging many (justified and no doubt sincere) pleasantries:

"A (half) brother (sister) is a (half) brother (sister), but the cheese must be paid for ..." (a Romanian proverb, i.e., nothing is for free, even between brothers).

Coach Dobre finally mentions doing changes I recommended more than 5 years ago (serve, return, more attacks at net - see uptread), because "the new generations are forcing the issue," he says. To which I say waiting this much (both Simona and Cahill culprits) is generally a recipe for very unpleasant turns of events.

Simona could have been a 5-7 Slam winner ...

"Don't give the Romanian his/her last mind" (another Romanian proverb i.e. let's hope she won't have to regret the errors of her former ways).

Halep was broken in doubles today.
Great volleys  , but serve not up to par.
This may spell trouble ... even with Kostyuk, not to speak of Raducanu.

Halep today:
"Putem spune că ne gândim să ne întoarcem la jocul din 2013, jucam mai agresiv atunci. "
"We can say we think about returning to the game [I had] in 2013. I was playing more aggressively then."
I've been saying all the time that.

One step away from playing Raducanu in Romania, in the SFs of the 250 Transylvania Open.

Halep should win 2-3 more slams before she retires. She is too good for just two total.

But if she doesn’t, then she can still feel good about her career.
