    4th R 2015 AO

    Halep breaks Wickmeier
    2-1 Halep serving
    3-1 ace Halep
4-1 Halep kills for now Wickmeier in movement and DTL

buy Wickmeier breaks back with good returning
    4-2 Halep, W serving

    4-3 Halep, Wickmeier is back
no slice no drops from Halep, too uniform

    5-3 Halep serves well
    5-4 Wickmeier holds well

5-4 Halep serving for set, let's see if she does it
    amazing DTL Halep 15-0
    2 aces in game

6-3 Halep, well fought set on both sides

    Wickmayer holds well for
    0-1 Halep

1-1 on serve, both play well now
amazing length from Halep to break again in the 3rd game of the set

    but Wickmayer breaks back
    2-2

Halep breaks again with great defense
    3-2 Halep
amazing DTL FH Halep and serving to break again
    4-2 Halep

amazing DTL BH this time Halep, a la Djokovic breaks again

    5-2 serving for match

    6-3 6-2 Halep
    great match for both
beats a very tough opponent (was 0-3 against her, but ages ago) to tie her best performance at AO

Great movement, great ball cupping/holding and contact. She plays like Agassi right now, and I'd prefer more like Henin: more slices, net, drops, lobs.

    Clearly, better serving this year.

    Mentally and athletically, very strong.

Not enough variety though. Will need that for #1 and to stay there.

Any particular reason you only update on one post? And it's Wickmayer.

I'd go the other way around simply because Yanina is older. Little longer & leaner too, but I see your point.

Halep is a machine. I see her dominating the women's game for the next 10 years. She just mows through people like they're not even there.

Do you think she can take out sharapova or Genie? I hope so. I am not sure who she matches up against better.

With her present serving, yes, she can take out Sharapova, but she needs her DTLs at a very high level, because her slice is not there to bother Shara.

Let her take care of Makarova first.

Bouchard will probably take out Sharapova. This is Halep's tourney to lose imo. I can't see anyone beating her.

    2015 AO QF Halep Makarova

3-1 Makarova, slow start by Halep, Halep broken twice (2 DFs in one game)
    initially a bit off
3-2 Makarova, finally Halep holds, serving better
seems to get back the feel of the ball

Both hitting the ball quite hard, Makarova being leftie

Even if brought to deuce, Makarova takes the game for
    4-2 Makarova

    Halep serving well, takes it
Makarova has lots of power, and plays very well when running sideways
Halep needs to play her down the center
4-3 Makarova, Halep advantage, cannot break

    5-3 Makarova

Makarova returns very well, creates trouble
Makarova had BP, Halep saves for

    5-4 Makarova

Until now, Makarova has had the upper hand in many exchanges

6-4 Makarova takes 1st set, deservedly; has kept Halep on her heels with very good leftie serving, and great long angled shots.

She certainly could beat Halep, if Halep doesn't step up (who made many errors at the beginning, giving M confidence)

I don't see variety (slice, dropshots) from Halep, just baseline. No progress in this respect since last year.

On errors by Halep, Makarova breaks from start in 2nd
The Makarova returning and net play clearly benefits from her doubles

    1-0 Makarova
    2-0 Makarova serving well
Makarova both attacks and defends well
3-0 Makarova, this is over, I'm afraid. Halep has been tensed from the beginning, and the long ball of Halep forced her to errors

    M is 2 breaks up

5-0 Makarova breaks Halep for the 3rd times
she has killed Halep in the 2nd set, really

    6-4 6-0 Makarova

Halep still can't beat the power players.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
No plan B, no slice, no drop shots, no net, no variety.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What was the off season all about, the new coaching?

It's all a failure for now. The only new good thing to see this season was better serving, but not today.

Perhaps Halep should get a point from Makarova and start playing doubles for variety.

Congrats to Makarova though - she executed magnificently.

    Halep post-match:

    Video:
    http://www.ausopen.com/en_AU/video/index.html

    Q. Probably not your best today. Did it feel bad before the match?

SIMONA HALEP: I practiced very well in the morning, but maybe I was a little bit too stressed before I started the match. Wasn't my good day. I had a bad day. But she played well and everything was in for her. So she deserves this winning. I'm really sad a little bit now that I could not play my tennis, my game, but that's tennis and I have to look forward to the next tournament.

    Q. Do you think you put pressure on yourself being the favorite in this match?

SIMONA HALEP: Not really pressure. I cannot say pressure. Just I was a little bit stressed. I don't know why. I had experience from last year to play quarterfinals, so it doesn't mean that I felt pressure. Just I didn't feel the game, the ball. Was a very bad day for me.

    Q. Where did you feel the match was getting away from you?

SIMONA HALEP: I felt in beginning of match my game is not going well, so I just try to change something in my game, but didn't work very well. In important moments she play really well. She had very lucky balls on the lines. Mine were out. So, yeah, wasn't too good. But still I am happy with my performance this tournament.

    Q. When was the last time you felt like that or had a match like that?

SIMONA HALEP: I don't really know now when I had. But sometimes is happening to feel that you are not in a good mood to play, you know, you don't feel your game very well. But it's normal, I think. Many matches, sometimes it's normal to feel like this.

    Q. Cool weather didn't have any part to play?

SIMONA HALEP: Was colder today. Was different. But for her was the same thing.

    Q. Do you feel stress before the match or does it hit you when you get out there?

SIMONA HALEP: Like I said, in the practicing I hit well. But, yeah, when I started to play, I just felt a little bit my body, it's stressed, my mind maybe. Yeah, I felt only during the match. Not before or yesterday, but just today.

    Q. Do you have strategies to cope with that?

SIMONA HALEP: Yeah, like I said, I have experience. I had experience to play quarterfinals in Grand Slams. But sometimes you cannot manage the situation. I tried. I did everything I could this match. But, you know, just mentally because during the points maybe I didn't fight very well today. I just lost my concentrate to win the points, to win the match. So I didn't believe any more in second set, and that's maybe why I lost 6-0.

    Q. It wasn't a great match for you. But what is Makarova doing well in her game?

SIMONA HALEP: I was expecting she will hit more stronger, but she didn't. She played very soft tennis today. She opened very well the angles. So was a different game. She played well. She served very well. Her lefty slice is not easy to give the ball back.

    Q. You came in here as the No. 3 seed. How do your expectations for yourself change this year with how good last year was? You said you're satisfied with quarterfinals. Does that change at all compared to last year when you weren't top 10?

SIMONA HALEP: Last year was a big result for me here. Now I cannot say it's very big, but is enough for me. I started very well this year. I won one title, and now I did here a few good matches. I have confidence this year will be better than last year. I just try to improve more in my game, in my mind as well. I think I'm on the right way to go in the top higher. But, you know, it's tough. Every match is difficult at this level. Everyone wants to beat me because I am in the top. I know this thing from the past. I had the same mentality. I still want just to play with pleasure and just relaxed on court because I don't want to feel pressure. I don't have to be very stressed on court because it's tennis, every match is different, every day is different. We have to keep going, keep working, to see how good we can be.

    Q. How much of this tournament have you watched on TV?

SIMONA HALEP: I didn't watch, because my matches, just what I have to do.

    Q. The Williams sisters are both into the quarterfinals. Did you watch them when you were little on television?

SIMONA HALEP: Yeah, sure. When I was younger, yeah, I watched a lot. They were like models for me. They are fighting a lot. They are still in at 30, 34 years old. So it's amazing. It's impressive. They are great champions. Yeah, in my opinion, I still have to learn from them.

    Q. What is your schedule from here?

SIMONA HALEP: Fed Cup in Romania.

    Q. After that?

SIMONA HALEP: Dubai and we will see next. But Dubai will be the first.

Muguruza b Halep at home in Romania, in Fedcup.

    Muguruza played very well, but:
Halep is poorly coached again. I don't see any progress in her game since middle of last year, no plan B. She was killed by Muguruza's returns and net play and her own poor serving at the beginning of the first set.

Let's see if Bouchard and Halep will both play, and where exactly it will be organized.

    You mean Romanian community?

Pretty significant, but it depends where. Today there are over 12 mil. people of Romanian descent outside the country.

Halep declares she might play for only 5 more years.

    Wants to have three children.

Hogstedt seems to be out. For now, it seems Bouchard has made a better coaching move, in the end.

    The 2015 Dubai draw:

    http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/posting/2015/718/MDS.pdf

    Withdrawn:
    Serena is ill.
Bouchard is reported to have a hand/arm injury, or whatever.

Sharapova is not around. She prepares to play in Acapulco, where the sweets are playing too. Sugarpova going after the sugar? Guess so.

This is a draw made to measure for Halep or Kvitova, but can they take it? Huge payout.

Halep needs to beat Makarova in the QF, and Kvitova needs to take out Venus, in the SFs. Not gimmes.

    Simona Halep - Daniela Hantuchova
    6-2 6-0
    easy enough
but Halep was feeling her left rib

Tomorrow Pironkova for Halep, then the tough series: Makarova, Wozniacki, Kvitova, who are all still there.

Great performance by Halep to win 2015 Dubai under intense pressure. No new elements though, but close to her previous best.

    Needs more for the GSs.

    -----------
Halep: I Hope To Play Indian Wells 100%

And just how soon will the World No.3 be back in action on the match court? "Normally it's like 10 days to recover, and then I will be okay to play," she said. "I hope to play Indian Wells 100%."

Looking even more into the future, Halep was asked by the press in Doha about her goals for 2015, and whether reaching World No.1 was on her radar. It turns out it kind of is, but kind of isn't.

"Of course it's one of my dreams, but I'm more focused on winning a Grand Slam and winning many titles," the Romanian said. "And if Serena is still playing, I think it's tough to become No.1.

"If I play well, if I'm healthy, and if I win titles, yes, I can be very close to No.1. But I'm trying not to think about this too much because it gives me pressure, and I don't need pressure right now."

Halep is 100% recovered from the rib injury suffered in Dubai and ready to leave for IW.

    The path for Halep:

    Bye, Soler-Espinosa, Lepchenko, Muguruza/Pliskova, CSN/Radwanska, S. Williams, Sharapova/Azarenka

Well, let's see which of these get to meet her:)

You can edit the title, and take away the 2014 USO part if you wanted to.
