The draw is out in Stuttgart and Halep is (2):

    http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/posting/2015/1051/MDS.pdf

A tough match for her in 2nd R with Muguruza, who has beaten her twice lately with better tactics (coming to the net aggressively on short balls). Let's see if the new team Halep thinks better this year.

Sharapova, who declared herself sick for FedCup, is fine and dandy (1). The path isn't easy for her either: Kerber in 2nd R.

Serena and Genie Bouchard are the only top 10 to miss this indoor clay tourney.

Yep. This is a good thing indeed even it is only for practice purposes. She needs to add more variety to her game. However, Halep/Bencic down one set at the moment and 6-5 in the second.

I hope she plays Muguruza - it's tough and a big risk to be booted out from the tournament early, but nevertheless she needs every challenge she can get to really be ready to get to the top.

Update: Halep/Bencic lost the 1R doubles.

Ubha's prediction for Stuttgart is out and it's scary - Halep winner.

Yes, but at least extended that to 8-10 in the 3rd. Let's see the results in singles for each of them :)

Yes, the result is not a biggie; merely practice. The good thing is that she started to enter doubles as well - I guess someone in her entourage is giving good advice.

The other thing is for her to play (for good, not just to show up) Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome before RG. There is week between Rome and RG so she has time to rest even if she's going deep in all of them.

"Could", but it's a long week an you never know. A final Halep- Sharapova would be the best outcome of this tournament.

The biggest hurdle I see for Halep is Muguruza and of course Halep. I'm very curious to see in what kind of form she is in now, at the beginning of the clay season.

Muguruza is waiting for Halep: aggressive returns, coming to the net, good form today.
    Probably on Thur.

Same clay as in Bucharest, says Tiriac. And, I guess, in RG.

Streaming kind of snowed over today.

    @Marius

What do you think about Halep's chances against Muguruza this time around?

I saw a little bit from the match this morning and Muguruza seems to be in very good shape. Mind you Strycova was all over the place and quite nervous at least in the beginning of the second set.

No, it's tomorrow, in local prime time. I expect Sharapova one day later, in the same slot.

    http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/posting/2015/1051/OP.pdf

It's 50-50, if the 2015 clay-court Halep fires on all cylinders already. Lots at stake for Halep, not just the 2nd Porsche for the tournament. Muguruza is really playing for Sharapova tomorrow :)

It's 55-45 for Halep, if she brings new elements, along what I've suggested here and on private channels :) (not sure if anyone listens)

It's 55-45 for Muguruza, if Halep doesn't impose herself more than she did previously in this matchup.

Looking at the draw, I think this is the biggest hurdle for Halep in the way to the final.
I'm less concerned about her facing Radwanska, Errani, Lisicki, Wozniacki or Navarro.
Muguruza is the real test IMO and I too give her 50-50 chances.

Can't wait to see how she plays tomorrow.

    2015 2nd R Stuttgart
    Halep Muguruza
Anne Keothavong and Sam Smith Brit Commentators

Halep in that full pink, Muguruza in white, pink jacket

As in the latest encounters, Muguruza returns hard and breaks Halep
    who played relatively short

    1-0 Muguruza
2-0 Halep plays short, no DTLs yet

Finally 2 good serves from Halep, more rotation and leg action for length
    takes her 1st game

    2-1 Muguruza serving
3-1 after long drives by Muguruza

DF Halep 40-30, but takes it

3-2 Muguruza who's more in her element

Finally a good inside out drive by Halep for
    0-30

    4-2 Muguruza

    6-3 Muguruza first set
    ---

    Halep starts better and breaks:

    2-1 Halep, 40-15 serving

    3-1 Halep, too subdued still
4-1 Halep, Muguruza's balls start going out
    5-1 Halep, plays longer
6-1 Halep: if she plays aggressively, moving the ball, she should win

Virginia Ruzici is in the stands and so is the
physical trainer who was with the Romanian team here in Montreal, last week

Muguruza again aggressive, breaks Halep in the 3rd for
    1-0
2-1 Muguruza both are playing quite intense here

2-2 Halep breaks back, moving better
3-2 Halep on serve, after amazing CC FH

3-3 Muguruza, Halep has rushed her returning

6-3 Halep -- the one who was better focused at the end takes it.

    Again, not enough variety:

    - 1 slice approach
    - 1 dropshot
    but
    - 1 great lob

She needs more like this, and to step into the court, like Muguruza did.

But at least she's started to get back some of her clay movement, her baseline long shots, some aggressive serving and returning.

All in all - a great victory against a very tough opponent, and a good start to the clay season, in a very difficult situation where Halep had everything to lose, after not attending FedCup.

She's now at #2, at least for several days:

Watching on TennisTV.com - no issues with streaming.

Commentators mentioning Halep having a possible physical issue. I see her trying to massage her rib cage on the changeover… Worrisome.

That's not a surprise. Halep knew exactly what to expect. She needs to match Muguruza in intensity.

There is a capital IF in front of the sentence. But IF......

With every match I admire more and more her ability to come back from behind. This is something that one day will make the difference in a key match.... Even if she loses today.

I watched the match again from home, end-to-end. Halep still needs to do some fine tuning to her game. Too many easy (at least on TV) shots in the net or far out.

Overall, she held herself very well in front of a tough player and I'm glad she won. I really hope she can meet Sharapova.

On the other hand Muguruza should be well inside top 20 or even top 10. Much better player at the moment than anyone at the bottom half of the top 10 IMO.

Sharapova still has to face two decent opponents to get to the semis: Kerber and Makarova so she has her challenges. She's in action as we speak.

Now that the field had narrowed down a bit more, Halep needs to face Errani, Wozniacki/Navarro(?) to get to the final, which I think is doable for a healthy&focused Halep.

Not sure what's up with the rubbing of the left lower-back during the match with Muguruza yesterday. I hope nothing serious.

Amazing play from Kerber to take out Shara!

I'd've have preferred a Halep-Sharapova final, but ... Kerber really deserved this one. Amazing CC and DTL drives, dropshots ...

Halep is #2 in the world again:

    http://live-tennis.eu/wta-live-ranking

irrespective of her results in the rest of the tourney.

Crap. I was hopping for a Halep-Sharapova final. Now I have to wait for another day.

Halep should motivate herself to win this tournament.

    Halep-Errani

Halep plays behind Errani: that's what she should do with Sharapova and Serena too.
    No weapons from Errani.

    1-0 Halep
Errani serving, 0-30, Halep needs to crunch those returns, but not into the net, as she just did:-[ Good advance position on 2nd serve return. Halep breaks

    2-0 Halep serving
great DTL save by Errani for 0-30
poor serving by Halep in the middle of the receiving area,
plays short and not enough DTL
    Errani breaks back

    2-1 Halep, Errani serving
Halep good advanced returning stance even on 1st, 0-30
Halep breaks to love with a great CC BH: she should improve her FH to same level (a more relaxed swing)

Better serving Halep, going for the lines on 1st

3-2 Halep, Errani serving, 0-30 after a great DTL BH by Halep

    4-2 Halep serving
Errani breaks again comfortably: neither of them serves too well

    4-3 Halep, Errani serving
    Halep breaks, serves for set

    5-3 Halep
broken again, breaks back: you got it

6-4 Halep - she allowed to be broken too easily by relatively poor serving and not following at times at net

    ---
    2nd set

Halep broken again after 2 DTL FH in the net: those were big mistakes, no knee flexing, no top

    0-1 Halep, Errani serving
Halep breaks again after a great CC BH, then great DTL

Finally Halep serves well (down T, slice out), and holds

2-1 Halep, Errani holds! after getting very well to a drop shot

    2-2 Halep serving
Errani breaks, after a DTL BH where Halep didn't flex knees, not in position

3-2 Errani: Halep needs to be careful, too many errors

3-3 Halep has just broken back, of course
4-3 Halep holds after some deeper plays, Errani in the net with FH

5-3 Halep breaks with some great deep shots

After other breaks, Halep crunches a great CC inside out to put Errani aside.

    6-4 6-4 Halep.

Never in real danger, still too close for comfort. She stays for too long in exchanges with the baseline huggers. Hopefully she doesn't fancy herself in that stance. Woz, e.g., would love that.

Get some Henin variety in, Simona!

Surely great defending by Errani. She's an expert on this stuff, no doubt.

And the first set goes to Halep. Not an easy match though. She has troubles holding her serve although she's not serving too bad by her standards.

Very strange match so far. Halep started really well but was slowly drawn into Errani's web of spins. The Italian's been a break machine so far in this tournament. I don't quite understand why.

I think she got fed up with these breaks and she started to play and server more aggressive now (game 7).

    Finally a hold. She's 4-3 now.
