Great hope Halep - How far now?

How far will Simona Halep go at the 2014 USO?

Let see. Halep is confident now and she doesn't have that burden of #1 on her chest.

Funny to think that both she and Wozniacki finally got the Slam monkey off their backs this year and so finally quit the unfavoured club of Slamless WTA #1s (only Safina, Jankovic and Pliskova left in there now ).

Wonder if she or any of the women other than Mugu have gone to Rafa for advice over the years? Would make sense to pick the brains of the master of this surface.

Bravo Simona way to prepare (physically first of all and also mentally) for this match and also way to fight!

Good job!

Some Halep stats:

Halep follows in the footsteps of greats - the key stats
  • Halep is the fourth woman to win a Grand Slam after losing at least three previous finals - following Kim Clijsters, Chris Evert and Jana Novotna
  • She is the second Romanian woman to win a Grand Slam title, after Virginia Ruzici's victory at Roland Garros in 1978
  • Halep is the 27th different woman in the Open era to win the Roland Garros title
  • Only seven women have taken longer than Halep (33 attempts) to win their maiden Grand Slam title
  • Halep won the Roland Garros girls' singles in 2008 and is only the sixth player to do so, then win the women's title
  • Halep has 24 career wins and nine defeats at Roland Garros. Only Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova have a higher winning percentage.

I think Haelp might win both Wimbledon and US open this year
That’s hard to do for someone who just won her maiden slam. However, of all the ladies who won the first slam, she has the best chance. The USO is her next slam to win in my view, but who knows what she can do at Wimbledon.

BTW, in her way to the trophy, she beat three grand slam champions back-to-back-to- back (two of them reigning champions): Kerber, Muguruza and Stephens. Impressive stuff!

What she's been waiting for since she first started playing. Can she win as many French opens as Chris Evert did ? Simona is modern day Chris Evert, I believe.

Opponent injury and mental lapses aside, Halep is not that kind of player.

She did not win the RG because of opponents injury or mental lapses - mental strength is part of the opponent's arsenal just like it is for her and none was injured (maybe Petko).

It's very unlikely for her to win Wimbledon because the surface is not well suited for her game (although she had some success in the past at Wimbledon) and it's too close to the moment she won her first GS. Even so she says now she is anxious to start the grass season, it will take some time for this major milestone to sink in.

I think her next best chance to win another GS is USO (not necessarily this year) and maybe AO (although extreme heat does not favor her) . I highly doubt that she'll ever win Wimbledon though...

No, mostly because Halep is already turning 27 this year. Even to equal Evert she would have to win every single year until she is 32.
She doesn't have the game to be that dominant for many years to come IMO, especially with great young players such as Muguruza and Stephens around.

Nonetheless, I can see her win at least 2-3 more FOs, and she should be able to win the AO and USO as well.

I really like her, so I hop she can get to 6-8 majors or so.

Ha, ha... you are greedy. If she wins one USO and one AO it would be overachieving IMO. Let's stay real ... there are so many factors..... The key is to be capable to remain consistent and win more finals and follow up what seems to be her best season so far with 2 GS finals. I hope she does not end up like Kerber after her spike in 2016.

Other than Sharapova, I don't think there are any active players, not named Williams, that won more than 2 GS and they've been around for some time. Sure, few players are young and can certainly win more during their career but Halep is almost 27 now so she does not have enough time to win a lot more. 1-2 maybe, but not much more IMO. Could be none as well....

Halep welcomed home by 20,000+ people (according to Romanian media) who came to see her on the main stadium in Bucharest.

My guess is that she will have a meh Wimbledon (maybe even an early exit), but will have a shot at the USO.
Wimbledon no, but USO maybe. I've always thought USO is attainable for her...

Based on what? I can think of 1 or 2 reasons, but what is your reasoning?

Her best record is on clay = winning 3/4 of her clay matches. Her next best record is on grass = winning just over 68.4% of those matches. At AO and USO she has won 2/3 of her matches (just under 67%).

She has made it previously to the SF round at Wimbledon (QF or better, 3x). Last year she lost very early at AO and USO but reached the QF at Wimbledon. OTOH, she was runner up at the AO this year.

If we just look at her win % since 2014, it looks something like this:

. AO = 74% (14-5)
. RG = 85% (23-4)
. Wi = 76.5% (13-4)
. US = 73%. (11-4)

Not exact science, just gut feeling. I don't really belive in stats to predict outcome of a tennis match. Too many variables, mostly subjective, which get set in the day of the match and no one other than the player knows them.

Anyways, my guess re: bigger chance for USO than AO or Wimbledon is because it seems like for some reason she does better in the US/Canada stretch. I think one big factor is the climate and temp during the tournaments. She seems to do consistently well in Toronto/Montreal and Cincinnati. USO happens around the same time and also on the East coast.
I know she only went deep once at USO but there were other factors for that too. Also, for some reason the favorites seem to evaporate much faster at USO and strange things happened in the last couple of years (like Serena losing the chance of a truly unique career achievement when she only had to face non-threatening players).

As for AO, I never thought she would do well in extreme heat but this year was an eye opener. Something might have changed in her physical preparation. Her run at AO was unbelievable from the length of some matches, temp she played in, the intensity she played with. If she can repeat that, she might be onto something. If someone else other than Woz, which is about the other player with similar physical endurance, would've been on the other side of the net, probably Halep would've run her into the ground.

Wimbledon is whole different ball game. I know she had few decent runs there but at the end of the day grass is the turf of the power players. I would not completely rule it out as she might as well keep herself pumped up and focused and may pull a surprise but I would not count on it.

Out of Eastbourne.

French Open champion Simona Halep has pulled out of next week's Nature Valley International in Eastbourne, England, as she looks to regain full fitness ahead of Wimbledon.

World No. 1 Halep, 26, ended her long wait for a maiden Grand Slam title with the French Open triumph this month but said she suffered an Achilles tendon injury during the tournament.

"I'm very sorry to announce that I'm withdrawing from next week's Nature Valley International," Halep said in a statement posted on Twitter Wednesday.

"I was experiencing Achilles tendon pain and inflammation during the French Open and it has yet to fully recover. I've been advised by my doctors that it needs more rest while continuing treatment.

"I loved competing in Eastbourne last year and hope to see you at this wonderful event next year."

Halep is bidding to make her eighth appearance at Wimbledon, which begins on July 2.

With no warm up tournament before Wimbledon, I think she will have an early exit unfortunately. Next the North American HC season.... I hope she does well again in Cincinnati this year and maybe win it finally after 2 lost Finals. Will see...

Major advancement for Simona Halep's cause at W:
Pavlyuchenkova, Kvitova, Sharapova (the last two potential QF opponents and former W champions) have been eliminated.
She should get to the SF.
