According to Romanian media, Simona will receive the National Order "The Star of Romania" (highest civil decoration in Romania) from the Romanian President (who BTW is a tennis fan and recreational player). She will also be the flag bearer for Romania for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Paul Annacone on Tennis Channel and one more commentator (Paul Whartal? sp) picked Halep as the favourite to win USO in the post match analysis!
Depends, in part, on the weather and the court speed at the BJK National Tennis Center. Even tho she is incredibly fit, she tends to fade in high heat/humid conditions -- like at Melbourne and Washington DC.

The slower grass seemed to help her. Will have to see if the USO courts are as slow as they were last year. Of the 4 slams, USO is the weakest for Simona. She is 75%/76% for Wimbledon and RG. 68% win percentage for AO. Only 64% for USO.

Kind of pointless article IMO as it's a new day and a new tournament but realistically, short of winning the title, I think a good strategic outcome for Halep at the end of the tournament would be to do better than Barty, Pliskova, Bartens and Svitolina.

Better than Bartens and Svitolina -> keep #4 ranking ahead of USO
Better than Barty and Pliskova -> close the gap with Barty and widen the gap with Pliskova in the Race and ultimately YE#1

We'll see how things will unfold on court over the next week.....

Pretty classy of Halep to accept to play doubles in Toronto with Fernandez, the 16 years young Canadian who just joined the professional tour.

Probably she knows they will not go far, but she is doing it anyway. Nice gesture that speaks volumes about who she is.

Agreed.

Simona & Leylah Annie Fernandez had a very strong showing in their 1st set winning it 6-1. But ended up losing the 2nd set & the 3rd set TB.

Doubles pair Simona Halep and Leylah Fernandez
The Wimbledon champion and the French Open junior champion, who paired up at the Rogers Cup Tuesday, talk about their first-time partnership.

Watched most of their 1st set and a little bit of the end of the match TB. Was great that Leylah and Simona got off to such a great start against the seeded doubles veterans, Nicole and Kveta. The vets didn't win their serve until the 4th game. And actually that was the only game they won in the first set. They seemed stunned by the neophyte team.

It was cool that Simona let Leylah start off the match serving. Perhaps they wanted to take advantage of her left serve. Or maybe it was cuz of position of the sun. But it appeared to be overcast and shadows were very short. So I assume the match was played mid-day and the sun may not have been much of a factor.

I guess the doubles veterans got over their initial shock and was able to turn it around after the lopsided first set. They were able to elicit a few more error from Simona & Leylah and were finally able to break their serves in that 2nd set. Apparently, Kveta has been ranked as high as number one and has 33 doubles titles to her name. I believe her partner has five WTA doubles titles which would be 1 more than Simona's one doubs title.

Anyone knows what happened to the Halep/Tecau mixed at US Open? The match was cancelled. She withdrew due to exhaustion (or is it injury?) after her loss?

They are supposed to play in the 2020 Olympics and had indicated that they tried to get as much playing time together before then.

Top seed and French Open champion Ashleigh Barty headlines the Red Group, and is joined by Australian Open winner Naomi Osaka, Petra Kvitova and Belinda Bencic.

No.2 seed Karolina Pliskova, the tour leader with four singles titles this year, tops the Purple Group, drawn with Bianca Andreescu, Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina.

Karolina Pliskova vs. Simona Halep | 2019 WTA Finals | WTA Highlights

Cahill, in the OCC, 3rd set, at 2-3:

---
Of course, this match will be remembered for Halep’s coach, Darren Cahill, walking onto the court after Pliskova won her third consecutive game for 3-2 and branding her attitude a “disgrace”. It was a strange decision after a hard-fought game and it didn’t seem to help much. As a viewer, it was an ugly sight. But when Pliskova checks out the highlights of this brilliant victory, she’ll be satisfied by how much she made her rival despair.

[Context in the previous post ^^]
Listen to this (Australian?) Podcast:
Darren Cahill on SEN Breakfast (4/11/19)

Former Tennis player and now the coach of Simona Halep Darren Cahill joins the show after the furore over his on court comments to his player.
Says in 8-10 previous matches Simona didn't correct losing, erratic course after a technical-style talk, so he felt he had to get otherwise to her.

That is quite interesting, Marius; Simona's post-Wimbledon loss of form analysed, some things explained.

On a lighter note, according to Romanian press, Simona is to marry shady boyfriend next year, after the USO. He is 13 years older than her and has been married before. Twice.

Very happy for her win but let's not get carried away calling her the best looking woman on tour.
She does carry herself well though.

Oh well. Her choice.

Training in offseason in Dubai - not Romania, not Australia. Cahill's there.
Perhaps inspired by Fed, thus good idea

To start in Adelaide, with:
Ashleigh Barty, Petra Kvitova, Kiki Bertens, Johanna Konta, Sofia Kenin, Petra Martic, Marketa Vondrousova, Donna Vekic, Alison Riske si Angelique Kerber.

Simona Halep has just changed her secondary coach:
from Daniel Dobre to Artemon Apostu Efremov, who
previously coached Irina Begu, then Mihaela Buzarnescu.
No reason given.

Won't play in the FedCup tie with Russia in Cluj-Napoca.
High about the Olympics, though.
Thinks 2019 was her best year with the W, but recognizes having been tired many times.

Simona now back up to #2 in the (live) rankings. With Karolina, Serena and Naomi out, the betting odds have Simona and Ash B nearly equal to take AO this year. Coco G after those two

Marius, wouldn't you say the time has come to change the title of the thread? At 28, Simona is hardly a hope anymore. She is more of a hope (partly) come true, with 2 slams and various other titles...

I really hope she is not going to disappoint tonight against Kontaveit.... She was pretty solid so far in this tournament and she has a real chance to go all the way. Sure Muguruza and Barty are tough potential match ups but who knows.....

Great match from Halep last night. It would be a pitty not to go all the way at this point but it won't be easy. Muguruza is in great shape at the moment and anything can happen.
Good luck tonight!

Have my fingers crossed for Simona. But it would also be kewl to see Garbine reach a slam final again as well. Either way, it's gonna be tough to take down Ash (unless the Aussie pressure gets to her... doubtful tho).

Personally, based on what I've seen so far, I'm more concerned about Muguruza than Barty
and of course most concerned about Simona herself.

Will see soon enough.
