Who do you now consider the greater Japanese player?

Nishikori has won 11 titles dating as far back as 2008 but none greater than a 500 category. He has won his home tournament, the Japan Open, twice and has been ranked as high as world #4 in the ATP rankings, currently #12.

Osaka has won just 2 titles, both of them this year, but 1 is a Slam and the other a Premier Manadatory, the equivalent of an ATP Masters 1000. She has yet to win her home tournament, the Toray Pan Pacific Open and is currently ranked #7 in the WTA rankings which is her highest ranking.

Thoughts?

Osaka- She already won a Slam.Meanwhile Nishikori is never going to win a Slam which is shame because I would like to see him win at least one but it is not going to happen. If CIlic was not GOATing in the US Open 2014 final,Nishikori would have won that final.

I chose Nishikori simply because he has won more over many years, remaining near the top over a long time. Naomi has a slam, certainly tops him there, but will she maintain a winning record? I actually suspect she will and sure will be rooting for her!

Achievements? Osaka clearly.

Obviously Kei had a much longer run as a top 10 player, but to be honest his form was always so dodgy match to match, never had a run of true consistency. And even if Osaka retired tomorrow she'd eclipse him because of major and mastsers wins.

So, yes, Naomi.

They don't play on the same court, at the same time, so neither

But if they did play on the same court at the same time, I would expect the result to go the way the result would be expected to go, which would be to the greater player

So you would go by H2H rather than accomplishments?

It must be hard for Nishikori, so long feted in Japan as their greatest player, to suddenly be overtaken quite suddenly by young Naomi Osaka.

I wonder if any of his many sponsorship deals from Japanese companies will eventually be diverted towards Osaka especially if she continues the stunning form she has displayed this year?

Osaka has a 2-0 H2H lead on the GOATess.
And she handled her superbly last time they met on the biggest scenario.

Nishikori is toyed by GOATs and wannabe GOATs.

How much do the Japense care about women’s tennis as compared to men’s?

according to tennisabstract, Nish is 9-38 vs top 5, Naomi is 2-9... lets call it a sort of draw.

In the WTA top 10, Osaka's top 5 wins is way behind players like Woz, Halep, Ostapenko, Kerber, well nearly all of them.

I believe that Osaka will likely improve her top 5 record. She has to if she wants to be a consistent force at the top.

Let's compare them at aged 20, and in 8 years, at aged 28. What did Kei achieve at 20, and what will Naomi achieve at 28?
Anyway, Naomi has always held Kei in high regard, and has always made it clear that she is coming for his Japanese records.

Well, he had a chance to win a slam against a non-Big 3 opponent in the final, something other players like Tsonga, Gonzalez, Baghdatis didn't have.
Raonic, Wawrinka, Djokovic, Cilic is the typical weak draw.

The Dimi Raonic Nishi trio shows that you can have won greater achievements, without necessarily being the greater player.
To the truly top guys Nishikori has always been the underdog with a clear physical limitation.

Osaka doesn't really have this issue, but its a given she'll win much more than Kei.
