Greatest ever Agassi matches?

Having been a fan for many years, it would be interesting to know what people regard as the greatest matches in Andre's career.

For me I'd have to include the following: (in no particular order)

v Blake - US Open quarters 2005 (nothing needs to be said about it)
v Roddick - Cincinatti semis 2004 (a tremendous match with tiebreak final set)
v Rafter - Aussie Open semis 2001 (5 sets against the home favourite)
v Sampras - Aussie Open semis 2000 (5 sets of brilliance from both)
v Medvedev - French Open final 1999 (what a comeback)
v Ivanisevic - Wimbledon final 1992 (an unexpected victory)
v Hewitt - US Open semis 2002 (a lesson from both in baseline rallies)

As much as I don't like to see him lose, I'd have to also say that the 2001 US Open quarters against Sampras, the two classic semi finals against Rafter at Wimbledon and also the semi final against Safin at the Aussie Open last year must also be included.

Thoughts?!

I'd include his round robin match with JC Ferrero at the 2003 Masters Cup in Houston. Having lost the first rr match in a third set tiebreak to Federer after holding match point, another great match that should be included on your list, AA was down a set and a break and on his way out of the tournament. Ferrero was up 30-love, serving at 3-2 if I recall. Anyway, Andre missed two easy shots and he smashed his racquet on the ground, breaking it and drawing a warning from the the chair. That was the first time in forever that I had seen AA lose it like that. It got the crowd fired up, they in turn fired him up and he went on to break back, win the set and the match. He also beat Nalbandian in the last rr match, Schuettler in the SF after losing the first set and got clocked by Federer in the final. But it was something to remember.

Incidentally, Federer cites those two wins over Agassi, the first against AA in his career, as a key turning point for him.

What about his '89 US Open win over Connors? That was the first 5 set win of his career. And many think he orchestrated it by tanking the 3rd set.

'94 US Open 4th Round vs Chang was a big match as well. Agassi was unseeded, Chang was top 10. When it went 5 many picked Chang(he didn't lose to many 5 setters) Agassi won it 6-1 & went on to win the event.

The match against Chang US 4th Round was pretty special. One of the best matches , in terms of agressive tennis could be the QF US Open against Pete. Both champs showing agressive intent from first ball to last, Not Givin an Inch.
Also the spell in 95 was pretty stunning, against Sampras.

Thanks Kevin for a great post, I've been an Agassi fan for years and every match I get to see him play is just fantastic but for me but I have to say the 2001 Aussie Open semis against Rafter is truly imbedded in my memory.

I hope Agassi sticks around for one more year, and they honor him at the U.S Open next year, he could have had 12 slams if it wasnt for Pete.He has given us alot of memories even for those that are not Agassi fans.

Roddick take note!

so true!
hopefully roddick can learn from andre. roddick will never be as great as federer but he could still have an incredible hall of fame career if he just works on being the best he can be.
agassi i'm sure got disheartened at times by sampras but he presevered and he is a true champion - one of the all-time greats!!

but sometimes people forget that most of their matches were of the grand slam victories pete had over andre were in the us open and wimb... but the matches in the aussi open, and french andre won,, so imagine if they played more in the aussi or french,, maybe agassi would have more victories??

1995 Australian Open Finals vs. Sampras

Not as much for greatness (think it went four sets) but it proved Andre was for real, and set up a classic season of Pete vs. Andre.

Remember, it was the first grand slam after he won the '94 USO, was also the first where he shaved his head; kind of the "new" Andre (or the 2nd or 3rd re-incarnation).

I'll go back to 1989 his Davis Cup match against then Wimbledon champ Boris Becker. Early days of power tennis and I was in awe of the match up... an all out powerful serve and volley'er versus an younger free wheeling baseliner. It was a seesawing match of improbable winners (shots) after winners.

Agassi eventually loss the match after winning the first 2 sets. Scores were 7-6, 7-6, 6-7, 3-6, 4-6.

Wimbledon 1992.

Boy was I cheering him on!

All his matches against Rafter have been thrillers, while the 2001 Quarter Final against Sampras, when neither lost their serve was one of the all time greatest matches....EVER.

His loss to Gomez in 1990

I think that Agassi's loss to A. Gomez in the final of FO 15 years ago was one of the most signicant matches of his career. Gomez really taught young Agassi how it is wise to play tennis in different sitations. Probably that loss made Agassi a real master in tennis!
