Grigor Dimitrov Beats Carlos Alcaraz To Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award

Carlos Alcaraz will not end 2024 with one final honor after Grigor Dimitrov won the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award.

The new season does not begin until December 27th at the United Cup, but many fans kept themselves entertained by predicting who would win the end-of-year awards handed out to ATP and WTA stars.

Many of those honors have now been given. Aryna Sabalenka won the WTA Player of the Year Award for her outstanding season, which included securing two Grand Slams and finishing as the year-end No. 1.

Sabalenka beat other players like Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek to the award. Gauff was the 2024 WTA Finals champion, beating Swiatek and Sabalenka during her run to the title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Swiatek claimed a fourth French Open title, but tennis fans worldwide were left stunned when it was revealed she accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for the banned substance clostebol.

Sabalenka also received the Gerry Diamond ACES award in recognition of her work and dedication to promoting women’s tennis to fans, media, and local communities by taking part in off-court promotional and charitable activities.

Ons Jabeur was another WTA player given two awards: the Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award and the Peachy Kellmeyer Player Service Award, both voted on by other female players.

Alcaraz has kept himself occupied this month by competing in two exhibitions in the United. The first was a victory against Ben Shelton at Madison Square Garden, while the second ended in defeat to Frances Tiafoe in Charlotte.

The Spaniard's friendly and personable attitude on the court, combined with his entertaining playing style, make him the perfect man for exhibitions. Andy Roddick was amazed by his efforts against Shelton and Tiafoe.

Alcaraz also has a similar attitude in professional matches. He routinely smiles on the court and shows respect to opponents. Throwing his racket at the Paris Masters was a rare outburst from him.

Those attributes led to his being named last year's Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award winner. He was in the running to retain the honor, which is voted on by fellow players, but Dimitrov has beaten him to it.

Dimitrov is one of the most well-liked men on the ATP Tour, as demonstrated by his friendships with numerous other players. That includes Novak Djokovic, with whom Dimitrov played an exhibition earlier this year.

The Bulgarian was thrilled to receive the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award and thanked the players and his fans. He also promised to keep working hard and striving to be the best player and person possible.

"I'm just very grateful, very thankful to all my fans, to all my colleagues, to everyone that has been such a support throughout all this time. I feel very fortunate. Thank you all for this amazing appreciation, and I'll make sure to keep on going and to keep on striving to be the best."
Alcaraz is focused on preparing for the new season after playing the previously mentioned exhibitions in the United States. His plans have been altered after Jack Draper withdrew from a pre-season camp with him because of an injury.

Baby Fed is following in Pap Fed's footsteps.

It turns out that Dimitrov is simply Federer with bionic limbs and eyes. Dimitrov is better, stronger, and faster than Federer. Here's the proof:

Not even a Dimi fan, but he is by far the most deserving. Been the epitome of a true sportsman for years. Glad to see him finally get recognition.

See? Nice guys don't always finish last.

I am delighted that Grigor won the SESA, congratulations! :) In his case, it can be said that it is truly an award for his sportsmanship and not for his popularity among players, as was the case with a large part of Federer' awards and all of Nadal' awards.

Man, how did you assess that Roger's 13 wins of this award were for popularity among players and not "truly an award for his sportsmanship"? As I understand it, players vote for this award - how did you differentiate between 'popularity' and 'popularity for sportsmanship'?

As for Grigor, comes across as a likeable dude, good sense of humour, a gentleman. Congratulations to him for winning it. I can understand why Grigor is popular and respected by his peers.

Thread title refers to Carlitos - good nomination, and winner in 2023. Also nominated were Casper Ruud ( who won it in 2022) and Dominic Theim. Interesting that 2 of the 4 nominees this year are past winners.

I saw Grigor play Hubie in Roland this year and he was indeed a class act, because at one point Hurcakz kinda lost his mind and Grigor tried to cheer him up a bit. By far the best match I had the chance to see too so far IRL.

Does Dimitrov do the ear celebration too?
If not, then maybe that hurt Alcaraz's chances :happydevil:
Or maybe the ear celebration is innocent!

I'm not saying Roger didn't deserve any of his 13 SESA awards. However, I have my doubts about some of his awards, especially the 2009 award, which he didn't deserve due to his angry comments on court during the US Open final or for a derogatory comment towards Djokovic at the Australian Open. Unfortunately, the repeated wins by Federer and then Nadal show that SESA has become a popularity poll, with pro-players voted for Fedal because of their star power. Pro-players have forgotten the true meaning of sportsmanship.

............ Pro-players have forgotten the true meaning of sportsmanship.
As you've acknowledged above, this award to Grigor shows, 'true' sportsmanship is still current, and rewarded. Hope this continues to be the case. Don't agree your repeated assumptions / judgements, but that's it from me as this thread is for Grigor.

Apropo of nothing in particular other than an example of his sense of humour, I enjoyed this take on the shbh from Grigor & some others - an example of his being a good sport / his sense of humour:

This love letter to tennis shows his gratitude for his career / is a glimpse into his background:

Yah man, Grigor was excellent, getting through to his first quarters at the FO. As I recall, HH wanted the umpire replaced! Enjoyed Grigor's engagement with his team mates at the Laver Cup 2024 too.

Because Fedal is finished. Grigor should have gotten SESA several times, but was denied due to Fedal' popularity between pro-players.

Is this because Alcaraz criticized the jam-packed tennis schedule but then plays many tennis exhibitions? Maybe ATP is not happy being criticized.

Grigor almost always participates in the kids day activities at IW, at least the last few years. Comes out and hits w the kids. My son hit a tweener (forward half volley) against him, and grigor wasn't phased. The guy knows trick shots. Seems like a genuinely great guy.
