I know, ultimately all comes down to preference, and I read most threads about it here on the forum as well as many articles/tutorials out there... I might have some confusion:
So having said, as a basic "rule" you should take your grip in a FH grip and have space for the index finger. OR if you want to be more precised, measure with a ruler the top of your ring finger to the bottom horizontal crease of your palm.
Since my stringer some months ago pointed out to me that the grip I use is way to small he adviced me to increase it with a heat shrink + a thick basic grip, and adviced me to use at least 1 OG, which I did.
Since I am know buying a new racket, and I do not want to add too much grips and weight to avoid big changes of balance, I want in advance make a better choice.
The racket I currently use with the grip customized like mentioned above (heat shrink, +1,9mm basic grip + 1 OG Wilson Pro) feels good for me, but as you can see it is still on the edge... (for sure not too big).
Now my big misunderstanding of measuring the whole thing:
when I measure from my ring finger to the bottom horizontal crease of my palm I get exactly 130mm!! Yes, I am a 6'4 tall guy, but my hands are not outstanding big for my total height. No idea which grip size that would be... at least way more than what is normally sold.
I also checked the statement 'most pros nowadays use smaller grips' by watching most current 20 ATP pros in slow motion forehand, and see how big the space between there palms and fingers actually is.
At Berrettini, Nadal, Isner and Tsitsipas there were no grip visible, so I guess the use a rather small grip for their hands. Whereas many others use 'normal' grip, where the space is very clearly visible, among others Federer, Goffin and Djokovic. (Fed and Goffin might have eastern grips..)
Am I measuring wrong? Or do I have 'strange' horizontal creases on my palm?
Anyway, I am quite sure I will order an L4 grip size, for the simple reason that bigger ones are not easily available, and that the one I use now with basically 3 "grips" is quite good, but L4 would allow me to use only one (leather) basic grip + 1 OG and therefore I need not additionally heat shink, which would increase my SW more (leather grip is enough)
I dont know how I insert the picture with previews, so you have to click on the links to see it.
