Lol
Do people really think he is that big??

Disgust.

Frankly, I do. Love him or loathe him, antics or not, he is a big draw and people come to watch him to see what bag of trick shots he will pull out and even if it is just to see him meltdown. He may delight or appal them, maybe in equal measure, but they do find him entertaining.

Look at all the people who were in the stands for his match with Khachanov the other night. I suspect they weren't really there for Karen, talented player as he is.

Sometimes you've got to see past the dollar in front of you. Kyrgios is a star, but he would be no less of a star if he wasn't abusing officials. Ultimately if the sport allows players to abuse officials, intimidate them and insult them by spitting in their direction it will be to the detriment of the game.

Had this argument with a friend the other night.

I don't like Kyrgios and I don't like his antics but at the end of the day, tournaments would love to have him.

He's box office, he brings truck loads of people to tournaments and gives tournaments headlines they might not otherwise receive in many places. Nobody would care about a Khachanov v Aussie match but Khachanov v Kyrgios with drama? That makes global headlines.

Yup, look at someone like Zverev who is out there demanding $400,000 in appearance fees whilst Kyrgios will sell probably more tickets (depending on the country) and will probably get fined the majority of his prize money anyway! It's a win/win for the tournament.

Now that we're done overrating his talent, we're now down to overrating his draw and star power.

nick does generate a lot of interest, but also i just dont for anything that sam has to say after he wrote that article and made such a big deal that serena wasn't aware barty was no.1 but completely ignored all the nice things she said so w/e.

Sports has proved over and over, money rules. Fines are a joke.

Funny the WTA has several ad series on fighting bullying, but apparently respect end on the court a d anything goes if they can sell tickets.

We’ve seen plenty of talented players who were athletic and entertaining without school kid drama and unsportsmanlike conduct.

The stands were mostly empty last night! Kyrgios didn't draw a big crowd. Even if there was a half decent audience when the match started, they obviously didn't like what they saw and left midway through because the place was almost empty when it ended.

he’s right and honestly i don’t mind. people have short memories—connora and nastase for example said and did far worse. tennis thrives on money and attention not honor, and nobody’s dying out there as a result of nicks victimization complex, be it real or imagined. fans of the sport should be happy with the interest he brings. not that i’m trying to should anybody to death but enough already. it’s fun and i certainly look forward to his matches.

Wish I could like this post lol. The only thing really world class in Kyrgios' game is his serve and it's one of the best I have seen and it makes him a very dangerous opponent. Everything else is just average or above average. I just fail to see his much touted talent. No, hitting trick shots because you don't give a f is not talent. Many players can hit those between the legs shots, they just don't because those aren't high percentage shots.

As for his star power, no one goes to a tournament specifically to see Kyrgios. You would not find a single person who would travel to NYC from outside mainly to see Kyrgios. I mean who doesn't mind a clown show but that's not really the main attraction of a circus!

They are there to witness drama. He creats drama with his constant charades and arguments. People want to see that. His servebot game and TBs is not what's drawing crowds.

And Groth very possibly watch wrestling, Kim Kardashian and Big Brother... As many, many other too... I wouldn't be proud to admit that, but those kind of people are proud of what they should be ashamed off...

He says he prefer to watch 66th or what player on the world over top 10? That shows that he is really not into good tennis but want to watch reality show, full of swearing, arguing, spitting, 16+ stuff. He probably should bring his kids to watch too... What else you can see on Kyrgios match, nothing, ok tweeners too.....He even has worst back handling in history of the sport, bad sample for kids too...

Its ok to be ***** and like this kind of stuff... But don't tell that publicly, its not something to be proud of...

Groth was a ****house player and now even worse as a commentator. He took a break from tennis to play AFL so that says a fair bit about what he has between the ears.

Let's face it. Tennis is boring right now with Djokovic winning everything and Next gen being a joke. Fans need something to be entertained by even if he's controversial. Hopefully the tennis gods will smile down on Medvedev tomorrow and end this bore.

gives tournaments headlines they might not otherwise
Tennis gets a lot of headlines in my cricket crazy country thanks to Nick.

Prior to the FO there was this big backpage one saying "Kyrgios Circus Rolls into Paris" LOL.
He didn't even play !

His underhand serve got a half page analysis with diagrams. His comments about Nadal and Joker also made headlines.

Medvedev is also quite a bore. Just doesn't know how to smile.
Maybe a really nice guy, but not too interesting to watch.

Another Cilic.

How that clown can be bigger than Djoker and Andeh is beyond me.
But whatever. I am sick of talking about that guy.
DELETE THREAD. BAN KYRGIOS.

Kyrgios is definitely a bigger draw than Novak. Novak is completely boring without Fedal (or NK) on the other side.
You are wrong. Djoker played interesting matches against Wawrinka, del Potro or even against Murray (even if I know, that this matchup is considered bad for tracking). No tennis player in the last 10 years has been associated with as many epic matches as Djoker.

It's another example of disrespect for Djoker, 16-time Grand Slam champion. Moreover, it is not true that Nick attracts more crowds than Novak. Who saw Nick's match with Karen in Cincinnati confirms that the auditorium was not filled.

It's a shame that this never got built up by the press as a great rivalry. Maybe they were too nice to each other?

Agree. So many high quality matches between those two  Stan forces Novak to do things outside his comfort zone. Lock down mode is not enough to beat Stan in form. One of the reasons why I love this matchup so much. Always aggressive tennis. Talking about 2013 -> of course.

I am a huge Stan fan, and many times have I wondered if his career could have rocketed if if if... I mean, he got robbed at AO13, and he was in superb form at the time. He should have served for the match. I am sure Novak had his chances too, but it's always uncool when the umpire influences the score directly. "Definitely long". You just don't say that when the ball is in.

All true. I was thinking about the eternal "why isn't Novak more popular" thing and wondering if it was because his rivaly was with Fedal (who of course had their existing story) rather than having rivalries of his own. Then realised how daft that was considering his matches with Stan (OK - Murrovic was a bit dour) - why was this never seen as an amazing rivalry? The only thing I could think of was that maybe the press couldn't get away from Fedal and had problems seeing Stan as a player in his own right anyway.

If Fed and Nads really wanted to mess with Novak's head they should just retire tomorrow. With no prospect of any rival on the horizon Novak would win the next ten slams but other than his fans it's hard to see who could be excited about it. The tension is needed.

Interesting. Novak's rivalries are so different. Agent Federer, lock down is enough. Federer can "control" the matches and be "the better player", but Novak has one thing in mind on big points; no errors - Fed will make them. Against Nadal it's more like a last man standing thing. At least it used to be. Nadal is trying to shorten the points now. Stan has both will and physicality to go toe to toe with Novak. AND he has Fedal's ability to hit through him at the same time, while he doesn't hold back or freak out on big points like Federer does. Also backhand to backhand is probably Stan's favourite drill :) 2014-2016 he was second best slam player behind Novak with three championships.

It's sad for tennis that Novak didn't get a rival at the later stages of his incredible career.

It's always been mental with Stan - I suspect he's one of these people who has weird existential crises all the time. He's probably the only player that I would be genuinely interested to read an autobiography if he ever did one. For all that he gets annoyed playing second fiddle I think he might have found the extra pressure when he was younger quite difficult to cope with.

I still hope someone will emerge from the pack. If we look at threads from the last ten years a lot of seemingly bolted on predictions turned out to be garbage - there's an awful lot of "Fed won't survive this terrible blow" from 08/09 and Djoko in 2015 was going to have taken the Slam record by now. Admittedly it's becoming harder to convince myself.

I think we agree ;) Check out this thread:

We've been wanting new players to emerge for 10 years now, and no one, apart from Stan, has done it. Well, Cilic to some extent.

Federer being where he is at 38 leaves only two choices: He is too extraordinary - or the field is very weak. I lean towards the latter. I didn't even understand what people meant when they said Novak was incredible at Wimbledon. He absolutely wasn't and I am sure he was surprised to win.

Great minds!! That was a good thread - although someone was getting touchy....

I'm sure a few of Novak's more "committed" fans are secret Fed plants. They couldn't choose a worse way of getting people to appreciate him.
