i tried to watch the end of the wta finals today but had to stop because they were grunting so loud it was annoying..and sharapova & azeranka weren't even playing!

can someone tell me:
1) why wta players grunt to an annoying level and atp players don't? are wta players actually exerting more physical effort than the men?
2) whos telling/teaching them to do this? coaches?
3) why are they telling them to do this? is it supossed to help their game? i dont really think its necessary considering the men dont do it and some others on wta dont do it either

1) because someone started a trend, thinking that it is a great idea to put the opponent under additional pressure and then it caught fire on the WTA. And I mean FIRE
ATP players don't use it as much (some do to a lesser extend) as a gamesmanship, partly because they consider it girly partly because they have more important things to execute during play
2) yes, coaches
3) it abuses their opponent's senses in more than one way. Intimidation factor and making difficult/impossible to hear the sound when the ball contacts the stringbed that gives valuable info about the shot that is being played

if that's the case that's pretty catty of them & it should be banned, period. they should have a decibel device on court and anyone that goes above the allowed decibels gets an infraction. case closed. if viewers can't even watch these matches because of this, the wta deserves to be in the shadows of the atp as a second rate tour & deserves what it gets..

Shrieking in yesterday SF match between Kuznetsova and Cibulkova was even worse.

I blame Seles (even as her fan I thought her grunting was unbearable)

The only thing it really does is regulate your breathing. Inhale as the ball comes, exhale on contact. I forget exactly what it does, but works if you lose rythem.

Vesnina's grunting is also annoying, but at the same time hilarious because it sounds like a colloquial "word" in Singapore, :)

Seles' grunting made women's tennis so exciting. She was fearless, unique and so offensive. The grunting fit so perfectly. Oh how I miss her. The current grunters suck.

Two hands on both sides takes a lot of work. I just dont like the average shot grunt, we can see they didnt push themselves, yet same grunt.

Unless its a grunting drop shot (always funny) it shouldnt be allowed. I cant watch womens tennis on my phone in public any longer unless i explain to others what im watching.

You can thank Monica Seles for the grunting in the WTA. She's the godmother of grunting. I'm glad she went out out when she did, but unfortunately it was too late, people already started to accept / tolerate that horrible noise she made.

i think they made seles stop grunting in a wimbledon final one year ( and she lost)... they should make the rest stop!

1) Because they do it for gamesmanship and to put off the opponent. Some WTA players have natural grunts that are clearly from effort but others, such as Sharapova and Vika, are clearly used to put off opponents.

2) Probably noone, Sharapova was famous for not doing it during practises and warm-ups yet would do it in matches. Showing it was pure gamesmanship

3) People get taught to exhale when hitting a shot improves the power of said shot. That is the reason and if some of the WTA tour did it on shots that obviously had power to them then it would be fine but its EVERY shot. I once saw a Vika match where she shrieked (not grunted) whilst hitting a dropshot. A DROPSHOT!?
