Grunting...

I hate to think what these players' throats/larynges are going to feel like when they reach 40 (or even earlier). They will so wish they hadn't screamed/grunted their way through tennis matches. Could even lead to cancer, actually more than likely...

I remember once that Federer once complained about this very thing
I advise anyone, who has not watched the match with Cilic to do so, and then see for himself, how Nadal starts and stops grunting at will.

Then those who are bold enough can come back to me and give their explanation as to why that is and how so.

He and Djokovic do it intermittently, and it bothers me. Either do it all the time, or none at all.

It's like they forget to do it for a few games and then go "oh, this is important. better grunt"

Or, to be precise: " Now is the time to put extra pressure on my opponent. Better grunt.".

Really, it is almost comical when one watches matches and notices it.

If true, then why didn't past women's champions grunt? They hit the ball as hard as they could with their wood or graphite rackets. King, Evert, Martina, Graf--- none of them grunted.

Also, no male player grunted in the past either, except on serves. There's was no one in the 70's, 80's or 90's who grunted like Nadal.
Possibly because they weren’t taught to grunt the way modern players are. Conners, Seles, and Agassi were the first players I remember grunting. But even they didn’t sound as crazy loud as the players today. Although people did complain about Seles and Agassi back in the day.

Hate to beat a dead horse here.

I understand the women grunt because it's the result of an exertion of more energy to hit "harder".

My question is, I've seen Sharapova, Vika, and even Serena stop their grunt on a ball hit into the net.

It's likely even when they hit the ball into the net, they're swinging just as hard as when they hit the ball in, with the exception of a different swing path causing the ball to go in the net.

Why is it they can stop their grunt in mid action when they see the ball hit the net, but when the ball is traveling to their opponents side, they choose to elongate the grunt?

And how do you understand the reasons behind men's grunting? Like Sonego's right now.

Imo most of the time this grunting is fake - look at azarenka - many pornstars could learn from her (and the others...)
