Gut mains/Alu crosses not sure I get it

An expensive restring for a seasoned poly user. Strung the champions choice in my yonex vcore 100 strung at 55/51

Never tried gut before and boy it might seem a bit too powerful, the feeling is pretty metallic also not as silky soft as I interpreted by various reviews, sound at impact can be a bit tinny...things improved as I started to get used to it hit out a bit, certainly seems as much spin as any shaped, twisted poly's I've used if not more.

Jury's still out but the Xone biphase and think it was twisted gamma poly seems to be more consistent and at the same tensions certainly less powerful by quite a margin. Still it's in now so a few more hours and we'll see..

Am I missing something or is the magic just about to come?:?

It's Wilson gut as a champs choice half and half package, thought I'd go for that as a try it out set...

So what were you looking for in this setup that you didn't find? Also, I'm not sure what the rationale would be to use ALU Rough in the crosses. I thought the whole point was to use a smooth/slick poly, not something textured/twisted as that would inhibit both snapback of the mains and cut through the gut.

i'm not sure then. i've tried gut/ALU power but not ALU rough before. gut/ALU power plays beautifully for me.

Tried this same setup and definitely allows you to hit out on the ball but for me, it felt a tad stiff. But the problem is Alu in general doesn't last very long and thus it didn't feel so good after 8 hours or so of play. I also think using the smooth Alu instead of Alu Rough would be a better choice.

It's a 3 hour setup with ALU. You would want a better cross to be honest. CoFocus is a lot better suited.

It also takes some time to get used to. You need to have good strokes that aren't about muscling the ball and are instead based on core rotation and a relaxed swing.

i've got more than 5 hrs in my PS85 so far and it's still playing well although i can feel the crosses have lost quite a bit of tension.

but you are definitely right about having a smooth swing. this string set up encourages a nice relax swing. when you do that, the results are great.

If you think Alu doesn't hold tension well, Alu rough is even worse. The beauty of this setup is really the ease of power, spin and comfort. Instead of feeling like grinding the ball with full poly(nothing wrong with that!), with gut/poly the feeling is more like brushing and controlling the power and spin with with buttery smooth comfort.

Moving from poly, my suggestion is to change your stroke to brush the ball more, get use to that free butter power =D

I honestly don't think it's buttery at all...the Xone biphase with poly crosses had far greater comfort IMHO...I'll try it again for a few hours tomorrow but first impressions are usually pretty telling..

X1 is pretty good string but after 8 hours, you will see what happens :).

Another 2 hrs on it...I can see the appeal, top quality strokes result in top quality shots but even more so on this string. It was a bit windy today and a few times got caught out a bit close on a few inside out forehands and ended miles out. I don't think I'm as consistent with this set-up and a few cannons with it..felt better and so far no arm issues or signs of wear...think it has slackened off a fair bit but still playable.

Long term I don't think I'm a gut/poly man. You have to try these things though, certainly wasn't what I was expecting. Definitely the most powerful set-up I've tried to date.

I've tried Alu and didn't like it. My favorite crosses with gut are CoFocus and Focus Hex depending upon the frame.

Mrsbrownsboys, don't draw any conclusion from this first setup that you have yet. From your posts, it is obvious that 55/51 is too loose for the way you hit your ball. I would say, maybe up the tension a little, like 57/52 or 57/53, and see how that feel. I bet you will get much more control. The problem, of course, is that it will cost you a bundle to keep testing and restringing Wilsons Champions choice.

A 100 in^2 racket strung at 55/51 gut/poly is strung too low. Depending on how fast you swing, it may be need to be closer to 62/54. On the BLX 90, I'm at 58/50, on the 6.1 95 I'm at 60/52. Any less, and shots go long.

With gut/poly, you have to take a full rip on swings. You'll see the benefit at ultra fast swings. Since you have the frame strung so low, you'll have to add a humongous vibration dampener to deaden the stringbed a bit.

Ahh ok. Good advice, I do think it vibrates quite a bit, hence my comments about it feeling a bit tinny...

Is Wilson a good choice gut or is there anything less powerful? I owe to myself to try tonic or pacific with co-focus

6th hour on this and the crosses feel like iron, soon as I warmed up with I thought it was dead. Never known poly go like that before...felt pretty uncomfortable too.
Gut has started to split in a few places too...suddenly BHBR has an awful lot of appeal again
