Gut/poly hybrid suggestions

HOT SHOT

Rookie
Hi there my two favourite gut/poly hybrids are VS/RPM and VS/4G in a yonex ezone DR (both at 50LBS)

and here's my short list of what I plan to try next

VS/ALU rough 52LBS (hated smooth alu)
VS/4G rough 50LBS
VS/Hyper G 52LBS
VS/element 50LBS
VS/diamond Rough 51LBS
VS/ Max power rough 50LBS

WANTING YOUR SUGGESTIONS

Wow you use a low tension for gut hybrid. Do you have enough control at that tension?

Have only tried gut poly hybrid a few times and didnt really like any of them, though would like to try it with max power. Maybe. Only use the Klip gut from Tennis only, VS and other guts play too soft for my liking. MSV focus hex is cheap at TO and really hard and slippery for the gut to snap back on if you like the spin.

I would skip all of the rough and shaped crosses. All that will do is saw through your gut quicker. Instead, either use their round equivalents or just find a round string that plays very similar. If you really like a shaped string that doesn't have a round equivalent you can try it, but like I said, don't expect the gut to last as long. It already doesn't last that long for me, so I want to do whatever I can to keep it lasting as long as possible since it's playability will stick with it.

My all-time favorite hybrid setup is Luxilon Natural Gut/4G. The lux gut is a little less powerful than VS and a little more dampened of a feel. I'm not a fan of strings that feel too dampened (Head Hawk was a nightmare for me outside of the first 4 hours), but it being gut and also having 4G in the crosses it felt great. I played it right along side a VS/4G hybrid for my comparison.

Also, I would suggest stringing your gut tighter than the poly. They are completely different feeling string types and should be treated differently. If you do really like them being the same that's fine; there's nothing wrong with that. But don't string them the same just to have them the same tension. The vast majority of people who do gut/poly hybrids will drop at least 2 pounds, sometimes 10+ pounds going from the gut to the poly. I did mine at 54/50.

all the smooth hybrids I've tried I haven't liked them as much as hybrids with shaped and yes durabiliy will suffer a little bit but the gut will remain playable till it breaks and it's not like I'm using something as aggressive as say Barbwire, Tornado or black widow etc

Never tried 4G, currently using Revolve as cross with gut main. Is 4G smooth? I know it is supposed to have great tension maintenance which is tempting me to try it.

Yes, 4G is smooth. They make a rough version and a soft version as well, but the normal 4G is smooth and does have great tension maintenance for a poly.

as long as you got no arm issues and string it 15% lower give it a go nothing tops it for tension maintenance apart from gut
