It depends on the people and how the met. I’ve had a female best friend for over twenty years and she’s like a sister to me (yes she’s attractive) Now if there’s an attraction or romantic feelings by either party, that’s when it gets tricky. Are heterosexual men and women capable of just being friends? Of course they are. Realistically does it happen on a sincere basis, without any hidden motives and on a platonic level? I would say not that often.

The people who say it’s possible should clarify if that’s indeed possible for both parties of the friendship.
Many straight people say that they effectively have or had a platonic opposite sex friendship. Are they absolutely sure the other party feels the same?

I said 'there can be', so my opinion is correct as it's not absolute.
It hasn’t happened to me I started to get interested in a male friend like that. Within the years every male friend been eventually saying he was interested all along (even though that was clarified was not the case, sometimes for years on). Been a disappointment for me as I’ve been like a tomboy and liking mens interests (such as sport and competition which very few women like the same).
I just know for me that Im not ok having male friends when I am in a relationship/married. I also wouldn’t like if my partner had a female friend.

I think it becomes easier as you get older. I know twenty to thirty year old women have no real interest in an older man. This has allowed me to have good relationships with this age group. When forty or less, there was always an underlying tension.

Joyce didn't think so, of course (from "A Painful Case," Dubliners):
Love between man and man is impossible because there must not be sexual intercourse and friendship between man and woman is impossible because there must be sexual intercourse.
But then Joyce was something of a misogynist which combined with his hero (read: self) complex has always kept me from endorsing "The Dead" or Ulysses wholeheartedly. And many if not most people on the nay side have always put me off the same way.

Also the fact that so many are still asking this question in the 21st century when Austen remains one of the world's most popular writers tells me they're not reading her closely enough.

What you mean is that they treat you like their father or uncle.

I would not like that because I am a boyish-looking handsome guy.

It is an one way thing for guys being friends with hot girls. A chance to do it! Been repeated a thousand and one episodes in Jerry Springer Show! Guys want to be her friend in the hopes that he will in the future be her guy! Never happens! Girls go for the bad boy Alpha male in their prime years 18-28 years. Super hot girls get the famous and the money guys. After that, they will slowly accept betas in their 30s but betas will not jump into this gleefully!

Solution if you're a guy: stop being a f**king beta.

It's a pizza turnover. Can also refer to underpants / panties in Mexican Spanish (slang?). If it has other meanings, as @Rubens suggests, I was not aware of it... but I'm ancient and sometimes outa touch.
Not a slang. In some Spanish speaking countries, that would be calzón (singular), or calzones (plural), for women underwear.
Men’s underwear is named calzoncillos.

Looking at the poll results, I wonder why is it that a higher proportion of women than men believe that opposite sex sincere friendships are possible.

Cool. I was in a calzone once. Best thing ever. But then she wanted a serious relationship. Damn
Closest thing of a friend for me and husbands relationship would younger female friend to share.
I don’t like so much man on man stuff, neither does he. I don’t mind nice women.

Hope you all got together before the quarantine started.

Right now we don’t even let the cat go outside.
Probably having the strictest hygiene measures in the neighbourhood. Everything, from food to online orders go through cleansing we could open a hospital here if needed  No germs are welcome.

Yes. If both people are mature enough to keep it at that and know where the boundaries are.
Can't tell if the people saying 'no' are deluded, terribly old-fashioned or just from a very different culture than me.

Being of college age in western europe, guys and girls being friends is entirely commonplace and usually works just fine.
Lol trust is the fundamental of a relationship so I have to trust until proven otherwise.

The so-called "friendzone" is a mythological place that the angels of machismo built on the tears shed by all the despised men in the world.

turn the question on its head and see if it still looks worth taking seriously:

can gay men/women have genuine, functioning friendships with people of the same gender? surely no one in this day and age seriously thinks that the answer to this is 'no'. if they do, they should probably make some more gay acquaintances.

i'm going to let y'all in on a little secret: believe it or not, there are actually a fair few women out there in the world that i'm not interested in shagging. yeah, crazy, i know. and while i struggle to believe it, some of those women might not be interested in shagging me either (not entirely sold on this one, tho). even crazier, some of those women are still interesting people, the kind of people that one could have a good friendship with. mind blown.

another crazy secret: it's possible for some people to have friends that you think are attractive too. there's this magical drug called 'social intelligence' that allows people to discern pretty well when sex/romance is off the table in a particular relation. some of these people manage to still maintain a solid friendship without making a terrible fuzz about it. maybe not the situation you'd want with a best friend for life, but there are more kinds of friendship than that.
