Haas Pulls Out + New Rule Should Be Applied

A few moments ago Haas announced that he will not be playing Federer in the fourth round of Wimbledon due to a stomach-injury he got whilst playing Tursunov...

In his match against Tursunov he took pills to lighten the pain but apparently this only made it worse...

I think it would be beter for tennis if now they gave Federer the choice... Play directly in the quarters or play Tursunov to give him some more matchplay. I don't think this would be 100% in favor for Federer saying I'll go to the quarters. No pro likes to advance a round without playing...

This would be beneficial to tennis and in my opinion only pleasant for Tursunov, he can play another round and could really challenge fed, and Federer as well, he gets more experience in the tournament... Otherwise people can say, like Mauresmo in the Aussie open last year, he got lucky this one...

What do you guys think?

Welcome to the real world.

Why give a guy who lost fair and square and give him another chance? Federer is just lucky, the tournament doesnt care about his match play.

They don't risk an injury, they don't have to face the possibility of losing, and they have extra days to rest.
I'm sure pros are GLAD to advance to the next round in the middle of a tourney without playing.

First of all this decision shouldn´t be in Fed´s hands because he´ll obviously take the free pass to the QF. Who wouldn´t? As much I would love to see them put Tursunov in Haas´s place it´s not fair because he lost fair and square. Whatr if Tursunov had won? That would really cause problems. We all know how the round robin format failed. The rules are fine the way they are, just luck of the draw. I just don´t wanna hear Fedfans complain about Nadal having an easy draw when Fed plays Gabahvili, Del Potro, a finished Safin and no one into the QF´s.

You always hear pros saying it's good to have some matches under their belt before the real thing begins...

Ofcourse he will probably chose to go straight to the quarters... But there is a chance he will choose to play. Otherwise he has 4 days without playing and if he wins it, people will say he won it with only playing 6 matches...

The only bad thing for Federer is that his 4th round match will not count for his grass streak but the most important thing is that he advances. He was lucky that Haas was in the same part of the draw.

I think the rules are fair the way they are...

It's an unfortunate situation, and kind of sucks for all involved. Haas the most of course. But Federer too, as he doesn't get that extra match-play. There's almost no chance he loses to Haas, and that match gives him some extra time to refine.

However, the point of the rule is that Federer beat his 3rd round opponent, a tough Safin. Turs lost to his 3rd round opponent. How outrageous would it be if Turs gets rewarded for losing to his 3R opponent by playing Federer, and by some freak incident somehow advances to the quarter-finals?

Clearly, of the two, Federer has the most title to advance to the quarter-finals.

The Fed wants #5 in a row. Even though he is a gentleman on and off the court--he would not opt to play Tursonov. Tursonov is a dangerous player with talent. He is like Safin--a head case with skills to boot. No pro would take the risk of a loss and losing a slam just to be gracious and kind.

I do applaud your thinking outside of the box though...

Man, this sucks.I wanted to see Fed in action tomorrow.Believe me, i think Fed would rather play then get a bye.He needs to be on court to get some rhythm. He will now have to practice more to get ready for the winner of Tip vs Ferrero.I rather he play Tursunov and Tursunov would not upset Fed on grass, dream on Fed haters!!!!!!!

Fed would have beaten Haas in 3 anyway.

This is karma for last year when Fed got a miserable draw and had to beat every decent grass court player in the draw.

Very interesting point. Does this count in the streak? Federer wins the match (by default) in a grass court tournament. If Haas played 1 point, then defaulted, that would count. I say this counts.

I agree, I don't see why Federer would want to add unnecessary risk to getting to his 5th Wimbledon title.

nobody likes to see a walkover or a default . . . but that's part of the game. it can happen to anyone and at any tournament. just so happens that it happened today and fed was the beneficiary. so now we gotta make a big deal about it and come up with a new rule?? come on, boys and girls!

It doesn't matter what one does, cause there is no pleasing. If Federer won the French and it wasn't against Nadal, people would have something to say. If Henin kept on playing, she could have said that Mauresomo won, because she was ill. Graf won the French open with an aging sportsbody, defeating the top 3 in the world and it still wasn't enough to shut people up.

Tursunov cetaintly is not a player you can measure Roger's greatness to. Sport is sport, those who play play, those who can't don't. Those who play win, those who don't play, don't win.

lol @ poor andy having to play roger again. There really is no one that could possibly beat him in his side of the draw. Haas was the only one that had ANY shot. At least some on the other side possess a minute chance...

Not the first time nor will it be the last someone's gotten a walkover in a GS. And to think that Roger would rather play a match then take the walk over is laughable.

Some people are going to make a big deal out of it, because Federer is in the Quarterfinals. And their favorite players are still in the 3rd Round with a lot of rain delays in the forecast. ;)

Haas and Roddick combined will be a very good player to challenge Fed.
but then they combined still lack the good footwork.

What a garbage idea. Who would choose extra exertion, the potential to lose, potential injury, etc, over a free pass to the qfs? Federer would never choose an extra match, and why should a guy who lost be allowed back in the draw? Stupid.
