A Haas-Nadal matchup sucks. I like Haas but he has nothing in his game that worries Nadal, it is a joke matchup, why would I want to watch a boring rout for Nadal against an incredably easy opponent for him to play. Atleast Davydenko would have given Nadal a decent match, I am sure of that, probably still would have lost but a match worth watching. Haas-Nadal is worth going to the fridge for while it is on since it will be an ugly rout for Nadal.
I hope you're kidding, right? Haas is one the best all-court players on tour and, in my opinion, has the best one-handed backhand, bar none. He will definitely give Nadal plenty to think about.

Can you believe ESPN? They were showing the two women's QF's on tape delay while this great men's 5-set QF was being played live!

Now that they have time before the Nadal-Gonzo match, what do they do? Replay the women's matches again that we just got done watching instead of showing us some of the Haas-Davydenko match!!! What is wrong with ESPN?????

I know. This is ridiculous. I usually don't have a problem with their coverage, but this AO has been terrible.

I agree, Haas will get rolled by Nadal assuming Nads beats Gonzo in the quarters. That heavy ball to the Haas forehand or backhand is going break down Tommy pretty quickly. He doesn't have the kind of firepower to really take it to Rafa, Davydenko versus Nadal would have been a much better battle. Nadal is 4 sets to zero over Haas on the hard stuff, this court favors Rafa even more compared to the ones the previous matches were played on.

Haas started out very slow against Nadal in their only meeting but he was catching and Nadal struggled to win the second set. If Haas brings that same mentality that he did in that second set it will be a close match. That's if Nadal gets through Gonzo today.

They did show the final moments of the match starting at 30-15 Haas serving for the match - but ofcourse ESPN's coverage sucks Mt Everest through a McDonlad's straw - I hope and pray they stop buying rights and TTC gets all the GS coverage!

You know what? In the week and a half of coverage, ESPN in all the many hours of broadcasting they have shown of the AO, NOT ONCE did they show any part of any Haas' nor Davydenko's matches! (except the last 3 points) And the tournament is almost over!

It's ridiculous! I mean Davydenko is the #3 seed and Haas is the #12 seed! They never even planned nor scheduled to show their QF match at all! They must have known it'll probably be a close and exciting match given their last QF encounter at the US Open just a few short months ago (which also went 5 sets), and Haas did beat Federer the last time he made it to the AO semis in '02.

It's a men's QF match, for chri*sakes, how can they NOT show it? What possible excuse could they have?

I think Nikolay Davydenko lost because he wore a hat and a necklace. No matter how you analyse his game, if he wears a hat and jewellery, then he will lose

You didn't even watch the match at all and you're just ********ting!
For the record Davydenko only wore a hat, while he was winning till the end of the 3rd, but took it off in the last 2. Your stupid and bad attempt be funny is just embarrassing and make you look like a fool.
Why not say that Haas won because he had the hat on the whole match while Davydenko didn't?!

A response from ESPN's offices in Bristol, CT:

Our research indicates that the demographics skew in favor of:
Americans like Serena Willams,
Americans with Russian names like Sharapova who play to the teen and female market,
Federer and Nadal (even though they are foreign, their rankings are high), Hingis and Clijsters (we chose to tape delay this one and not show Haas/Davydenko 'cause Hingis and Clijsters are more familiar names that do not sound quite as scary),
James Blake ('cause he's cool and he's from a few hours down the road....and our program director's brother-in-law is a card-carrying member of the J-Block).

We regret that ESPN and ESPN2 have a scientifically predetermined number of hours dedicated to tennis coverage. Sumo rodeo, the cheerleading finals, and the Scripps-Howard national spelling bee await.

quit hating on tommy, especially newbiett. he played great and doesn´t deserve all that. and those alleged fake medical timeouts are very popular among the players, nadal took one also against gonzo, nothing new or disgraceful about it. could it be that there are still hard feelings about ginepri´s loss at the us open last year? ;)

i thought davydenko would pull out that match, especially after how he took the 2nd and 3rd sets, but then i thought, if say nadal lost, then potentially there could be a federer-davydenko final? BORING!!!!

now at least, haas has a day to rest, can beat gonzo, and a federer-haas final could be good

davydenko, sure he pushed federer to like 4 tight sets, or was it 5 sets, at last year's AO, but he has never beaten federer

haas, i dont know overall records, but he went 5 sets with federer at last year's AO, and also beat him in kooyong, before last year's AO...

My Lord this got me pissed off when I found out the play was taped and not live. I thought that they would just show the Sharapova match and then the Haas Davy match on a slight delay and was ok with that. But no they show the Fing Clisters match. Did they even play the match after the Clisters Match? ESPN blows big time. Anyway I watched the whole Haas match on a livestream anyway and it was better anyway then on TV because I got to see all of Haas' hilarious antics. I might just watch everything on my PC now because Espn SUCKS.

Nope, ESPN showed NONE of the Haas-Davydenko match at all except the last 3 points and that was only because when they came back on the air at 12:30am PST, the match was still going on in the last game or else they wouldn't have shown any of it at all.

Get this, they show the two women's QF matches on tape all the while this amazing, hard-fought, close 5 set men's QF match was being played live, and then when they get done showing the two women's matches on tape, instead of switching over to the live action that's going on, they GO OFF THE AIR instead! Then they come back a half hour later when the Nadal-Gonzo QF match is scheduled only to catch the last 3 points of the Haas-Davydenko match! Why couldn't they have just stayed on for that half hour and at least shown us most of that 5th set??????? Would it have killed them to stay on for that half hour between the end of the evening slot and before the after midnight slot???? What the heck is wrong with ESPN???? Somebody please tell me!!!

OK, can you tell I'm a bit upset about this? ;)

how many hours of live tennis do you get to watch in the states at all (concerning the aussie open)? I thought I had to envy you for espn and the tennis channel? :-)

I cant believe they only showed the last 3 points, that is horrible. Freakin unbelievable. I know how you feel man, I took vacation all last week just to watch the Open expecting to see some decent coverage but it completely sucked.
