Had my first tennis lesson this morning

I scheduled a one hour lesson with a local teaching pro. My wife and two sons (11 & 5) joined me. What was cool was that we had our lesson at the Kinder Family Tennis Venter in Mason, Ohio (facility for Western & Southern Open).

Our teacher Cathy was great!! I learned how to hit a proper forehand, and tried to make sure my follow thru was perfect, and how to hit a two-handed backhand. The drills we ran were challenging yet fun!! Cathy did a great job with my sons.

I didn't really have any expectations but I walked away extremely happy with how my first ever lesson went. My 11 year old didn't want to go but on the drive home he said he was glad he went. Success!!

I hope to have a lesson every other week. It's just too expensive to do it weekly but I really want to push myself and get up to speed as quickly as possible, since I want to join a local team asap.

I believe my instructor is associated with the tennis center, and I can see why. She was detailed enough with me (which I wanted) but cut the boys enough slack so they felt great about their play afterward.

That is great. If you are lucky, your kids will stick with it. Unlike most other sports, tennis is something you can do together your whole life.

Agreed! This was the first thing we've done as a family in a long time! I am looking forward to improving where I can join a local team and hit with other adults. My current playing partners are my two sons!

If you want to play with other adults ASAP, the secret is to quickly develop a dinky serve. It will open the doors for you. If you follow the usual teaching progressions, especially with only once-a-week lessons, it will take a long time to fit into any group.

I started with a dinky serve, and was immediately invited into 3.0 or less doubles with elderly folks, and was much in demand.

The usual trap for beginners is that no one wants to play singles with them till they are any good, as even a 3.0 player gets irritated if his partner cannot rally the ball consistently (when he himself can't). So it becomes a chicken-and-egg situation and people quit out of frustration, particularly men, who tend to be impatient. But there are some really bad people playing doubles for ever, and all they want is someone who can get a serve in - speed/spin does not matter.

I used these people as a ladder and look where I am today (not much higher up :)).

I don't think tennis is a solution, I think you might have other problems....

I'm not using tennis as some type of fix, nor is there any problem that needs to be dealt with.

Please keep your misinformed, idiotic thoughts to yourself.

OP, ignore ATP100; it's nothing personal. Read some of his other posts, and you'll see what I'm talking about and get a laugh to boot. Enjoy tennis; it's a sport for a lifetime.
