3. Colonization

This had me thinking. Did colonialism begin with the British and their rationalizations for it, or did the Spanish and Portuguese initiate modern colonialism? Were the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans colonialists?

I recently learned about how capitalism was largely born in Amsterdam around 1600 with merchants finding a way to fund building ships and expeditions to acquire spices and other resources from the East Indies. This lead to the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and then the British East India Company (EIC) followed their model.

The slave trade was rampant in Europe and North Africa in the 16th and 17th centuries (and long before). The Ottomans were trading in slaves from the Balkan/Black Sea regions as well as Sub-Saharan Africa. They cut off those routes from European powers, so the Spanish and Portuguese turned to West Africa for slaves to work in the Americas. The British then used this slave network for their American colonies.

British colonialism in Ireland, and the opium trade (tea’s not free) and how it adversely affected India and China is still an issue in these countries, but I need to end this tangent.

1. The U.S. last held the World Cup in 1994 during more friendly and affordable times for World Cup fans. (One of my favorite World Cup moments was getting too drunk at the Bleeding Horse (a James Joyce haunt) in Dublin with several Irish university film students and theater actresses when Ireland beat Italy in 1994. That was a huge win for Ireland at the time, and Dublin went crazy.)
