Hand & Wrist Pain

Hi All -

New here! Have been an avid tennis player most of my life. Consistently playing around the 3.5 > 4.0 level. I have recently jumped back into paying consistently, twice a week for past few months using my old Wilson K factor Pro Open (11.3 Oz strung). I first got this racket way back in highschool (Upgrade from KSurge which was a much lighter racquet, around 10.4 Oz strung).

I remember years ago when I switched to the KFactor Pro Open I started to get wrist pain so to avoid, I just stuck with my KSurge and all was well. Years later through college I played much less frequently and found the KFactor to be just fine.

Fast forward to today...back at it and for about the last month or so, my hand and wrist have been stiff and finding pain when playing (thought it usually goes away once I get really warm and loose). Though, after and next day and so on, I have that pain in my hand/wrist. Has been this way for about a month now. I ice and rest it, wrap it, all the above and seems to be staying the same. The ulnar side (pinky) has pain, but not too bad...but the more aggravating area is on the top of my hand under my index finger, right in the middle between the knuckle and my wrist. The area that gets tight when you use a knife to cut something (to help reference where I am talking about).

I am 29 years old and in good shape and relatively strong, so I am not sure why this racquet seems to be causing pain for me, thought it certainly seems to be the common denominator when looking at history for me.

So really have a coupe questions:

1) Do we think the culprit is the racquet? The weight? The balance? I prefer this weight for power and feel so really dont want to go back to a light one.
2) What do we think causes the pain on back of my hand (noted above)? I would think it comes from strain and pressure from my grip, particularly how I am squeezing the grip with my index finger I presume...

Curious to hear thoughts!

What string and tension are you using? How long have you had the string job in terms of playing hours on court?

Poly strings go dead within 8-15 hours (shorter for stiffer poly) and cause pain and injury after that. If you don’t break it within that time frame, you are supposed to cut them out when control becomes erratic or at first signs of tightness/pain in your wrist/elbow.

Also, poly strung too high above 50 lbs can cause soreness and injury as it is very stiff compared to soft strings like multi/gut. Even soft strings strung above 60-65 lbs can feel uncomfortable and cause pain to many players.

A stiffer racquet will exacerbate the effects from dead poly or strings that are strung too high.

These are a hybrid, Syntheic and natural gut. Have had these strings for about a month now. Think they are at 50 ish pounds...around there.

Classically light, head heavy sticks are bad for arms. I'm not familiar with the stats on your racquet. Doesn't seem to be the strings.

My wrist hurted yesterday when I was immitating my friend who doesn't wait with racquet in the most takeback position, before the ball bounces.
Normally if I do a fast shadow swing from there, I have no problems(and you can hear the "wooosh"), but if I copy him and take the racquet back and swing FW my wrist hurts.

Are you squeezing tightly on your grip? Or too often? Squeezing too much can result in GE. But it also can cause pain in the wrist & fingers. Most of the time, grip pressure should be only 2 or 3 out of 10. (The racket falls out of your hand with a pressure of 0).

You might consider 10-15 grams to your frame to see if that helps to subdue frame shock (if that is the problem).

Not a doctor but fwiw:

1. Gently and slowly Stretch your forearm muscles (find YouTube videos)
2. foam Flexbar strengthening exercises
3. Ibuprofen
4. Overall weight training and yoga will help ease stress on wrist ligaments
5. Contact ball OUT IN FRONT / take some lessons to make sure technique is sound
6. Don't use thick poly strung high and/or left in racquet for long time!
