Why Does Your Sandwich Come With a Pickle?
By Dylan Lehotsky

With any sandwich you buy in the United States you will receive an all too familiar side dish without any explanation. The pickle. But why? How did the pickle become such an iconic part of our deli experience?

Pickles have been around for thousands of years and were considered a delicacy as early as 2400 BC. The pickle became popular in the U.S. though when the first Jewish immigrants came to New York from eastern Europe. Famous for their unique combinations of meat, Jewish delis in the city used the pickle as a palate cleanser. The acidity allows you to experience the sharp contrast in flavors and more fully appreciate the taste of your sandwich. The specific deli that was first to place a pickle alongside a sandwich is unknown, but the practice quickly spread beyond Jewish delis.

Across the city of New York, the pickle’s popularity grew and by the 1930s entrepreneurs became pickle vendors across the Lower East Side. In fact, there were famous “Pickle Wars” that occurred between the vendors competing for a monopoly on the sour sensation. Today the pickle has even been given its own festival in New York that is celebrated in October.

Once the pickle became a staple in New York, the tradition of including the pickle with a deli sandwich grew in appeal and it quickly became a popular choice for an easy-to-prepare side dish across the U.S. In fact, the pickle is now the most commonly used side dish for a sandwich and the combination makes up the majority of all pickle consumption. It has become so standard that restaurants no longer list it on the menu. Originally a Jewish tradition, the pickle has grown into a deli staple that has made its way onto every sandwich plate across America.

Pickle is a cucumber only in the US. @Azure @Sentinel @Sunny Ali will tell you about all the other kinds of vegetables and fruits which can be pickled.

There is even Achari Kabab, which is not pickled kabab, but kabab marinated in pickle.
Wait, but we pickle all kinds of veggies in the US too. Cabbage, brussel sprouts, olives, mushrooms, and even some animals like herring. Do ewe ever go to the supermarket?

Had some Japanese pickles (oshinko) with lunch today, elegant little things made from daikon, burdock root, various other little veggies. Would NOT want them on a burger.

Another beautiful morning. Sureshs tagged me

Yes pickle has a different connotation in these parts. My favourite is the Avakaya or the Mango pickle. It's a summer routine at home. Fresh green raw mangoes are bought, washed, dried under the sun for a day. They are then cut into large pieces and mixed with mustard seed powder, salt, chilli powder, Fenugreek powder and gingelly oil in proper proportions and stored in dry ceramic or porcelain (hehehe) jars. They last until the next summer. In some households garlic may be used as well. Mango pickle on fresh rice is a favourite foodstuff. I also like curd rice with pickle. Yumm.

I also like the amla or gooseberry variety, scraped mango, slightly ripe mango, small cut mangoes etc etc. The varieties are enormous.

I don't consume Indian pickles anymore. Spices don't agree with me anymore.

I prefer the tamer Kimchi.

I don't believe that spices aid digestion and so on. It is just an excuse to consume something spicy, salty and oily. If it was the case, all people in Finland would have indigestion.

And I don't believe spices are "good" for hotter climates. Maybe more salt is needed due to perspiration, that is all. In fact, hot weather and spice makes for indigestion and burning.

The older I get, the less and less I like Indian food. The great taste invariably leads to gas, indigestion and morning download issues. Wife made very limited stuff for Diwali on Friday and we finished it yesterday. We don't get any Indian snacks from anywhere.

Yellow turmeric is very good for you though.

Yellow turmeric is very good for you though.

There are so many things that are good for you. And they need to be consumed regularly. If you make a list of all these things and consume them all at the required frequency to be effective, you will die very soon.
