These people are doing everything in their power to host the Olympics, and if they have a big thing like Wimbledon at their disposal to give them the edge of their competitors to be able to host the Olympics, they will use it. And yes, having Wimbledon in their back pocket did give them points that other countries needed to justify from not only building costs, but transportation etc. Also, since it happened straight after Wimbledon, it would be part of the grass season, and not just placed anywhere randomly on the calender to stick out like a sore thumb.

Regarding Brazil. While I feel they should have gone with clay, the only thing I can think is they are thinking it is happening before a Slam, and decided to cater towards that. Plus HCs are easier and cheaper to lay down...and in a country where there have been all kinds of politicial issues regarding the cost of hosting not only the Olympics but the World Cup, and I see them possibly penny pinching.

Any random tennis club manages to lay it down, I'm sure it cannot be a problem in this case. They're not trying to save money either, seriously, no way. They woulnd't build the football stadiums for the World Cup without a roof they won't be trying to save money on the courts' surface.

My point about Englad was when it comes to the "fairness" argument.

I expected clay, and I'm somewhat disappointed in the decision. However, it seems to me that the decision to use hard court was based on the time of the event being near the summer North American hard court season and the U.S. Open. One could make the point about the proximity of Roland Garros and Wimbledon and how players are forced to deal with the quick turnaround, but I think this situation is different, seeing as how the host nation is aware of the date and can then accordingly choose the most logical surface, whereas rearranging the whole of the ATP/WTA Tours would be a colossal undertaking.

Somebody said it earlier. Surface distribution around the tours is a mess, but that's an issue for another time, I think. As to the players abilities on whichever prospective surface, I think it's premature and meaningless to speculate on the form and possible winners of an event almost 2 years away. We all know anything can happen in tennis.

No way money came into it. They're spending tons of it to build these facilities. They surely could have cut expenses in a number of things before the surface if that was an issue. I mean, every tennis club can afford to have clay courts. It's surely no issue here.

It's on hc because the ITF wanted it so, period.

If that's the case then the reasoning is probably to have a better lead into the summer HC swing, which is a fair reason - if slightly disappointing.

It would of been nice to see the SA players really get up for this on their best surface.

Ah such a shame it isn't on grass. We already have so few grass tournaments and it would have only been fair to see another.

Where?

Info from 3 years back:

2012 Challengers Surfaces:

Outdoor Clay - 76
Outdoor Hard - 45
Indoor Hard - 22
Indoor Carpet - 4 (Worlfsburg, Kyoto, Eckental, Toyota)
Outdoor Grass - 2 (Nottingham, Nottingham 2)
Indoor Clay - 1 (Saint Brieuc)

It will be DecoTurf, the same surface as the North American summer season. Clay was not chosen because of the timing. It is just before the US open and I am assuming Canada and Cincinnati will be moved ahead of the Olympics. BTW Beijing 2008 was also DecoTurf.

I think it will always be on grass or HC now because of where the Olympics falls in the tennis calendar - after Wimbledon and before/during the North American hard court swing. May explain why it's only ever been once on clay - because it would only take one time for people to realise that you're asking people to go from grass to clay and then a week or so later to HC.

Don't think any pro would be real impressed by that.

Everyone seems to be getting their hopes up already for their favourites :D
2004, 2008 and 2012 are not the same as 2016. I know who I would like to see win, but something is telling me we are due a surprise winner...

What are Fed doing among individual gold medal winners?!
Fed's medal is worth only half the value of the individual gold medal!

So the medal of an Olympic football winner is worth 1/11th of Nadal's or Usain Bolt's?

Roger and Stan both won medals which are identical to every one else's. :)

I voted yes, not because it's the "most fairer" surface, but because it is the only sensible one because of the timing. It will be between Cinci and the USO - how many players would be ok with switching to clay in the middle of a hard court season and just before a hard court slam?

This is why it will be on HC. That said, I would've liked to see it be played on clay.

Apparently Brasil upgraded the clay courts at Racing Club at the same time as they made the preliminary decision to go with hard courts because tennis in Brasil thought it best for the future of their sport in a global tennis world dominated by hardcourts. So they've done well out of the Olympics.

So is an Olympic medal worth three fifths of a Slam given that it is three sets? And that's before we get to the small field and fewer rounds, so half of a Slam sounds generous?

So you're saying that a gold medalist football player has 1/11th of the merits that a gold medalist darts player have?

Stop reaching  You know she's right. When evaluating an olympic career, all medals are the same of course, but since we're comparing singles achievements, Federer's and Nadal's olympic medals are not the same.

Federer's olympic medal counts towards his doubles achievements and doubles career. Otherwise we should be labelling singles and doubles slams alltogether and counting them all the same. But that's not the case.

Or are you trying to tell me Murray's silver olympic medal in doubles is worth more than Djokovic's bronze medal in singles? Nadal has a career golden slam and Federer does not.

Nice try there

You are right, but she makes a different argument that makes no sense.

So you consider Nole to be a lesser player than he is just because he doesn't have an Olympic gold medal?!

It's an achievement Novak is yet to win, just like Rome and MC are achievements Federer is yet to win.

Federer > Nadal > Djokovic > Murray and OG doesn't change that, but winning it couldn't hurt. :)

It's also an achievement that only comes around every four years. I doubt he's losing any sleep over it.

It's still an Olympic Gold. :)

Does it matter than Fed/Djoker have never won the (singles) OG?
Not really.

But do I want Fed to win it?
Of course.

It's a shame you weren't thinking along those lines when you posted those pictures of Fedal and Murray holding their gold medals.

Obvious troll was obvious. :)

But the OG is just gravy on a great career.
Kind of like DC.
