Who is the greatest player ever on Hardcourts? My vote goes to Federer.
Lendl would be a good choice also.
Even McEnroe or Sampras
Just looking at the four years 2004-2007, Federer won 7 out of the 8 hardcourt Grand Slams (including 4 straight US Opens). He reached the semifinal of the one he didn't win, losing that epic five-setter with Safin, having had match points. In those four years, there were 20 hardcourt Masters Series events. Out of those 20, Federer reached the final of 14, winning 12 of them. Out of those 4 Masters Cups, Federer reached the final of all 4, winning 3 and losing the other in five sets. In those four years, he also won another 9 smaller hardcourt events.
Hard to argue with Roger Federer being the greatest hardcourter of all-time.
He also has the longest winning streak on hard courts. So yeah. Fed is easily the GOAT on hardcourts.
In my opinion it's Federer and I don't think he is done winning hardcourt slams yet even though he'll have a hard time doing that with Novak becoming a great force on that surface.
Great post, yeah it's hard to beat those numbers.
Yep, Feds got this one as well.
Most hardcourt majors:
Lendl 5(& AO was on grass during his prime)
Not many hardcourts before the 1980s.
2004-2007 is not all-time. So your post proves only that he is the GO2004-2007.
It is a pity he wasn't playing in Grand Slams when he was 10 years old.
His performance in those 4 years shows him to be the most dominant and greatest hardcourter ever.
One could also argue Federer's competition was not as great as some other times and I would agree with this. I will not argue for A GOAT for the same reasons as I always have for there not being a GOAT in anything tennis related.
I say Lendl because I think if the Aussie had been played on hardcourts at the time he would have the most hardcourt major wins...Fed is an extremely close second though
Hard to choose one out of these 3
I have no problems with Fed. And, if we are just going to look at hardcourt major wins, then it has to be Fed or Sampras.
But, I'm going to go with Lendl by a hair. As others have said, the AO was played on grass at the beginning of Lendly's career, yet he still has 5 hard court slams, made 8 consecutive US open finals, and has a bunch of other semis at hardcourt Slams. He has five year end championships (though I'm assuming most were on carpet, rather than indoor hardcourt), and he has around 7-9 (I went through his Wikipedia tourney list pretty quickly) hardcourt Masters equivalents including 2 or 3 Miami titles (then Ft. Myers and/or Boca West), Cincinatti, 5 Toronto/Montreal titles, as well as multiple Sydney Indoor titles (which used to be a big event with a stocked field and was actually hardcourt, not indoor carpet).
Again, Fed's a fine choice, but I'd wait until his career is over to do a real comparison.
Lendl was very impressive, I agree
Hardcourt GOAT as a kid:
Is that your son?
Sorry but some of your numbers are a little wrong, of the 20 hardcourt MS between 2004-2007 Federer entered 17, made 12 finals and won 10, he also had an overall hardcourt record during that period of 199-13, including a 56 and a 35 match winning streak during that period. In fact over 2005 and 2006 he went 109-3 that's winning 97.3% of matches played. Btw Masters cup is not played on hardcourts.
Yes sir, but don't forget about Connors
Fed is the luxilon string goat.
Yeah, dunno where I was pulling that 14 from. I thought the Masters Cup was now played on hardcourt?
It changes from year to year. In 2005 it was carpet, which is why Federer went 50-1 on hardcourts that year, in other years it's been hard court.
other than federer, connors is up there with 12 straight years reaching uso semis (5 wins) and also lendl with 8 straight years to USO final (3 wins). cant think of any others with that kind of consistancy
