Has Anyone Ever Died Playing 8.0 Mixed?

I am not sure people noticed this, given the number of subsequent posts that talked about your "4.5 partner". I have played quite a bit of 8.0 mixed and even our pairs that were made up of two low 4.0 players did poorly. I don't think two 3.5 players will have a very good record at all. However, that doesn't mean you will not enjoy it; I found USTA mixed to be one of the most sociable, fun leagues I have played.

Good points, amarone.

Well, I got a chance to play 7.5 combo, so I'm going to sign on. Which means I probably won't pursue the 8.0 mixed thing because 4 teams would be too much, or maybe just tell the guy I could only play a couple of matches.

And yeah, I think he might have a hard time finding 4.5 players this time of year. A lot of guys who play mixed already have teams. Then again, maybe he'll luck into a merger. We shall see . . .

not a death...merely a concussion

There was a USTA 8.0 Mixed match played here in NC a couple weeks ago. Both guys were 4.0's. They got into an argument during the match and at some point one guy hit the other in the head with a tennis racquet. The offender received a 4 year suspension from USTA and the victim received 4 years of probation for "provoking" the incident. It seems that the victim's wife is an attorney so...stay tuned.

Hmm. Got another e-mail from the captain. He has a decent size group, but is a bit short on women. He seems to have a collection of 4.0 and 3.5 men who've been around the block a few times.

I think I'll see if Ms. Slice and Dice wants to join the team with me. Could get interesting . . . .

I thought I died once playing regular 4.0 doubles. One guy had a monster serve, and one of them hit just long, bounced and struck me in absolutely the worst place a guy can be hit. When I finally caught my breath, I spent the next 3 games as an alto soprano instead of my usual bass baritone. Haven't fathered any children since, either. :-(

Xisbum, forgive me for laughing but this is the funiest/worst story I've heard. On second though, I just reread it and I though you had a direct hit from the serve; not after a bounce. Whew.

I'm a woman so I think it's ok for me to say this. I notice way more cheating going on in women's tennis then men's, especially at the 4.0 and below levels. I don't know why it is but that's my experience. I think as you move up in the levels it's not as bad, playing at 4.5 I don't really experience it too much, there's one or two players notorious for it though.

I totally agree with you! Women are Hookers! ;)

OK, I went to 8.0 mixed practice today.

I have to say, it was a lot of fun. I got better at returning those huge serves (I am so glad I've been working on a slice/block return, 'cause I needed it). Everyone was very nice.

Trouble is, this team is very short on women. If I join, I would have to play a ton of matches. And I would lose them all by a lot, as several of these guys are returning to tennis after long layoffs and don't know how to play doubles. There were two computer-rated 4.0s, so maybe I'd try to partner with them. On Court One. :gulp:

I like the captain and would hate to bail on him, so I'll probably do it.

If you don't hear from me after one of those 8.0 matches, check the local emergency room. :)
