Has anyone experimented with pickleball paddle polarity?

If I get a spinny paddle and polarize it, will that improve topspin?

Intuitively, I'd think yes, but contrary to tennis, apperantly a thicker paddle is better for control and a thinner one is more powerful.

I don’t think so … with current paddles now top tier spin is primarily coming from surface (carbon or kevlar with a top textured layer created with peel ply). You don’t have tennis racquet dynamics like RA, flex, recoil weight, strings, etc. It’s also a 16” lever, not 27”.

They are selling .5 oz and 1 oz replacement butt caps (Slyce) so you can add mass at handle, but the idea there has mainly been about adding weight with minimum increase to swing weight. Also can changed balance point, heavier paddle but more head light. The caps aren’t cheap … I think tennis players in the past just stuffed blu tack putty in the handle. Wrapping handle with lead under overgrip and applying equal amount to head would be a cheap test, try it and let us know how it worked.

I can offer anecdotal evidence. I have one of the highest spin paddles ... the Spartus Apollo. I hit it stock weight at 8 oz, excellent spin. I liked the balance of the paddle, but wanted more static weight/plow through. I had some room with the low Apollo stock 108 swing weight to bump up swing weight, so I ended up at 8.6 oz. Coincidentally… I guess polarized because .3 oz at handle (Wilson Comfort Air replacement grip + overgrip), and .3 oz at head (3g at 4, 8 and 12). Spin is about the same as stock 8 oz spin, but paddle is even more stable and hands still fast enough at kitchen. Surprised I like 8.6 oz, generally don’t like to go past 8.4ish oz. But, first standard shape paddle and starting 108 swing weight no doubt plays into it. That said, I think the top paddle reviewers dismiss static weight too much. We have lots of quick hand/paddle movements/reflexes before we swing sometimes.

Good point with the levers.
I have jsut been trying to maximize the tennisness of my pb game. I just play recreationally some times, so its more for fun. I know they are having grit caps etc for paddles, and they degrade over them. So i was thinking of a way around it.

Ohh, I wasn't aware of the butt caps. I had crbn 1? (the legal one). I just put around 6 grams at the top. Mostly because it was a little light to start with. I will play around a little more and see what happens

I played tennis on pb court for first six months … definitely more fun. The year that followed that six months has been begrudgingly deprogramming a lot of tennis. But the tennis topspin lob from the baseline lives on with the Apollo … it’s a kitchen dinking disrupter. :-D

I would invest in a mid ranged price paddle that is durable and usa approved. Would highly recommend The SLK Halo. Would be a good fit. I can also get you a free giftcard which will be added to your account 1 week after order. You will also get 10-15% off of your purchase.

I do not condone pickleball.

But I can confirm that spin potential can be substantially enhanced by the addition of extra mass in the right places.

Would you say paddle mass or paddle swinger mass offer the most enhancement on topspin?

Followup question … where are the best places for paddle swinger mass additions? I mean for pickleball … not swinger dating.

Pickleball made my stomach flat … seems like I lost part of my forehand kinetic chain.

Polarizing post in a polarizing thread … next level baby

I think the T boost from regular play in front of spandex clad cougars might have cognitive side effects.

Idk the first question.

Based on tennis, I'd guess that given a specific paddle more weight at 12 an in the handle would increase the polarity, which would allow for more spin.

This is intuitive. One of the standard ways to give players more distance in their golf irons is to make the faces thinner. Less material = greater elasticity. Tennis is different because thickness there is merely the anchor for the hitting surface rather than the hitting surface itself.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Thanks.
