Has Federer given his fans so much heartbreak simply because he has been in so many big matches

Of course, Federer has lost several "big matches" (Grand Slam semifinals and finals) that seemed very winnable, but it also seems like this is because he has been in so many of these matches.

For example: the guy has played 17 more semifinals than Nadal and Sampras and 7 more finals than Nadal and 9 more finals than Sampras.

While Federer loses to Safin 9-7 in the fifth set of an Australian Open semifianl, Sampras loses weekly to Kucera in the quarterfinal. While Federer gets tight and loses to Raonic in a Wimbledon semifinal, Sampras loses in the 2nd round to an unknown. While Federer loses a heartbreaker to Del Potro in a US Open final, Sampras chokes and loses to Korda in the 4th round of the 1997 US Open.

Nope. More to cheer about over the course of a career than anyone else, ever. And from the look of it, plenty still in the tank. We've been absolutely spoiled.

Federer also won 17 Slams and broke many other records so I wouldn't look much at those several heartbreaks if I were his longtime fan.

No, the quarter-final against Cilic has proven otherwise, he could've easily given up and said screw this and retire, in fact we've been spoiled and his mental strength is severely underrated here. He came back from injury, with time off and still managed to make the semi-finals which in fact he should've closed out in 4 sets. He still wants to play and as long as he does people will still watch him even if he ends up on the losing side of the match.

This. OP you need to get a grip mate. You're like a fat lad sat there with chocolate all over his face, crying his eyes out because he's not getting that 18th desert. HELLO - Roger has won 17 slams. Seventeen! More than anyone else in the universe!

I appreciate OP's sentiment. Don't think it's about just this tournament. Point's strong: you play at the top for the longest time, with the most pressure, the most at stake, there will be many more opportunities to fall.

Definitely been a trove of glory, but it's a double-edged sword. Just about anyone in the tennis world would still take his career, though.

Wouldn't say heartbreak.

I've found more of a disbelief in some of his defeats in big matches when he has had the match on his racquet. The W 2014 defeat was a real stinger. Thought he had that match and poof Djokovic nicked it at the end. Only time I've used expletives after a match!

There seems to be a natural affection towards Federer. Handles victory and defeat with good grace.
