Has Murray surpassed Vilas and Courier in greatness?

Vilas:4 majors, 4 runners up, 1 tour final and a bunch of other records. Don't know how many masters.

I think he is at least equal due to all the major finals he has reached,

Courier's dominance is underrated absolutely vicious 1991-92, although if this was that time now I could only imagine the nonsense people would come out with, didn't beat Sampras on he way to his wins, Edberg was on his way out, Amos Mansdorf? etc.

Vilas was also very dominant but he played in a time when 70% of the tour was clay and you could just play clay events of any quality throughout the year, hence his unbeatable winning record and high title count. His Australian Open titles should be taken with a pinch of salt but his US Open is complete boss.

murray definitely has a better body of work than courier not even close but like other posters have said if you took couriers peak of his best 24 months its better than murrays

Courier was a solid and deserved number 1 for a good period and clearly the best player in the world until Petros started coming into his own period of domination. Murray has never been #1 or dominant for any length of time.

Courier, no. Vilas, it's maybe up for debate, but I'd probably still go with no. Murray never dominated anything the way Vilas dominated clay. I tend not to judge people from yesteryear against people from today based on number of titles/finals reached because it used to be that much harder to succeed across all surfaces. For Vilas, a dyed in the wool clay courter, to have achieved as much as he did on other surfaces is pretty remarkable.

Slam: Murray > Courier and Vilas because W & USO weigh a ton, while
- the 2 Aus won Vilas were comparable to two M500 and
- the 2 Aus won Jim not worth the other 3 .

Other titles:
- Vilas also won a dozen Master1000 comparable ( Milan , Rotterdam , 3 Washington, Rome , Hamburg , 3 Louisville , 2 Canada , ... + ATP Finals 1974) .
- Courier .. outdistanced

- the 2 Aus won Vilas were comparable to two M500 and
- the 2 Aus won Jim not worth the other 3 .

courier defended his slam on two different surface , even Rafa and Agassi type ATG failed to do this. I know consistency wise he was good for only 3 to 4 years but in those years he was very good.
Not taking anything from Vilas but 3/4 majors he won when big players didn't participated, something that never happened to Courier or Murray.

I also believe that technically Courier was the best 3 players ( 1 Courier , 2 Murray , 3 Vilas ) .

But I think it did not last long and then won well.

However they are close and it's good your rankings .

Courier had terrible longevity but at his peak he was better than Murray. He still has an extra slam and year at #1 over Murray so it depends how highly you value Murray's consistency. I give the nod to the time at #1 so far.
