Has your opinion of Fed changed after today ?

I respect that he continues to play but its obviously (though he won't say it) he HAS to continue to play because of Nadal reaching or surpassing his slam count.

But today shows who Fed has always been. A guy who folds like a cheap suit in deciding sets under pressure

Not reeeeeeeeeally. We all know he's a terrific tennis player, that much was never in doubt. My concern was could he live with the best players in the world over 5 sets anymore, and I didn't see much today to suggest that he could. Djokovic gifted him the 4th set, and he was only the most minor of threats for a (mentally) ailing Novak in the 5th.

As much as ı dont like him. I never question his talent or him being a great player. My opinion still not changed about him ı still believe he dominated a WEAK era and as result he isnt clutch player in epic matches by any means.

Yes it has. I once thought that he was the goat. This epic match makes him ultra goat in my book.

Nole's choking is what made the match "epic" This should have been a short 2 hour some minute match if Nole wouldn't have hit so many senseless errors on big points

Yes my opinion changed. It makes me respect the guy even more for making a GS final at 33 and managing to push it as far as he did. Joker played better than him the entire match and it should have been over in three, let alone five. I'm amazed Fed managed to force a fifth at all, let alone almost win it. Congrats to joker, he deserved it.

Nole CHOKED. Bottom line. He choked in the first set tiebreak and he choked again up 5-3 serving for the match.

Again.. This should have been a straight set beatdown but Nole's stupid error sprays made it go 5

You are wrong.

It was quite obvious to the viewer and also from Fed's interview that he changed strategy in the fourth set. Clearly Fed was the better player from 1-3 down in the 4th.

Fed was insane in the 3 rd set serve. But for the botched FH in the tiebreak the 3rd was his. the first set was Novak's though.

Novak said in his post match that this was the cleanest grand slam final he has played. It took an enormous effort to beat a not at peak Federer.

It is a shame that you dont appreciate the effort a 32 year old is showing at a major final against the world number one.

Nope. Federer will never win another slam or beat Djokovic or Nadal ever again in a best of 5. He is finished.

He had a golden opportunity and he blew it.

Federer seriously needs to retire.

I'll give him till this fall at the USO (33 years of age) to prove he's capable of one more, provided they speed it (courts) up. 100 degress is still bearable for him but I'm not sure how he can cope with 110 degrees in Melbourne. The game is still there but can he go the distance for the win in a 5-setter?

Yeah, everybody who lost at this W, should retire.

Only Djokovic as allowed to remain on the tour :)

Seriously what's the point of playing? He has lost all the big finals he has been in this year.

He plays because he loves tennis. I love tennis and even if I am losing to someone, I still enjoy the match rather than the result. I know that it is harder at the professional level but Federer himself said in the post-match ceremony that he had fun in the match and was surprised to take it to a fifth set. Roger is just an amazing athlete and man. He inspires me like no other and I am super proud of his effort and if he is having fun then who cares if he loses.

Fed has won 17 majors. As a fan, in the big scheme of things, I am happy for what he did today.

It is insane to expect an almost 33 year old guy to tough it out with a 27 year old guy in his peak.

To be honest, I think that this is a nice swan song for him. Even though he didn't win.

I would be surprised if he comes as close to winning another slam title. It's nice to see that he went out fighting the way he did, but I don't see his baseline game being enough after seeing him against Stan and Novak on grass.

I find it so hard to believe that he was just playing for fun given that he turned on the waterworks yet again. If he really were just playing for fun (aka not worrying too much about the result), there would be absolutely no reason to cry after extending a match that should have been a straight set cake walk.

He is human and come on man, you know the feeling of coming so close but failing in the end; it hurts in the moment but I am sure that he will get over it as he has proven in the past. The mind takes a while to process the emotions that are running through your body after a Wimbledon final like that, so there will be some signs such as a tear dripping down but he was composed and was a class act.

It cemented for me just how far he has fallen. I knew to some extent, but then I'd see him playing well and wonder if it wasn't just a stylistic thing. His forehand went from "lights out" to players challenging Federer, daring him to hit a forehand winner on them.

HEs not playing for fun. Playing for fun is having your slam record safe and just playing to get out of the house and away from the annoying wife.

His slam record is in jeopardy and he KNOWS IT. So he is doing what he can to do win more to probably put it out of reach.

Don't believe everything a player says to the media for cripe sakes. Its called PR for a reason

But again, if he only cares about having fun, why is he breaking down to the point of crying? By definition, he cares a lot about the outcome if he had that during of an emotional response to the match. Rafa and Djokovic are humans too but I've never seen them cry after a loss no matter how close it was.

To be fair, I'm a bit biased because I hate Federer, but I think that his comments should be taken with a grain of salt. I think he was more trying to save face than telling 100% how he felt. I think he knows he blew a golden chance to win another Wimbledon and add to his slam count before he retires

Lolwut Djokovic has done it twice and Rafa can be seen almost on the verge (similar to Federer here, that was literally the only tear he shed in public) in AO 2011 and this year plus Wimbledon 2007 F (but that was not in public).

Also that comment by Roger has been made a while ago, not after this final. It has nothing to do with saving face.

Of course, he cares as he is a professional but I meant that he loves the sport more than the results and that is why he is playing. It was a response to the poster I quoted above. All the pros care and want to win but they are playing for love, well most of them; I'm sure other people get into tennis for money/fame but those people won't be too successful. I mean look at Rafa, Novak and Roger. They are so consistent for years and that is because they have unwavering discipline to eat clean, train hard and work out. If the rest of the tour worked as hard as them, there might have been more GS winners in the new generation of players.

Also, Novak cried after the olympics loss to Nadal in 08 and had a tear like Roger did here in the RG final this year. Nadal cried in the locker room for a while after the 2007 Wimbledon final and was misty eyed after the 2011 Wimby final. Anyways, they are all pretty upset after they lose but each of them is different and show it in different ways but we can't fault them for that.

Wow. This is truly one of the Greatest (quotes) Of All Time.

If we all follow this line of reasoning, then Nadal will be the only one who has a chance to win next yeear's French, because everyone who doesn't have a chance, which is every other tennis player on earth, should retire.

if Fed was not playing and Nadal got defeated early, Djokovic vs anyone in the final would probably be a very one sided match.

Replace Federer with Nadal or Murray today, Djokovic probably would still win. He was just too tough.

Exactly, I domt believe any other player would have even taken Novak to a 4th.

Novak's returns were godly. Anything other than an ace was returned with interest. He was killing Fed's 110 second serve. It had to be an on the spot first serve.

This was one of the best matches I've ever seen him play.

Keeping composed during the 5th and then going into GOD mode on his returns is what earned him the match.

Hats off to him.

No.

What can I say, F is one of the best tennis players ever. He gave a fierce fight today on Centre Court.

But it is a shame that many of his fans embarass him by expecting unrealistic things, he is no longer the same player he was a few years ago.

Can't a champion decline with grace for goodness sake, of do his fans always want more?
Some people just don't understand.

The question was about Federer and not his fans. at least you saved us from your one trick pony marketing rant whatever that means.

Damn fine final, and showing in general for the old man, whose record, achievements, and reputation were not in jeopardy in my book.

He probably should have kept some points shorter, charged net more, put more pressure on...but he also reeled off five straight games to win the fourth when down 2-5. It didn't help not making a first serve in the final game, when it helped carry him through much of it, especially in the clutch moments.

Another take on it: he inadvertently helped Djokovic's confidence, which may end up helping maintain his GS record, if that really means that much to him.
