Has your opinion of Fed changed after today ?

Well, its hard to tell. Djokovic played one of his best ever grass court matches of his career today... he seemed to be a robot literally out there, and this guy, being almost 33 y/o took this prime 3.0 Djokovic to a 5 setter. That's quite remarkable..

On the other side, Federer had his chances earlier in the 5th set when Djokovic was still confused, but as he always does, he tends to overestimate certain key moments of the matches.

Those 3 first service games by Nole in the 5th were the key, he should have gone all-in like if they were the last 3 games of his life, just like Nadal would have made... but he didn't. He let Djokovic find the rhythm again and when Roger was down 3-4 with the serve you could tell already the match was finally going to end in Djokovic's hands.

THAT was a big disappointment to me. I really had hopes he was going to change this tendency, specially considering this was HIS last chance... and he didn't.

I would have preferred to see him lose in 4 instead of letting the match escape like that after that remarkable escape.

No my opinion on Federer has not changed after today. Federer is at an age now that no matter what happens, he can't really lose and in the yes of some, he is immune to criticism.

If he had won Wimbledon - what an amazing performance for a 33 year old to have won a slam.

he loses a close final - what a very very credible performance by a 33 year old.

If he loses badly or exits early - he's 33 years of age, what do you expect him to do?

If anything, I feel sorry for Novak and Nadal for having to put up with this all the time...all they can do is beat him when he is standing on the other side of the net and when they do beat him, they didn't beat him when he was at his prime. But if they were to lose to him, then look out.

Djoker and Nadal can't win, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. Federer should just retire already he's not winning any more slams.

You are wrong.
He's not wrong.

He's just a bitter man who can't stand the fact that Sampras' records were eclipsed by such a margin, so quickly after Sampras retired. If Federer had come around in 2042 and achieved what he has 90's Clay (and Sampras) would be able to cope with it better than they are now.

For all the talk of being buddies with Fed, I'm sure Sampras did a fist pump in private today....

I was prepared for a possible shellacking by Nole today if he was in the zone (although I thought Fed was the slight favourite) and didn't allow his opponent to dictate. He was in the zone, did dictate and Federer still pushed him to the limits of endurance physically and mentally. People who thought this was an easy victory for Djokovic clearly don't know much about tennis. I could not believe how many times Joker hit the lines over the course of the match. As well as absolutely red lining he had the rub of the green quite a few times as well as on a crucial overrule (very poor call against Fed). This match could easily have gone the other way. Hats off to both players for a classic, nail biting final of the highest quality.

HEs not playing for fun. Playing for fun is having your slam record safe and just playing to get out of the house and away from the annoying wife.

His slam record is in jeopardy and he KNOWS IT. So he is doing what he can to do win more to probably put it out of reach.

Don't believe everything a player says to the media for cripe sakes. Its called PR for a reason

Why is the truth so darn funny :)

Nole CHOKED. Bottom line. He choked in the first set tiebreak and he choked again up 5-3 serving for the match.

Again.. This should have been a straight set beatdown but Nole's stupid error sprays made it go 5

You know who didn't choke? George Bastl. Nerves of steel!

... But today shows who Fed has always been. A guy who folds like a cheap suit in deciding sets under pressure
Nole's choking is what made the match "epic" This should have been a short 2 hour some minute match if Nole wouldn't have hit so many senseless errors on big points

90's Clay, a legend in his own mind? Can't seem to give credit where it is obviously due. If Nole choked, who's outstanding play was responsible for that?

Seriously what's the point of playing? He has lost all the big finals he has been in this year.

who wants to go home to young, screaming kids let alone TWO sets of twins!!!???

seriously though, he's still good. he enjoys winning more than hates losing and he still wins more often than not.

I'm not, and have never been, a Fed fan. Even though I think Nole choked the fourth set/win I was impressed with Roger'as ability to press on and make it competitive. He played some beautiful tennis.

It was a great match to watch.

i respect federer and his game alot. people say that djokovic choked and thats the only reason federer made a match of it, but if thats the case, that just makes djokovic look bad if he cant close out a match imo. djokovic seems to have mental/confidence problems. when hes confident he can do no wrong, but sometimes hes not and thats why this is the first slam hes won in 18mo., even in his prime when murray, and nadal have been part time players (injuries) and federer is past his prime. i think people should respect federer more and understand how good he is considering hes 32/33 years old. will djokovic still be a gs contender making finals in 2020 when hes 33? im not so sure..

I was just wondering if you ever get tired of the inanity you post. If not, it must be wonderful to be able to do that every few minutes.

For all those who dont fancy him much, has your opinion changed ?

He's exactly where he's been: historically, he's one of the best of the rest, but he is not the GOAT. He made a admirable effort to reach the final--which I wanted him to win as his retirement reward--but again, he's still in the same place in history.

By that logic, Novak should have retired after losing 3 slam finals since 2013. And, it goes w/o saying, Rafa should retire -- he seems to be past his prime as well.

I have the impression that in his prime he would have won this W final

That could very well be true. But then, even post-prime RF could have won the W final. Even tho' Novak played an excellent match, a few key points here an there could have made all the difference -- Roger could have ended up with the big cup rather than the plate.
