Have you ever permanently injured someone? On the tennis court that is.

Last year I had an overhead coming and the guy tried to avoid it by ducking. But my smash came almost straight down and it bounced and came right into his face. His eye was bleeding and he was in tons of pain. Now he can't play during the day because his pupil doesn't dilate.
Everytime I see him now it's a mini-trauma all over again for both of us.

I once gave a guy a concusion and broke his coller bone when we both collided straight into each other in hockey.

Spoken to him since?
Oh yeah, we talk. He doesn't hate me or anything(I don't think) and he even jokes about it sometimes, but I always wonder what's really going on underneath. He used to play with his friends in the mornings all the time and now he can't.

I played varsity Football (soccer for Americans) in highschool and during a game I slidetackled someone and apparently this guy landed on his right knee and I heard a really terrible sound. never saw him again but the last I saw was half of his team carrying him to the ER. it was out of town so never went there again. tried to call the school just to show some repect and show that I cared but no one was able to give me any inbfo at the school so I'll never know what happened. I hope nothing serious, I always meant well you know. usually a slide tackle causes just a fall but is harmless for the most part.

I pegged someone in the eye once when he came to net and I blasted an inside out forehand. He had his eye shut and we couldn't continue playing. Fortunately for both of us, he had no permanent damage, but he got hurt badly enough that day.

i slidetackled someone in the penalty box when he was about to score (a clean slidetackle, got all ball), he tripped over the ball and slammed into the post, got a concussion.

our goalie also paralyzed a kid. it was so sad. this kid had a breakaway, and our goalie charged (our goalie is so strong, it feels like u ran into a sheet of metal if u ran into him). the kid didn't move, went straight into a charging goalie.

i pegged a kid in the head at a tournament cause he kept sayin' stuff during my service motion; turns out i wasn't supposed to be even playin' him

You have a strange sense of humor. I must have missed it; I don't find it "funny".

How's this possible? I know pupil dilation is something the eye does in very low light. One would think that a pupil that doesn't dilate would lend itself badly to night play and better to day play. Or are the lights on the court at night far brighter than daylight?

i served a heavy kicker to the body of this guy to show him that he couldnt stand up close to my second serve and it hit kicked up really fast , it was a fast second serve because i was up and it hit him square in the knackers

As you said, the pupil dilates when it adjusts to the light coming in. When there's lots of light, it's small, and it enlarges when there's not much light and it needs to take in as much as possible.

So the guy's pupil must be permanently enlarged, which takes in way too much light during the day and practically blinds him.

Dilation is a different thing from contraction, which is why I asked the question in the first place. :) Is the injured guy like David Bowie and his pupil is permanently dilated, thus letting too much light in? Or does his pupil fail to dilate (i.e. permanently contracted) and thus lets too little light in?

I'm thinking it's the first option and the original poster just had the terms "dilate" and "contract" (v.) mixed up.

Yes I'm a very mixed up individual. His eye is permanently dilated I guess. You know your stuff! And I've always wondered why he just doesn't wear dark sunglasses during the day.

adely, your tragic post has given me second thoughts about hitting right at my opponent. Sorry about your friend.
Even though I do feel real bad about all this I still go right at people at net when needed and so should you. When someone's at net, they know(or should know) that a ball could come right at them and they should protect themselves.

The problem with my friend was that he was already protecting himself but just in an ill-advised way. Who would've thought that the smash would come the way it did?

If I suddenly see the ball coming towards me face, I put my head down so the ball will hit me on the top of my head. Yeah it hurts but there won't be any permanent damage and it is the fastest way to defend yourself.

Yeah, for me there's a rare chance of getting injured because if I'm up at mid-court or closer and somebody is about to drop a bomb on me - I duck and cover (close my eyes and quickly turn my body away from him).

On court, I have not permanently injured anyone, but when I was in Desert Storm, unfortunately, and I'm sad to say I have permanently injured some.

Well, in desert storm you could've done much worse than just injure someone. Perhaps you're the type of individual who thinks that becoming handicapped is worse than dying? Yeah, I'm like that as well.

Handicapped is worse than dying? I know a guy who's paralized from the waist down and he's probably the happiest person I know. What kind of handicap are you talking about?

They have wheelchair tennis you know...lol.

I don't know what kind of handicap I'd be able to handle. I'd give it some time and if I couldn't find happiness soon enough...

I was a varsity pitcher on my high school baseball team. And one game my junior year I threw a high fastball (I pitched in the mid 80's) that got away from me and hit the batter in the jaw.To make a long story short he had to have is jaw wired! It really affected me,I don't think I ever pitched at the level I was after that!

Still waiting on the results. I took a shot in ball hockey and it ended up smashing his glasses and causing plenty of bleeding around the eye. He was down for quite awhile. No idea if he sustained any permanent problems with his eye or not.

i was playing witha good freind of mine at a park one day. he's amiddle aged guy, maybe 35, and he rushed up to net after hitting a solid approach, i hit running lob, hewitt style, and he started backpedling and staring into the sun as the ball was very high. He tried veyr hard to get to the ball, lost his footing just before he siscor kicked, and ended up falling backwards very hard. He hit his head on the court and was down for about 10 minutes. luckily he didnt lose conciousness, but he did have a mild concussion. I felt terrible after doing that, and even now, about a year later, i rarel if ever use the lob. it was really as scary day. It took him 6 monthes to get back on the court and playing without having his knees shaky.

The guy I injured told me the other day that his eye is slowly healing! It's been almost a full year since the accident and I thought it would never heal but fortunately it would seem I was wrong. And, I got a great haircut yesterday!

I walked into a tree branch while I was walking towards the tennis courts. The branch poked me right in my eye. It felt awful but I was still able to play. I don't like playing doubles because I'm always afraid of getting hit. I can't believe there are people who deliberately try to hit their opponents at net...unforgivable.

You joking, Right? There is no rule that says you have to stand at the net during doubles. If you stand at the net, the purpose is to intercept the return and put it away, which makes you a fair target.

I was playing with a regular opponent and he just hit a forehand and snapped some tendon in his arm. He is a plastic surgeon and when he had it repaired they told him he could never play tennis again or he was risking his career since they didn't think it would hold. So he hasn't played since and its been years. He was just returning a shot I hit, so it wasn't really something I did out of the ordinary, but it was weird. I saw him the other day somewhere and we rehashed the whole thing like we always do every time we run into each other ever year or two.

Not in tennis but I managed to give a guy a concussion when I played varsity football. Unfortunately, he was my teamate. I tagged him pretty hard during hitting drills and he spent the rest of the day speechless and a bit confused. Our coach had him sit out for the rest of the day. Funny thing is, 3/4 of the way through practice, this guy just up and walks over to the wall and pees his name on it and, to this day, has no idea why.

I'll never lob again...

No, but I've injured people lol. I always seem to hurt people when I play tennis :(.

I remember in mixed doubles, this cute girl was my partner. I was trying out a new serve. A fake kicker setup (throwing it over my head), but a flat serve out wide. I was so off, and I accidentally hit her in the calf and I think bruised her :s.

I've lobbed over some people and they rolled their ankles, or tweak their knees. I've kicked served into people and hurt their shoulder. I've hurt some peoples wrists, elbows and shoulders from my bombing flat-forehands. I've slammed a few overheads into people.

Nothing permanent, but yeah.

Smashed a big flat serve into my friends back when we were playing doubles. He lifted his shirt up and a big red mark could be seen.

I think the only serious injury I have inflicted is to over inflated egos. Gosh, I don't even feel bad about it.

You got to love the game.

I've hit a guy in the crotch with an overhead, but he got up awfully fast...makes you wonder...?

i don't know if it's permanent, but i played flag football for PE class. we had two rushers going in for the quarterback, myself, and my friend Alex. we both rushed in to grab his flag and he took a step back and we both collided head to head. i was in pain and i grabbed my forehead. i didn't know what was happening but i looked around. this annoying black guy (VERY ANNOYING) said "Stop faking it i bet it was nothing. Stop being a p*ssy. lemme see." so i took my hand off of my forehead/eye and he said "AWW F**K! YOU'RE BLEEDING"

i was like "damn" until i went over to check up on alex. he was drooling blood. A LOT of it. we went to the restroom with the teacher and he wiped the blood away. turns out my forehead rammed into his teeth. his teeth got loose and jammed into his gums a bit which was why he was bleeding. i was bleeding form bite marks.

so i went home, no concussion, he's better now, so i don't know if anything happened. i doubt it though, but it was still scary. first big injury i ever had/caused.

so far, i've injured 3 players this year. i haven't injured any players before so 3 was a surprise within a year. 2 broke their ankles and i pulled a muscle. they're recovering slowly though ;)
