Have you ever seen a pro miss a serve?

This just came in to my mind because I just recalled seeing some ATP pro - whose name I can't even remember - actually trying to hit a 1st serve and missing on that serve during some grass tournament last summer. It counted as a serve since he had swung his racket ,even though he didn't hit the ball.

I was wondering if someone can remember this same scene and tell the name of the player or remember other missed serves done by pros.

The worst serve i've ever seen was by Lleyton Hewitt, back when he was #1.
He hit the ball, the ball flied beyond the net, beyond the service box, beyond the baseline, and bounced a feet before the fence.... Awful !

A couple of years ago I remember seeing Roddick shank a second serve that went into the stands behind the chair umpire.

i remember watching one time when johnny mac served at the ball flew beyond the net and box and hit the back wall. The line judged shouted fault and johnny mac walked calmly up to the net and put his hands on his hips and said "ARE YOU SURE?" haha it was hilarious!

Hewitt hit serve at RG once that bounced once on his side before hitting the net.. i think it was second serve. He hit it off the frame

Yeah, I've seen plenty of bad serves that are framed and go nowhere... but have never seen a pro whiff a serve.

What about the time that Safin was serving and his racquet broke. The head seperated from the handle and the head flew into the net and he was just standing there holding the handle. It was hilarious.

I've seen Ander Jarryd completely miss the ball on his serve. I've also seen Tim Mayotte (if you remember him) several times miss-hit his serve and have it bounce before it got to the net. Other than that Ive seen quite a few players mess up a kick serve, connect with the top of the frame and have the ball fly over the fence or hit their first serve so far out it travelled past the baseline before landing (Todd Woodbridge had a habit of doing that in singles).

Edberg could mishit some serves so badly, that they could fly into the stands. Becker lost a wimb final in 1990, when he grinned about one of Edberg's bombs, that gave him a break in the 5th. Stefan saw that, got angry and broke back from 1-3 down in the last set. I saw Sabatini at the USO hit a first serve into her own half.

i saw serena williams miss one completely and the ball she tossed hit the back of her head. Her sister was in the stands watching and she mouthed "You serious" it was hilarious.

Ancic did the same last year or 2004. He hit a backhand and the racket flew into the net and he was just left with the handle. Was really funny.

Yeah i was watching at the time. It was sebastian grosjean at Queens this year. He threw the ball up and just totally missed it. The commentators said that they had never seen anything like it and suggested that it was good for people watching as it shows that even the pros make stupid mistakes sometimes. Grosjean just took it light-heartedly and laughed at himself, pretty certain that he got the second serve in, as you said that serve was counted as he had swung at it.

This happens to me quite frequently, very embarrassing, luckely I don't play any real matches, just for fun, but it is still embarrassing when the ball lands on the other court.

So it was Grosjean... Thanks for making me remember, I have to keep that in mind from now on :)

Three weeks ago, I connected a kick serve on a wooden-racquet fun match with a friend, and the follow-thru of the racquet ended on my leg... the serve got in, but I coulnd't play the point... or the next one, or the 5 after that, since I really hurted my leg :p

(don't try hitting your "foreleg" (how do you call the part between your knee and your ankle?) with a wooden frame.... hurts like sh%t !!! )

I have a clip but its kind of bad in the beginning because Rafa has trouble with english so he stick his finger up. So I don't know if I'll be able post a clip of this, but Safin's reaction was funny.

As a quick aside concerning being hit in the back of the head: earlier this summer i was playing in a recreational doubles league and my partner hit ME in the back of the head with a serve, right at the base of the skull. It knocked me flat to the ground, and I was suffering from a concussion for the next five weeks. I couldn't concentrate, my balance was off (as in 'having difficulty walking a straight line' off), i'd get splitting headaches, nausea, and i had a ton of trouble sleeping. In two words: NOT FUN! Of course i can laugh at it now...but I absolutely refuse to ever play with that guy ever again. Cheers!
