As we all know playing tennis competitively is mentally challenging for a lot of players. Even at the amature level players get extremely nervous, tight, frustrated and so on. Did you ever encounter a mental hurdle where a particular element of tennis didn't work for you? if so how did you get over it or if you still experience it what happens and how are you dealing with it?
For me my backhand can break down at any moment in a match. I can drill backhands for days in practice. I can hit short angles. I can hit winners cc or dtl. But sometimes in random matches all of a sudden it's gone. I lose my confidence in it and I completely frees resulting in very robotic backhand swing, shanks, hitting the backfence or the bottom of the net. I always have the fear in a match that my backhand can break down at any moment. It makes me fidgety even when I'm cruising in matches.
I have been playing a lot of tennis/tournaments lately. Couple weeks ago I played 4 matches in a tournament without problems and won them all comfortably but it broke down in the final during the warm up. I lost in three sets.
Yesterday I won the first set 6-0 in the first round of another tournament hitting decent backhands. Then at the start of the 2nd set I had flashbacks of missing terrible backhands and I could not hit it anymore. I won the 2nd set in a tiebreak.
I put it a lot of time in practice drilling backhands I hit millions of them. I took private lessons to improve my backhand slice and dropshots to give me other options if i lose the plot again. I made some notes to read during changeovers to calm me down. If anyone has other tips or similar experiences please share them in this thread
