Having a 1h and a 2h BH?

I currently have a 2h bh. I'm a lefty.
I have a continental on my dominant hand (left hand) and a sw on my non-dominant hand (right hand).
I can drive it pretty deep, and can knock a few winners off of it. However, it is very very flat, I almost never get any spin. Infact, you can watch the seams on tennis ball spin after I hit it. heh heh... :-?

So if I get a ball anywhere from the bottom of my ribcage or above, I can absolutely destroy it.
But if the ball is under the height of the net, I usually have to give a weak return.
Also, I can't hit sharp angles (but that's partially because of the lack of spin)

I've tried to hit a few 1h bh for fun, it is not that bad. I certainly get a lot more topspin than my 2h.

Could I possibly play with two bhs? Like on serve return, I could use a 2h, and use a 1h for normal rally. If I get a short ball, I could change grips as I run.

Is this plausible at all, or am I out of my mind?

Well, Tommy Haas experimented with the 2h for better returns for a while, but really, you should pick which ever one feels natural and stick with it. If you are getting more spin out of your 1h backhand, perhaps you should take that up, develop it, and watch it grow into a reliable weapon instead of a flat, unreliable hail mary shot.

Are you serious, but Haas has such a sweet 1 handed backhand

My 1hbh is my better style of stroke, but it takes me an extra fraction of a second to set up and swing it. If I'm rushed, fighting off a deep drive, or going for an aggressive return of serve, I'll naturally go to the 2hbh. There's always the slice bh, too.

I don't get confused with which type of stroke to use since I can tell right away when I can't set up my one-hander. When I have the proper time to use it though, I can get significantly better power, accuracy, and spin with my 1hbh. Both types of topspin backhands seem to be quite useful in my opinion and if you can use both with confidence, I'd expect you to be able to deal with more shots.

It is possible to do this. If not, then my entire game is a figment of my imagination. It's actually easier than people think.

Ask yourself, are you able to switch between 2 hands for groundstrokes and 1 hand for volleys? Most people do that just fine, because volleys and groundstrokes are two completely different shots. It doesn't cause any confusion for them.

Most people don't realize it, but against hard servers, returns are completely different than normal groundstrokes, almost as different as volleys. So, getting ready to return, you know it's ok to use 2 hands, because you're hitting a return and not a normal groundstroke. Once the ball goes in play, you know you can use 1 hand the rest of the point.

playing with both a oney and twohanded bh is a bad idea. doesnt work. your going to think about which one to hit when and what shot etc. i switched to a 1 handed "by accident" 4 years ago and my one handed is so much better. not saying 1h is better, my 2h just wasnt technically sound. i suggest you play around with the 2h and not go to 1h cuz i had a TOUGH 2 years trying to build up my 1h. play around with 2h adjust the grips, it shouldnt be hard to find a way to put spin on the ball

Everyone says that, but it's just not true. For example, you don't get confused and accidentally hit a 2 handed volley, and no one tells 2 handers they have to volley with 2 in order to avoid confusion. In fact, they specifically tell them not to, because volleying is better with 1. Same with the slice. No one says Andy Murray is only confusing himself by hitting slice with 1 hand and topspin with 2.

I use 2 for specific shots and 1 for everything else, and I never get confused. As long as you don't try to use both for the same type of shot, then you'll be ok.

I don't buy this either.

I don't have any problem using both. For quite a while, I hit only 1-handers. Developed some elbow problems earlier this decade and started to experiment with the 2-hander. Because of shoulder problems (external rotation) in the past 2-3 years, I've revisited the 2-handed. I now use it for 20-25% of my BH shots. Most of my BHs are 1-handed slices but I still hit the occasional 1-handed topspin. Deciding which BH to use at any given time is more of a reaction or a reflex -- thinking does not get in the way.
