Hawaii Five-O

BTW, check this out: http://promotions.mardenkane.com/cbs/marchingbandmania/index.cfm
It's college marching bands all over the U.S. playing the Hawaii Five-0 theme song.

The only other theme tune that works with college marching bands is the 1960s sci-fi/puppet series "Thunderbirds". Sounds awesome, but the Five-O theme is the absolute kickin'est TV theme tune ever, given the short opening credits. In 30-40 seconds I can't help but bust a move.:)

I really can't think of any other theme music that comes to mind. I'm sure there are many others but none that spring to mind so quickly when you say "Cop show theme tune". Charlies Angels? Nup. Streets of SFO? Uh-uh. Law and Order? Zzzzzzz. SWAT? Maybe, but the opening credits are just cops jumping into the van. Oh hang on, how about "The Professionals" (UK)?
Five-O's opening tune combined with the visuals of McGarett on the balcony, Danno running in the heat of the night, that flashing siren, the girl running on the beach, the jet engine close-up...and Zulu crashing through the door!

^ Nope, not before my time. Domo for the 77 Sunset Strip vid. Forgotten about that one. Previously listed the Peter Gunn theme & a few others. No one has answered my trivia challenge from that post:

...

There is room in this world for both the MI and Five-O theme music. Other favorites include the Mike Hammer theme and the Peter Gunn theme. The latter has been a staple for rock bands for several decades. Check these out:

Speaking of NCIS, check out this related theme song (huh?):

.

What is the relationship between NCIS and the last show listed?

Very good. Do you remeber this gem? In an espisode in season 2, Agent Jethro Gibbs is asked, "What did Ducky look like when he was younger?" The answer can be found in this video tribute:

Now try this challenge:

...

Trivia: Any one know which of the new 5-0 task force played a starring role in a series that was somewhat reminiscent of "Forever Knight"? (Possible cookie awarded for the 1st correct answer).

I remember the theme for 77 Sunset Strip. It included the words "77 Sunset Strip" followed by snapping fingers. So cool. Peter Gunn was a groovy show. Who was the guy who played Peter Gunn? Don't google it, please.

^ I can picture the face and the hair but do not recall the name of the PeterGunn actor. If you gave me his initials, I might be able to come up with it.

Speaking of 77 Sunset Strip, can you name the title of the novelty hit song sung by Edd Byrnes -- it related to his character's grooming habit?

surfin' CSI needs some better plots?

Not seeing anything wrong with the plots. Still enjoyin' the show.

It trips me out how fast people respond on this site. No, I can't give you his initials, and I'm not going to cheat by doing a google search. I can picture his face- well-groomed dark hair, handsome man, low masculine voice. I just remembered his first name- "Craig."

All I can say is it has something to do with combing hair with a comb.

^ Yup, Craig sounds familiar but it is still on the tip of my brain.

Byrnes' character, Kookie, was contantly pulling out his comb and running it thru his hair. Could be why we all carried combs all the time back then. The song was, "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb".

Craig Stevens. Don't remember what else he was in, but his Peter Gunn was a nice performance.

Oh yeah. I'm sure that the music, the Peter Gunn theme, did quite a lot for the show and his career.

He was in quite a few movies and other TV series. In the mid-70s, he did a short-lived series, The Invisible Man, with David McCallum (NCIS, Man from U.N.C.L.E.)

Book'em Danno (James MacArthur) died today. Adopted son of Helen Hayes.
Former wives include the woman who played David Spade's mother on Just Shoot Me and the woman who played Wrangler Jane on F Troop. I bet everywhere he went everyone said "Book'em Danno" to him.

Was Craig Stevens the guy who was the first head of the IMF pre-Pete Graves? True story, I saw a commercial with Peter Graves in it. Thought, Geez, Peter Graves is still alive? He must be pushing 80. Next morning, I looked at the news, he's died that morning. His older brother James Arness of Gunsmoke fame is still kicking around I think.

Edit: It wasn't Craig Stevens, it was Steven Hill. Perhaps better known as the first DA on Law and Order. I thought I saw him in an airport once but wasn't sure it was him.

Yeah, I heard that this morning as well. Quite sad. :(

I was hoping that he would show up in a cameo on the new show sometime this season, perhaps playing the current Dano's father?

I hope the producers of the new show at least dedicate the next episode to James MacArthur.

BTW, James MacArthur also played the cowardly lieutenant in the WWII epic "Battle of the Bulge", one of the best WWII movies ever made.

^^^So who are the surviving members from the original series? Kono? Duke? Even the Eurasian babe who ran along the beach in the original opening credits died years ago I read somewhere.

Jack Lord (John Ryan) aka Steve McGarrett died about 10? years ago. He was the reason the show was shot in Hawaii because he lived there and the producers agreed to shoot it in Hawaii.

Kono (Zulu?) died a few years back. He had been in poor health for quite a few years. Chin Ho Kelly, if he is still alive, must be about 90.

Edit: Pretty much everyone in the original cast has kicked the bucket. Not too surprising since the show started in 1968.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062568/fullcredits If you page down, you will see links to bios of all the original cast members.

Chin Ho Kelly (Kam Fong) had quite an interesting life. Lived in HI his whole life, was at Pearl, family was killed when two B-24's collided over his house in 44, was a cop in HI for many years, ran for Governor, etc.

FYI pretty sure Jack Lord appeared as CIA agent Felix Leiter, James Bond's American contact, in the earliest 007 film(s) opposite Sean Connery. And a young James Macarthur starred opposite Stephanie Powers in a cheesecake romance called "Doctors in Love"(?)

1. Khigh Dhiegh (Wo Fat) isn't Asian although he was frequently cast as one (perhaps because of The Manchurian Candidate?).

2. Nice touch with Lappert's and some other landmarks. Perhaps they can include Ono's, Rainbow, or L&L.

3. Further nice touch with the opening sequence 2.0 based on the original, despite the makeover with the Ilikai.

Jack Lord, (late) James McArthur, (late) Kono, (late) Kam Fong, etc... all irreplaceable. Imagine someone taking Peter Graves' place on MI.

Go get grinds!

Wo Fat escaped from prison and later opened a manufacturing facility in the PRC to produce counterfeit Babolat and Wilson rackets.

The Wo Fat character was apparently named after a chinese restaurant in Honolulu. The guy that played him was born Kenneth Dickerson in NJ and was of mixed race, but as mentioned above, not at all asian.

So did I. His "Danno" was way better than this Caan guy's version.

nah

Been watching the show for a few weeks and decided to dump it. I tried to like it but it's becoming the typical mindless garbage on TV lately. Nothing new or imaginative whatsoever.

It's interesting that Maggie Q was first offered to be the female lead on Hawaii 5.0, but turned it down for a role with more depth. I really like Nikita better.

McGarrett drove a black Mercury Marquis for most of the series. My mom actually drove a yellow one in the late 70's. :)
Did anyone catch the return of the black Mercury Marquis in last night's season finale? :) It looks like they were paying homage to the original Steve McGarret (Jack Lord) by having the new Steve McGarret drive his old 70's black Mercury Marquis in one scene in the finale (when McGarret escapes arrest and drives to the big guy's home to pick up guns and ammo).

Oh, BTW, that was one of the best season finales of any show I have ever seen. So many shocking surprises and twists and turns.

Agreed the car was cool.:) And the best season finale ever. Can't believe Danno's ex-wife got on the plane without him.
