Legend
Double Happiness For Nadal At Beijing Roger Is Still The Best

Today ATP announced that Nadal became the new World No. 1, bringing to an end of Federer’s era since February 2004. Today is the first day Nadal has the Olympic gold medal and he already caused 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games gold medalist, Andre Agassi, to exclaim in surprise when that year the American player achieved nothing but only the Olympic gold medal while Nadal has fought for 7 titles and managed to be at the top at the Olympic.

However, Nadal doesn’t have the luxury to enjoy the glory, no chance to tour the legendary sea (Hou Hai) he heard from his compatriots, no time to play cards with Gasol again at the Olympic Village. Today he will depart for America, back to ATP. So yesterday was very precious, he even attended the Spain's celebration party at Beijing Centre after his match, and of course did an exclusive interview with Marca and Titan.

Titan: We don’t understand, you are already ATP No. 1, why don’t you take a special “No. 1” photo? Then isn't our placard “No. 1” (ie. In English and Mandarin) prepared in vain?

Nadal: Very sorry, I don’t wish to have a photo holding up this type of placard because it is not the 18th yet. Beside, I only wish to play good tennis, try to have more victories. The world no. 1 ranking is not very special to me, it doesn’t change my tennis career. Ferrero and Moya were former No. 1 before me, now there are a lot of younger tennis players out there. I know a lot of people care about who is world no. 1 but I don’t.

Titan: Doesn’t it excite you when you wake on the 18th, switched on the pc and see your name before Federer?

Nadal: Nothing exciting, firstly I know it before coming to Beijing, everybody knows. Secondly, it’s only temporary. To me, he is still the best. Federer’s recent performance did surprise me, maybe it’s because he lost his confidence due to recent losses. However, Federer’s exquisite technique is still there, he will certainly find back his fighting spirit.

Titan: Nadal is also not concerned about the Olympic gold medal?

Nadal: This is a different matter, there will be changes in the ranking, one doesn’t always stay No. 1 but the Olympic gold medal will belong to me forever, I will cherish this piece of gold medal from Beijing.

Titan: Upon your arrival at Beijing, you don’t look as friendly as today, some media even said that you were being difficult?

Nadal: I’m really very sorry, I was too tired, 9 matches in 15 days, time difference of 12 hours, played first match to the final in the first week of Olympic, I’m going crazy. But finally I survived, everything is like a dream. Maybe during this busy and tired period, I couldn’t oblige with the media especially the Chinese media requests, I can only ask for forgiveness. Tomorrow I will be flying to USA for my next tournament’s preparation, time difference of 12 hours, it’s really not easy to play tennis.
Titan: Gonzalez won a gold and bronze at the Athens Olympic, a straight set defeat today, has the Nadal era arrived?

Nadal: Don’t say that, Gonzalez has outstanding skills, very good serves, I’m very lucky this year, I hope the luck will still stay with me.

Titan: Grand Slam, Olympic gold medal, ATP no. 1, what else does Nadal need?

Nadal: Improving technique, to win more titles. And try to have a normal life.

Titan: You seldom venture out of the Olympic Village?

Nadal: I think that the Beijing Olympic Village is specially comfortable, I need to adjust to the time difference, to recover physically and the Olympic Village provided me everything. I have been to the Athens Village, even though the time was short but I know the basic function of an Olympic Village. Beijing Olympic Village surprised me, there’s everything inside. To be able to live with so many compatriots, I don’t feel lonely at all, especially Spain’s national basketball team made me forget homesickness. The truth is, I have been away from home far too long during this period.

Titan: One can imagine, even at the Village, Nadal can’t escape photo and autograph requests?

Nadal: Yes, everyday is the same but I’m used to it and willing to accede to the requests. Many staff attended to us in the heat, you can’t decline their requests.

Titan: What’s your favourite place at the Beijing Olympic Village?

Nadal: The field in front of my apartment, there’s wireless internet connection, even though the grass is different from Wimbledon but it’s still very soft. I often pulled up a towel and lie down to surf the net.

Titan: Any special memories at the Village?

Nadal: Of course, many approached me including one superstar. That day I was having my breakfast when my compatriot told me that Michael Phelps was having breakfast behind us. I know he is the most outstanding superstar at this Olympic. I didn’t expect him to approach me after his meal. I was very touched and being a avid swimmer, I requested for a photo to be taken together. But both of us didn’t have camera, so we used Emilio’s mobile, but it was not well taken. However, I hope Emilio can forward to me after I arrived at USA, as I met the Olympic hero at Beijing Olympic Village.

Titan: Did you hear the Chinese fans’ support on court?

Nadal: This is the most sentimental place for me at the Olympic, I remembered there’s always 2 little girls whom will always shout “Nadal, Vamos, Nadal, Vamos” during my matches, I tried to chat with them in the end but found out that they don’t understand Spanish, they learnt it just to support me.

Titan: Did you thought of them when you won the gold medal?

Nadal: Yes, I won this gold medal for Spain but also for the Chinese fans.

Titan: Do you follow WTA?

Nadal: I’m getting more and more surprised that a number of Chinese female players advanced to the later stages, I think China’s tennis will soon improve, there’s sufficient fans here.

Titan: You are leaving soon, any last words for the fans, for Beijing?

Nadal: I know why Novak Djokovic cried after his loss to me, as an outstanding tennis player, he has a lot of chances to win Grand Slams but it not easy to win the Olympic held once every 4 years. So I have to thank Beijing for bringing me good luck and the Olympic Village for providing me everything which aided me in winning the title. To play for the national team and country has been my motivation since young and I want to thank Beijing for fulfilling my childhood dream. I also want to congratulate the success of Beijing Olympic, congratulate China’s athletes for their outstanding accomplishments. Good bye, Beijing!

Nadal Ascended To The Top Bringing Gold Medal To USA

Today the ATP announced that famous Spaniard Nadal surpassed Swiss Federer to be the No. 1 player. However, Nadal doesn’t have the luxury to enjoy this glory, he left hurriedly for USA with his Olympic Singles gold medal to prepare for the upcoming US Open. Nadal can’t bear to leave the Beijing Olympic Village, to bade farewell to his good friend, Gasol, and the staff. After acceding to photo and autograph requests with his fans at the Village, Nadal took his last photo at the Olympic Village and accepted Sohu’s exclusive interview.

Q: Have you kept your gold medal properly?

Nadal: Of course, I kept it in a very safe place. I will bring it to USA and hope that it will continue to bring me good luck.

Q: You mentioned before the difference between the Olympic event and Grand Slam events, what does Beijing Olympic mean to Nadal?

Nadal: People have misunderstood my explanation, I only wish to say that the Grand Slam is a professional tennis tournament, the Olympic is very comprehensive, both are different in the professional level. The Olympic gold medal is also important to me, I’m very excited for winning this gold medal. After all, you can only win this gold medal once every 4 years, while the Grand Slams are held every year. I represent Spain at the Olympic and to win the Singles, it will be a lifelong memory to me.

Q: What's your thoughts on being ATP No. 1?

Nadal: Very happy, it is the result of my hardship and sacrifices along the way.

Q: Federer is also at Beijing, any contact with him?

Nadal: He didn’t stay at the Olympic Village, we only met a few times on court but as the schedule was very tight, there isn't much contact

Q: A former idol is behind you, accomplishment feeling isn’t it?

Nadal: Yes, but Federer is still Federer to me, the Goliath whom raised the tennis level.

Q: You were the challenger to Federer in the past, now it’s reversed, is the pressure huge?

Nadal: No one won’t feel pressurized when facing Federer but it is my honour to play Federer.

Q: You are leaving Beijing, let’s talk about your impression of this city?

Nadal: It’s a pity that the tennis centre is so near to the Olympic Village, I couldn’t do any sight seeing, the schedule was also very tight, I also can’t go out. However, while on my way to watch Spain’s national basketball match, I noticed that Beijing is getting more and more beautiful. I also feel that the Beijing Olympic committee is very thorough, the staff are very professional and friendly, I spent an unforgettable 14 days at Beijing.

Q: Any last words?

Nadal: I feel very proud to be able to the gold medal at Beijing Olympic, I must thank Beijing’s fans for their support and the Olympic Village for the fine service. Good bye, Beijing Olympic Village, the difference with the Grand Slam is I only feel at home here. I will be back one day.

:)......................................

he's my favorite player, although I admire other players too. He's talked about the most at the moment and at the moment I only have enough time to find news about him.

Sorry.:(

We can talk about James Blake if you want. :(

damnit

its hard to hate a guy when he comes across as humble and modest and doesn't seem to let things get to his head....

maybe he's just incredibly media savvy... or maybe he's genuine... i don't know, but >.> (whispers) im kinda glad he's the world number one. i really want him to win the US OPEN(/whispers)

^^^Agreed. The guy is a fierce competitor, and has only brought-on more joy to watching tennis.

Without an up, there is no down.

Without a left there is no right.

Without a top, there is no bottom.

Without Nadal, there is no Fed.

He has truly made this era of tennis that much more fun to watch, and be a part of.

With that said, I still hate his fans on this board.

Agreed but I hate his fanboys.

Nadal sounds like the Terminator when he talks about Djokovic crying.

"I know now why you cry".

Now he just needs to be lowered into molten lava to perfectly replicate the ending of Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

True, it bothers me too, some are really messing up this board, but the same can be said about some fed fans...
Anyway, about Nadal, that's the best tennis could overcome, he makes it exciting now, nothing against Fed, sure not but i'm really looking forward to the next slams now! I really hope we see a lot of good matches between those two.

Last week i saw the movie Gladiator again, every time i see Nadal he reminds me of that movie, he's such a fighter and competitor and still he's so modest, classy guy IMO

I agree

Even if you hate Rafa's game, you gotta love the guy.

I'm not a huge Rafa fan mainly because I identify with players who play with a different style (1HBH, S&V, etc) but man, this cat has class and his respect for his competitors and the game combined with his will to train and improve is just ridiculous. He's great for the sport in my humble opinion.

exactly : I feel that he is quite humble, watch him beat the crap out of R-FED in the French,he almost felt sorry for him... go look for yourself... no celebration after killing everyone in the Grand Slam that will identify his greatness.. he truly felt bad for R-Fed... it's all about respect ....

He sounds like he is just trying to get everyone to like him tbh

Nah. He just speaks that way all the time. He is very humble and so good natured. Gotta love the guy even if you arent a fan. Rafa is a class act, just like a certain Roger Federer.

Fun reads. Thanks for the the post. Nowhere near as fun though as any Safin interview. Marat is hands down my favorite guy to cheer for in any situation and even his interviews are entertainment, but, I agree with other posters that this is a great time to simply be a fan of tennis and watch Rafa and Roger.

safin is by far the coolest guy to interview because he's so funny. it's too bad he's hasn't been doing so well.

The Rafanator! :D

I think I quoted an article here where Rafa once said Roger was "from another world." Personally, I don't think either of them is from this planet.

Thanks for the translated articles. Rafa has become my favorite athlete of all time. I have no idea how he stays so humble and seemingly grounded.

Safin on the other hand is also a joy to watch and listen to, but I noticed that he mumbles and I wonder if he's hard to understand in other languages. Let's face it, with Safin looking so perfect and all, maybe he's not so great because he mumbles?

I saw Safin warming up shirtless in LA and he's kind of perfect looking, so maybe I'm looking for something wrong with him :)

But his personality is great. He made a nice volley before the tourney, so I said to him that he'll win it, and he sheephishly said, "yeah, right." And I guess he was right.

Not to change the topic too much, but Safin also has a stupid looking tattoo on his upper back and the two on his upper arms. There goes the modern statue of David.

Is Nadal going to wear the Gold medal during his US open matches?

He sounds like he is just trying to get everyone to like him tbh

And it's working! :D

What's not to like?

Thanks for the articles, babbette!

Yeah, Safin is funny in interviews. Even when he's depressed, he's still amusing.

Please don't apologize, I wouldn't want it any other way, looking forward to your threads every day ;-)
(By the way, some people only post threads about Fed and noone ever complains about it...)
