Head Correcting Extreme???

A Head rep told me that Head is re-doing the string pattern for the Head Extreme and Extreme Pro because there was an issue with the strings on those racquets that is the reason why the prices for those sticks have fallen so much. I heard the new modified Extremes are coming out in Feb 2009. If you have an current Extreme have you noticed any issues with these racquets?

If, and I do say if, this is the case, wouldn't it be nice if they did a recall instead!!

No, they're great. But there is some history to this. First of all, the Extreme Pro is a fabulous racquet. It was initially designed for Lubijic, and Youznhny also uses it. Lubijic switched from the Pure Drive, so Head wanted to accomodate him. They also seemed to use it as a bit of an experimental racquet and made the head rounder and wider. This seems to accomplish several things - wider sweet spot and less torque on off center shots. Still terrific control. I think it is reasonable to compare the Extreme Pro version to an Aero Pro Drive or Pure Drive with a wider sweet spot and more stability.

The only problem was that Lubijic seemed to have difficulty adjusting. For those of us who aren't pros and were not making the transition from the Pure Drive, the Extreme Pro, if it was your cup of tea, was just fantastic. But for Lubijic, Head had him go to their facility in Austria and they tweaked the racquet, mainly through different sting spacing (their was a post on this and a link to an article on this board- do a search if you like). Of course, Lubijic, is now somewhere in the vicinity of #45, after being in the top ten when he switched racquets. Youzhny, of course, climed in the rankings, at least for a while.

So the new Extreme Pro has Lubijic's string spacing and it also adds teflon grommets. The Extreme does not appear to have the new string spacing. See for yourselves in the 2009 Head catalogue - http://www.headpenngallery.net/e-catalog/
