Head Gravity 98 16x19 (Coming in 2025!)

I will try Mach 10 with Higher Tension, Lynx Tour and Tour Bite Soft

Lynx Tour could be an issue for my elbow. The comfort is something that I like on the Mach 10

I cross Lynx tour with softer crosses due to comfort and it works fine. Even mach10 might be ok. But I already crossed it with hawk touch 1.20, wasabi x, enso pro, toro toro..

Review of gt98 after 4 months of use coming from pure aero 98 and 305s (same customizations)

my playstyle and playing level: all court player with heavy focus on serve and forehand, around utr 8

customizations: 7 g added to handle, 2 g 12 clock, 2 g at 9 coming out at 31.8 balance, 345 sw, and 341 total weight

strings: tourna silver 7 tour 1.3 g

serve: a top tier serve racket for all types of serves 10/10

groundstrokes: tricky to dial in for the forehand but an absolute top tier backhand racket for me; both 1 and 2 hands. Works excellent for both spin and flat. Little free power but the least power capped racket I've tried so far meaning that the harder I swing and better I hit the sweet spot the faster the ball goes. I had a hitting session where I did regular cross courts with this and pure aero, and when feet are set and I really let it rip the gt98 delivered significantly more power. Downside would be that it's pretty bad on defence except for slice shots, very very excellent slice racket - biggest caviat is forgiveness, doesn't give that much off center and the flat directional control is not bad but not the best

volleys: not that much power on the volleys but the feel and control makes up for it.

maneuverability: racket feels at times a bit sluggish which is most heavily noticed on forehands, especially run around inside in forehands, can get hard to set up

stability: not the most stable racket in stock unless you really swing out and/or perfectly hit the sweet spot.

feel: best feeling 98 i've tried so far (tried ezone, pure drive, 305s, pure aero) very much on par with percept and pro staff 97 - i'd say it has better feel than ps97. You are extremely connected to the ball and the sweet spot is very very well defined, not big, but defined. Racket feels A LOT stiffer than the 59 suggest, feels stiffer than my pure aero by quite a bit.

conclusion: highest power/spin ceiling in any racket I've tried so far with maneuverability/unstableness being the biggest downside, meaning you really need your feet to be working well to get anything from this racket.

Any recs for the equivalent of an X1 biphase 1.30 full bed for the GT98, because I presume this racquet will eat multis in a few hours? I use a full bed of multi or a hybrid multi/thin (NXT soft and Razorcode (1.18) poly set-ups on a set of PS97 v13s for a few years and will continue to do so until any elbow soreness and nerve sensitivity in rotator cuffs have disappeared. At the moment, I also have Triax and XAlt on two rackets which seem to be ok as well and a half-way house to poly.

For the racquet itself, am looking for a new control racquet with more spin and forgiveness than a Pro Staff but one which will be even easier to get back on the attacking front. I'm a mere 4.0 but can generate my own power easily and win points with power and placement. Serves should be more powerful too on GT98. 1HBH, m40s.

Previous rackets tried were Blade 98 v8 16m (comfort issues but played great), Prince Tour ATS 98 (great, but too HH and frame too thick), and EZ100 (way too much power and not comfortable). Will also try the new Prince Tour 95 when the 2026 ones launch.

Edit: was Black Code 1.18

Truffle X from Toroline might be worth a try based purely on comfort. I dont know how it plays in a full bed though. Or you could use it as a cross with one of your preferred strings.

i tried hybrid setup with multi main. it last between 2 and 4 hours depending of the gauge.
You should not overlook the extreme MP (i am also mid 40, 4.0, OHBH)

I tried Wasabi and Caviar in my GT98. it didn t like at all. Lynx tour or variants hawk are best suited for this racket

I didnt like Caviar that much either. But Toro Toro and Otoro Tour play great in the GT98. Lynx tour as well.. Id say Otoro Tour > Lynx Tour > Toro Toro in order

Whoa whoa whoa where did you find razor code 1.18? I’ve never seen thinner than 1.20 but always looking. I’ve even tried EU sites but assumed they didn’t make it in that gauge.

Sorry, was Tecnifibre Black Code 1.18, not Razor Code, strung on crosses at 50lb with NXT Soft on mains at 52lb.

That explains it. If you've used both enough to say, can you compare the two strings? I love razor code white for its predictability (being round) and the power it gives while still being somewhat firm and not launchy. Is the biggest difference that Black is shaped, and maybe has a little more spin access? And how does the comfort compare?

I haven't used Razor Code and only knew about it because the stringer said Razor Code by accident when trying to recall what it was he put on. Regards the setup I have, I'd say it was still on the harsher side compared to multi, but the playability was excellent. Was getting way more RPMs on slices, drops, and regular spinny forehands than full bed X1. I've only used it about 10 hours but it sat on the racket over the summer so it needs changing. My arms hurts after trying it today in wet windy weather (doubles). Also, the thin poly notches the NXT soft quickly so the initial euphoria doesn't last long. Would probably be better with syngut on mains if going hybrid.

How heavy are people going?

I've gone with:

5g total (2.5g each side) at 3 and 9
5g total throat (2.5g each side)
the rest inside buttcap and stuck on the bottom of the buttcap
dampener

for a total of 354g static

with so much weight in the handle it still feels pretty manoeuvrable, and stability (which was its major weakpoint) is vastly improved. it just plows through the OHBH now - my swing speed has actually increased, as I was finding I had to hold the racquet tighter and further up the grip than I wanted (slowing down swing speed & leverage) to stabilize it. slice feels much better on both forehand and backhand - again way more stable. either original or current weight setup i'm finding chest height and higher forehands difficult to time consistently. the high launch, high sweetspot, and all the weight feel amazing for low to hip height balls on the forehand though.

maybe you got an underspec one because the tour’s twist weight is vey high. just surprised you would add weight to 3&9.

I've seen other people complain about stability in stock here too. And I believe Allen from AC Tennis (IMO the best reviewer) added quite a bit at 3/9, 5/7 and throat for stability, as well as leather grip.

Both he and I have pretty big swings on OHBH though. I can see it being a non-issue for people with 2HBH.

But I've no measuring equipment at the moment, and people are warning against me buying a second or third frame without measuring everything, as supposedly variance on the GT '25s are less than ideal (to put it mildly). If I remember correctly it was bang on for strung weight (in 17g) though at 324g. No idea about balance, SW, twist.

In my experience these more pro level Head racquets are engineered to come alive with lead spread wide at 12, so you get added twistweight also. Notice how the bumper guard is very wide, to hide the lead tape. Start with 340 swingweight and then move up or rather down. For me it plays OK from 328 as a minimum, exactly what TW lists, it plays nicely but slightly underpowered from 335sw but I prefer a bit higher still, 338 or 340. With a single hander I also add 5-8g to the upper half of the handle

I wouldn't really recommend adding to the throat, I think you're only slowing yourself down

Also, since forever, most Head pro level racquets arrive with stock sw in the 320-325 region, and 2-3g below spec. With the intention to easily match 6-8 racquets for young competitors

So I often ignore what TW writes, as it often just doesn't happen in reality. I think they list it as a goal, a minimum spec where it should start to play OK, manufacturer's recommendation kind of

My Gravity 98 is at 289sw, 304g. That's 320-ish sw strung with 1.30

I don't have any measuring equipment currently or a second racquet to do side by side testing, so I'm just going by what others have reported has worked, and my own experimentation. Adding weight to the throat, both in isolation and with 3/9 weight helped. The racquet has a pretty flexy throat, so it's not surprising that more mass in that area increases perceived stability.

I did add some minimal weight to 10, 12 and 2, like 2.5g total. SW got to 330. It doesn't need more, it's a frame to be swung fast to get maximum out of it. If you want more SW, go with GPro, of something of Prestige lineup. GTour is a flexy-feeling precise spin-tool for modern game, not your oldish PT57 reincarnation...

Fully agree with this. GT98 performs at its best with high racquet head speed. That's even one of the cons about it that people mention: you have to be full gas all the time to perform well.

I haven’t played this yet but I can’t see how a high twist weight in stock form, 328 SW racket is lacking stability?

I think I might switch to this racket, feel is great, control is great, spin and power are also good. Played it stock with just a bit of weight in the buttcap to make it a tiny bit more HL. Strung it with Lynx Tour. Might get another one and string it with my usual gut/hawk rough combo.
@Trip You might wanna try this racket too. I've had the racket for about a month but never really use it in match play, just used it today, can't believe how free I am at swinging with this racket. Not sure what magic they put it in this racket. The way it swings and the feel of the racket (Weight distribution) reminds me of my nCode tour 90 but way easier to use. I think that's why I like it so much.

Forgot to mention the specs:
327.9 g (2.5g buttcap)
325.9 SW
32.25 cm
13.3 TW
Lynx tour 1.20mm 53/50 lbs

I bought the pro stock version of this racket, and it came customized. The specs were: 310 wt, 31.0 bal, 295 sw. (I knew it had lead under the bumper and silicone).

But something didn't feel right, at least that's how I felt. I felt like it was missing weight, but I didn't want to add any. I felt that with those specifications, my forehand shot was becoming “loopy,” not the launch angle, but my style of shot was becoming like that for some strange reason. So I wasnt feeling my shots were great or feeling good about them.

So I started researching the “stock” specifications of this racket and what people liked about it, and I wanted to see if I could modify my pro stock and find what was best for me.

I figured I had to start with the balance, to raise it to 32.0 (strung and with overgrip) by removing the silicone, which without stringing was probably around 32.7 or 32.8.

I intended to remove the silicone from the handle, so I opened the butt cap and found that apart from the silicone, the oval thing you remove or pop out from the buttcap, had integrated weight (like the Solinco kit). This little thing alone weighed 9.7 grams, so I removed it and put another oval thing from a regular stock racket (which weighs 1 gram).

I tried it out, and for me it was a DIFFERENT racket. It really was what my strokes were missing. The new unstrung specifications were approximately 301wt, 32.7 bal, 294 sw.

After changing the specifications, I started looking for the right string:

I've used these combinations:

1) Full Head Hawk Touch 1.25 at 50 lbs: It feels very comfortable, the spin is average, but it has power and I feel it goes very well with this racket. The ball pocketing is also very good.
2) Hybrid Hawk Touch 1.25 50 / Toroline Truffle X 54: Super mega comfortable, the spin is less than average, lots of ball pocketing, but for my arm, (i have TE), it's the best combo.
3) Hybrid Solinco Hyper G 1.25 50 / Hawk Touch 1.25 50 lbs: This is the best combo I've liked. The response from the racket bed is incredible, the spin is the best, and the feel when hitting is incredible. The only problem is that my elbow gets very sore afterwards.
4) Hybrid Toroline O-Toro Tour 1.23 / Truffle X: For some reason, this combo is very good, but has above-average power and spin (not spectacular) but I didn't like it because it made my wrist a little sore (very strange), but it's a very good alternative to the Solinco Hyper G.

Next combos to use: Solinco Mach 10/Hawk Touch and Toroline O-Toro / Hawk Touch

However, for me, this racket needs a slightly “stiff” string on the mains and something soft on the crosses.

It works on my left side really good as well. Both slices and backhands

Try lynx tour / hawk touch. Hawk touch in 1.20 and LT in 1.25

Just a quick update from my side on the GT98.
I replaced the TK82S pallets with the TK82.
I added silicone in the handle, making it slightly more HL.
Final spec, 335g strung (VS Bab @54 (15%), Hawk rough @48 (5%)) with OG, 335SW, 32.3cm balance.
Beautiful stick! Great feel, communicative (not muted). Great power, spin and control. The launch angle (what is had issues with testing the prototype with TK82S back in 2023) is excellent, not much different from my GT100 18x20. But much easier access to spin and power while maintaining control.
I also found it to be a very stable stick.

I’ll continue updating.
A little late for this GT98 topic but I finally got it and spent a few hours testing.
I played with stock form and also customizing (following dr sample).
Might not have the same specs but similar.
I regularly play with Babolat PS98 18x20 version and it's the one always give me the consistency.
And I got it strung with Lynx Tour (tension maybe around 20-21kg but Lynx tour always feel dead to me even newly strung).

Before customizing (stock) :
- Whippy as hell. I own and tried quite a lot of racquets before but nothing whippy and fast as GT98.
- Unstable with backhand (I play 2hbh). Significantly less stable than the PS (or GPro). Could not defend or attack when using backhand.
- Too launchy/wild to control. I just could not control the depth (or maybe because of the string)

After customizing
--> added 6gr to the lower throat, no pallet change
--> strung it with full bed yonex polytour spin 1.20 - 26kg- ended up with around 332gr strung.

- So stable with both FH/BH. A little less whippy but still feel good when swinging.
- Well controlled.
- I was able to launch missiles with FH anytime with high accuracy. (really need to move well to do it lol)
- My arm felt ok (a little sore but not much) even with the high tension.

Love it. It's giving me the excitement when hitting the ball.
Will test with more strings.

Im biased because mine is a bit overspec but basically agree with the post weight assessment. Lynx tour is a great string for it. I pair it with wasabi x or toro toro. Hawk touch is a good cross as well.

I loved it with poly tour strike too but the launch angle was lower so my consistency dropped unless I was on a very conscious and focused day.

Otoro tour is great as well as lynx tour. I dont care that much about feel so I prefer it actually.

I will try M8 next but could happily settle with otoro tour

For those that have added weights at 3 and 9, do you guys place it right at 3 and 9 or shift it upwards just a tiny bit towards 10 and 2 because of the head shape? I'm really loving this frame. Right now it's probably my favorite frame ever, I can't believe how easy it is to make balls in with this racket. It's just one of my GT98 has a much lower TW than the other (13.3 vs 13.9) which is very noticeable on the BH slice. I'm debating weather to add some lead at 3 and 9 or 10 and 2 due to the head shape.

Why not test hyperG + vanquish ?

This does sound an interesting racket, I saw a few players using them at the Nottingham Challenger this past week (Broom/Kukushkin) though I'm guessing they are pro stocks with Gravity paint jobs right? I think I saw Jay Clarke with one last year at this same event, (Nottingham ATP Challenger).
I have recently picked up a prestige pro 23 16x19 but I think this may have been a better option potentially. I am a big fan of the Head Boom Pro, intact I prefer the 315 balance for that racket in theory. I have been using the Prestige MP-L a lot and enjoying that but when I hit hard with that frame I find it is a little overpowered. This sounds improved in power from the prestige pro 18x20 which I have a couple of. I really struggle to get any power from that frame, I also recently finally got round to trying some Dunlop cx 200 tour 16x19 2021 version (red) and they are very much what I would have like the prestige updates to have been like. They are set up more like a modern frame similar to this gravity tour intact with the lower static weight but the higher swingweight. The prince synergy 98 is also a bit like this I have a few of where it matches up spec wise once again similar to the Wilson Blade pro which I haven't ever used. It looks like it may be cleared price wise a little bit as it does seem a more demanding racket to use, I have seen a few for sale nearly new and it seems it's definitely a harder frame to use than some of the other gravity series frames such as the older tour and the pro which has been very popular. I did think the gravity pro was a good frame but is struggles with its maneuverability and it felt difficult to adjust quickly and well at the net and when makeing late adjustments on certain shots.

Not necessarily.
Loss of spin probably but also a power launch angle due to higher tension.

I think I will try adrenaline from babolat.

I’ve been intrigued to give this a try.
I’m not really a RACKET switcher or one to demo many frames. But my good ole trusty tfight xtc’s are ready for retirement.
Feed back I’ve received on this frame from someone I know that’s used it said it would be a gem if it were 16x20. String spacing is too open for what’s deemed a control frame.

I spent time with the gravity pro as I thought it would replace my xtcs last year but too demanding in the Florida sunshine and heat/humidity ( weight and thin beam plus my aging body haha).

Any one tried multi full bed of multi on his gravity 98 ?

Yeah, full bed Technifiber X1 Bi - the stuff ND used when he was using multis to win a couple of slams. Had way more spin, power, feel, snapback and a higher launch angle than Solinco HyperMach (Mach10 mains, HyperG round crosses). But then Mach10 is complete garbage as far as I'm concerned. Better poly would likely yield different results. But if you're someone who struggles with hitting balls long, multis probably aren't the right choice for the GT. If you can keep it in the court, good multis feel great in it.

you got way more snapback out of a full bed of x1? Does hyper mach just get stuck out of place immediately?

Some people say Mach10 has good snapback ... others say it has virtually none. It returns to position (mostly), in my experience, but slowly. It feels like a wet noodle in all respects.

X1 is primo multi though. Only thing I'd say that's better is Gamma Livewire Pro, but that's crazy expensive.

I have not played with X1 in years, but while I do remember it being very powerful and feeling nice, I did not associate it with particularly good spin or snapback, especially compared to slicker multis like multifeel, NXT Control, or HDMX. I know many people love that string, though---was just surprised to hear it had better snapback than a full bed of poly in an open-patterned racquet.

X1 is super powerfull. Their is plenty of multi that are less powerfull

Mach10 seems to be divisive ... but for me it had no redeeming features, besides grabbing aggressive backhand slices pretty well (because it's so mushy and pockets deeply). Other polys would give you more spin than the X1 Bi. But I don't think playing a poly is a guarantee of more spin. I should probably also mention I played with the 17G X1 Bi - which a lot of people avoid due to fear of string breakage. I found it to have good durability, but then the only strings I ever had problem with breakage with, were syn guts in the late 90s and early 00s, which I broke constantly. The 16G would produce a significantly flatter ball.

The prestige MP-L does a good job of keeping some control still with a 16x19 pattern. It is a lighter racket though but the same beam width and similar layup I think. The gravity is a little softer though. Having tried a few different string patterns in recent years after being locked into Heads 18x20 for many years I find the drill pattern is the critical thing as I have played prince frames (16x18 and 18x18) that are very stable and predictable and not far off what the prestige pro newer version is in 18x20. The spacing on head frames is wider now for sure than it used to be and I've noticed the strings go a lot lower down to the throat which means they are further apart now. The Boom Pro 2024 is also a great playing predictable frame. I am very keen to try out a Gravity tour but have just purchased prestige MP-L, prestige pro 18 x 20 and 16x19 and also a Boom Pro and a prince synergy 98 which is a cool playing frame in a 18x18 string pattern so have to draw the line in further purchasing. I will have to look at a trade if anyone is interested as I am keen to try a gravity tour.

That is so weird. My GT98 retail frame measures 335SW strung with Gut (1.30)/poly setup, no lead in the hoop, silicone in the handle, standard grip and OG (static weight 335g strung), balance 32,2cm. Feels VERY stable and needs absolutely nothing.
Yes, it feels stiffer than the advertised RA, but definitely not "much" stiffer.
Does the standard grip (trapdoor) come with the weighted trapdoor or is there no added weight?
