Head MicroGEL Radical Oversize Racquets - are they arm friendly????

jimanuel12

Semi-Pro
i have read some good things about this racket, but it seems a bit too light, i am wondering if it is an arm friendly racket?
the stiffness rating is good at 56 but i thought a heavier racket was better for the arm. this racket is only 11.2 oz.
anyone had any experiences with this racket - good or bad??

Fun comfortable racquet to use. I'd demo it first and i'm sure you'll like it

I had a nasty case of te for about a year and a half. After using the mc rad for the last year it is all but gone. I added lead to increase the weight to about 11.6 @ 3 & 9. Also use gut mains and soft mult. on crosses. I have sence added poly crosses with no problems.

I played with the FXP Prestige Team for the past 5-6 years, which is also a very light frame (10.8oz) with a 102" head size and an even balance, but I never played with it without a ton of lead. Mine were set up at about 7.5 pts HL with 6g of lead on each side of the hoop at 3 and 9 and enough lead at the bottom of the handle to change the balance from even to 7.5HL. I wanted the larger head size, otherwise I would've gone with the FXP Prestige Pro. But if it's the 107" head size that you want then this might be a good frame for you. But I would suggest that you add enough lead to get the static weight up a bit so it's better for your arm, and you can also lead in the handle if you like a more head-light balance.

I liked mine but after I made some modifications. it starts out 3pt HL, so adding lead in a few areas mainly in the handle brought it to over 7 pts HL. At first I added too much and the fast increase in weight actually made my shoulder really sore. So now I think it went from 11.1 oz to 11.6. BTW i went to this racquest after using a Head that was rated 70 for stiffness and developed GE.

I have played with the MG Rad OS for a little over a year now and it is an arm friendly stick. However, as you noted it is a little light. On mishits, you can still get a good bit of vibration running down your arm.

I have several of these and after playing with lead tape and things, I have found that some weight in the handle can really make the racquet feel more solid. I have added a leather grips and around 6 grams of lead under the butt cap. I have also added a few grams at 12. I also have a shrink wrap sleeze on one that adds a similar amount of weight with just the lead at 12.

Frames feel much more solid. In the past I have felt some elbow twinges from playing full poly in cold weather. Since I have added the weight (and dropped my tension to the low 50s), full poly doesn't seem to bother me at all.

Love my MG Rad OS with the rubber band dampener. This is my third week and do plan to add a bit of lead tape (on order at the club). Right handed and have a right shoulder that's a bit tempermental. Hurts to push (moving snow) and twists (Arnold dumbell presses)

adding lead tape will help with the weight???

adding lead tape at 3 and 9o'clock along with some at the handle should get the weight up to around 11.6 or 11.7?

This is something you should toy with. Try experimenting. TW University has a great tool you can use. Adding lead tape where and how much, it will tell you what it will do to the racquet.

Yes, that'll help to give the frame more stability and better plow-through. I've played with a leaded up Microgel OS a couple of times and liked it better than the stock version. However, I ditched it because I think a smaller headsize is better for my one-handed backhand. I now primarily play with my Volk DNX 9 and DNX 10 mid.
