You make some thought-provoking points pertaining to the many opportunities for a good drink.

I cannot speak for the OP, but I feel the afternoon is an especially under-utilized time for imbibing. Evenings and nights are already quite popular occasions for such activity. In the morning, I personally do not always feel like having a drink or indeed being awake at all. But the afternoon? I can see no good reason not to drink.

To echo my thoughts above, I think we can all aspire to drink more in the afternoon.
I agree with you.
Moreover, drinking in the morning may reveal some problems.
The exception may be something drank in the mornings in the Bolivian countryside made with fresh milk yield and singani (similar to pisco), called leche de tigre (not to be confused with the Peruvian stuff).

This is a good discussion on the timing. You guys all make really good points, although I would disagree regarding morning drinking. When your creative juices are flowing, there is nothing like a drink first thing when you wake up. If you have appointments that prevent you from drinking in the morning, perhaps you need to reassess your priorities.

I think this depends very much on what you do for a living.

@SoBad , my latest adaptation to consuming the Russian Life Fluid is delicious! I go across the street for a banana mango smoothie, then take a few slurps of it before replacing the consumed volume with Uncle Vanya’s sauce.

It's quarter to three
There's noone in the place
Except you and me

So set them up Joe
I've got a little story
You oughtta know

We're drinking my friend
To the end of this brief episode

So make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

And I've got a lot of things I'd like to say
And if I'm gloomy, please listen to me
Till it's talked away

Well that's how it goes, and joe I know your gettin'
Anxious to close
Thanks for the cheer
I hope you didn't mind

Lana Del Rey: ‘I was sent to boarding school age 14 to get sober’

While dispelling rumours of her past put to her by the interviewer, Del Rey revealed that her parents sent her to Kent school, a strict boarding school in Connecticut, at the age of 14 to help kick her drinking habit.

She said: “I was a big drinker at the time. I would drink every day. I would drink alone. I thought the whole concept was so fucking cool. A great deal of what I wrote on ‘Born To Die’ is about these wilderness years."

“My parents were worried, I was worried. I knew it was a problem when I liked it more than I liked doing anything else. I was like, ‘I’m fucked. I am totally fucked’.”

"Like, at first it’s fine and you think you have a dark side – it’s exciting – and then you realise the dark side wins every time if you decide to indulge in it. It’s also a completely different way of living when you know that…a different species of person. It was the worst thing that ever happened to me."

(^^^ Lizzy Grant was a teenage fan of Jim Morrison ^^^)

Well, the clock says it's time to close now
I guess I'd better go now
I'd really like to stay here all night
The cars crawl past all stuffed with eyes
Street lights share their hollow glow
Your brain seems bruised with numb surprise
Still one place to go
Still one place to go

Let me sleep all night in your soul kitchen
Warm my mind near your gentle stove
Turn me out and I'll wander baby
Stumblin' in the neon groves

Well, your fingers weave quick minarets
Speak in secret alphabets
I light another cigarette
Learn to forget, learn to forget
Learn to forget, learn to forget

You have left some important questions unanswered.
screwdriver.jpg

* Does the orange juice have pulp? Would a screwdriver be better or worse using fresh-squeezed orange juice?
* Are you drinking it from a highball glass? If not, what is your drinking vessel?
*Are you using a straw?
* Is there ice in your drink? It seems that pulp-free might work better with ice.

Thanks for distilling the issues. Incidentally, I have switched to oolong vodka by this point (highball glass, ice, red QT straw).

1. Today I went with pulp-free OJ (high-quality, non-GMO, etc.). You are absolutely right, I was just too lazy to juice the oranges.
2. Yes, highball glass.
3. Yes, red QT straw.
4. Crushed ice from QT.

Your oolong vodka initially sounded like a strange combination to me, as oolong tea is delicate and unlikely to balance the taste of vodka. My mistake was in assuming that you are drinking unsweetened oolong tea as I do. It is refreshing when on ice. Can you provide more information about your oolong tea?

As a preface, I just had a Black Russian (vodka / black Syrian coffee w/honey / rocks [highball/straw]) and am onto screwdrivers now. I tried to follow your suggestion and squeeze some oranges, but without the tools it's too much work.

As for vodka oolong, you are right in that there is too much vodka taste, even on the rocks. I do like oolong unsweetened.

In my exchange student days in Osaka, at the bar we served quite a few oolong drinks, although I don't recall ever mixing it with vodka. It was usually whiskey or some Korean liquor. Lately though I've been mixing with nothing but vodka, just lost the taste for everything else. Even beer and wine makes me sick.

What's your opinion on dry vodka martinis with olives?

I used to drink everything, especially dry martinis, including gin. In fact, when I worked square daytime jobs after college, my go-to first drink was a dry vodka martini with olive(s). I guess I am just going through a phase now where I only drink mixed vodka drinks.

Return to your roots with a very dry (no vermouth) vodka martini with a dirty martini mixer.

I have heard that the "three martini lunch" was pretty normal for the Langley guys at least through the 1970s and early 1980s.
I know from personal experience that liquid lunches for professionals of many walks of life were not frowned upon quite as much as they are now. That’s why I tried to schedule morning creative meetings at the ad agencies I helped manage.

Intelligence officers who worked as case officers also had to do a lot of drinking (or pretend to) as part of the job in those years, as going to parties with people in circles of interest and mingling was a big part of the job in foreign countries for both the Americans and Russians.

On the other hand, big conference calls have been steadily replacing big in-person meetings in the corporate world. You don't know who's shooting up heroin or snorting crack on a conference call, not to mention liquids.

I’ve done that many times. Secretly drinking non alcoholic and pretending it’s alcohol. No one can tell the difference. Better that, otherwise they find you a party pooper. If they don’t know they don’t think so. It is a drinking pressure out there. I am an outgoing person so never needed to drink to talk to people.

I know some guys very familiar with diplomacy in China. When Nixon visited China, they famously got him drunk with many toasts. He was served alcohol by the waiters, while the Chinese officials had water put in their glasses. The Chinese still use this tactic in many circumstances.

They are using prostitutes and women too, to get deals.
But I mean if a man is so stupid they fall for those tricks, women and alcohol, they deserve whatever they get.

In the 1990s the industrial enterprises in Russia were notorious for hiring the best prostitutes as receptionists and personal assistants. Apparently, it was sound business practice. I am not sure about other eras and countries?

Spies and embassy officials are warned about this, yet it still happens. They are usually quietly sent home and it doesn't become known outside a small circle.

There is a common tactic where the women has a "chance" meeting with the man. She has been given a profile of the target, and creates a psychological bond by offering "coincidental" similarities between herself and him. She agrees with his ideas and is really impressed by his job. It is surprising how often this works. Of course, women can fall for honey traps as well, but it is far less common.

Escorts who have model as their job description are still common for infiltrating different circles. Many of them actually do work as models.

I do love getting drunk. But not so much out on town. I am uncomfortable not having the possibility to get home when I want. I like to be able to drive. Waiting for a cab can be stressful for me. When I am done being out I want to get home and not ramble w drunk people 3am. Even when I am drunk I often find other drunk people stupid, they mirror me and then I feel stupid too. Being drunk at home alone or with people I like is the best. In my pyjamas.

In China they use hookers even for small business meetings. My sister husband was expanding a business to China from Europe. Only 20 employees in Italy and not really that huge business. Even in the meetings before making the deal, hookers there. They want investors badly.
Think about Russia lol that can probably be even worse, since investing in Russia is a risky business to say it mildly.

Do you mean situations where the businessmen know the women are hookers? In China, it is very common to film men with women in case the material becomes useful. There was a bar a few blocks from where many embassy people were housed in Beijing that was notorious for this. Women would take men back to apartments set up with cameras. They would pretend it was their apartment, but it really was for these operations. Embassy people were warned about the bar, but some people still fell for it.

Hotels are also often equipped with cameras, as is the case in Russia. I know a guy who found a camera in the lamp above his hotel work area, and most are much harder to discover.

Regarding women, during the Cold War, KGB guys thought Americans were easy prey for honey traps because they have "foolish" romantic notions and are naive about women.

To follow up, it's a very ordinary 100-bag box of tea. Wei-chuan oolong, made in China.

What I found peculiar about my first trip to China was being constantly surrounded by prostitutes while I myself was traveling in the capacity of an escort. I didn't get to experience occupational oversaturation of that sort until I attended law school years later.

Yeah, I hate going out on weekends too. Nothing like getting trashed on a Monday morning at a busy Starbucks uptown. :-D
I went out with my mother in the summer. Here it’s sunny almost 24/7 that time. She also doesn’t like to stand and wait for a cab. So we walked. In high heels. When I started to complain about pain in feet she told me to walk barefoot on the side road. I learned from the best.
