Return to your roots with a very dry (no vermouth) vodka martini with a dirty martini mixer.
I guess I could go for 3/4 olive juice and 1/4 vodka, which would certainly qualify as VERY DIRTY, but I am not sure it would be considered VERY DRY under Churchill.

I know from personal experience that liquid lunches for professionals of many walks of life were not frowned upon quite as much as they are now. That’s why I tried to schedule morning creative meetings at the ad agencies I helped manage.
Intelligence officers who worked as case officers also had to do a lot of drinking (or pretend to) as part of the job in those years, as going to parties with people in circles of interest and mingling was a big part of the job in foreign countries for both the Americans and Russians.

I’ve done that many times. Secretly drinking non alcoholic and pretending it’s alcohol. No one can tell the difference. Better that, otherwise they find you a party pooper. If they don’t know they don’t think so. It is a drinking pressure out there. I am an outgoing person so never needed to drink to talk to people.

I know some guys very familiar with diplomacy in China. When Nixon visited China, they famously got him drunk with many toasts. He was served alcohol by the waiters, while the Chinese officials had water put in their glasses. The Chinese still use this tactic in many circumstances.

In China they use hookers even for small business meetings. My sister husband was expanding a business to China from Europe. Only 20 employees in Italy and not really that huge business. Even in the meetings before making the deal, hookers there. They want investors badly.
Do you mean situations where the businessmen know the women are hookers? In China, it is very common to film men with women in case the material becomes useful. There was a bar a few blocks from where many embassy people were housed in Beijing that was notorious for this. Women would take men back to apartments set up with cameras. They would pretend it was their apartment, but it really was for these operations. Embassy people were warned about the bar, but some people still fell for it.
American men still are, hence women from the East. They still think they are more easy going than other women, to be surprised a few years later

What I found peculiar about my first trip to China was being constantly surrounded by prostitutes while I myself was traveling in the capacity of an escort. I didn't get to experience occupational oversaturation of that sort until I attended law school years later.
