HELP me with lifelong quest : Do you know these books/stories?

Gundam

Semi-Pro
Hi all,

There are things I have/had been trying to find what they are since my childhood.
For example,
1. Hot Butter's Popcorn : Heard it when I was very young but took long time for me to find out what the song is.

2.The Bridge On The River Kwai: Trek to the bridge : Another tune I heard when I was a young boy. Somehow I never watched this movie until a couple years ago and voila!

I am still looking for the answers for these. Can you help me?
I believe these are short stories or adapted versions for children. I read them ~30 years ago but don't remember the titles.

1. I think it's a fishing village. There are 3 friends. One very strong, daring flamboyant boy. Another boy who is very nice and wise but not charismatic as the first one. A girl who is very nice and cares about those boys. Of course, the girl married the 1st boy who became a sailer (the second has a safer job). Then there was a terrible storm and his ship was lost. After some years of waiting, the girl became the wife of the 2nd boy. With children and happy home this time. But it turned out the 1st boy/man wasn't killed. After years of struggle and journey, finally he has returned to the village. Once a handsome, tall boy he was. But now he is like a sick beggar after all the troubles he went through. And maybe more caring mind. Somehow, he found where his wife lives but at the doorstep, he realized she was now the wife of his friend, happy, stable, smiling, laughing with her new happy family and kind husband. Without knocking the door, he turned back and began walking away to leave the town. Then a man who thought he recognized him asked "Aren't you...?". But he only said "I don't know him" and walked away.

2. There was a celebrating party for a world famous climber (I kina remember the mountain was not in Himalaya but in north america). The mountain was known to be a very tough one to climb and no one had been able to conquer it until he did. At the party with town people and friends, the famous climber met an old but very happy looking couple. The husband asked the climber if there wasn't anything odd. Then the climber agreed there was. When he was trying to overcome the final obstacle (let's say, a very dangerous cliff), he found there were some sort of 'steps' so conveniently dug on the cliff as if someone made them long time ago, which helped him greatly to reach the summit. It turned out, long time ago (say 60 years), when the husband proposed to the wife, she replied "If I see a star landed on the submit of the mountain" (actually she was meaning NO). Then then the young and brave man made up his mind to climb the peak risking his life, made holes during his struggle, finally reach the top and lit a big lamp to win his bride. And they lived happily ever after.

I'd like to find out these stories before I get too old and lose my curiosity. It's been 30+ years since I read these stories.

Any input will be very helpful. Thanks in advance,

Gundam.
