Hey, I have always had some trouble with my two handed backhand. I have a habit of trying to use my wrists to generate the power. I am right-handed, and I can't seem to grasp how 90% of the backhand power should involve the left hand. Do you guys have any tips or suggestions to help overcome this problem? Thanks

No, 90% should not come from left hand, left hand is just there to guide you.
Use more rotation on your torso to generate more power. Make sure your contact point is before your right knee and push forward, not up. Wrist should be firm, and when starting to swing, your butt cap should point in the direction of the ball.

It wouldnt make sense if its left handed that does 10% if hes right handed. The right hand is the guide while left is like a left handed forehand.

That seems to be what the common teaching is. Not really sure but i tend to try use my left hand to generate power on my 2hbh (i'm left-handed). Could be the reason my bh is soo much crappier

there are different ways to hit a 2 handed backhand. I used to hit it with my left hand, then after hearing what agassi had to say, I switched to my right hand. and almost imediately I was hitting the backhand better than ever. now a few months later, it is definantly alteast 3times better than it ever was. watch vids of agassi and think right hand. its almost like a one handed backhand with the left hand on it as well. trust me please. don't stiffen your wrist, keep them relaxed, you'll use them naturally. don't think about the bud of the racquet or anything like that, just watch the ball and make contact. its ALMOST like a left handed baseball swing. just watch agassi, you'll see.

Joe is completely correct, there isn't just one way to hit the 2handed backhand. What feels comfortable to you? I can hit it both ways but I prefer a dominant left hand because it feels smooth and stable to me. However, if you are having wrist problems (and Agassi mentioned this as well) then using a right hand dominant 2hand backhand does allow a smoother racquet release on the stroke. Also, I've found it's alot harder to muscle the ball.

I prefer the left hand dominant. So really it's up to you. If you get super technical one might be superior but honestly does it matter? It's like how I've always view the pull vs. push forehand debates. Some of these people spend so much time trying be CERTAIN they are hitting the "pull" (could be either one in the ") type of forehand that they miss out on practice. If they went out and hit practiced they could hit a better push then the pull they are so desperately trying to hit. (once again, push or pull could be reversed)

As long as your techinque isn't hurting you, get out and play. I've seen quite a number of people in supers that don't have that great of form but they have become extremely adept at their style of hitting.

The above two posters are correct: there are many different ways to hit a 2hbh. No matter which way you hit it, you will want to use your shoulder rotation and weight tranfer to generate most of your power. Your wrists should be relaxed and the motion should be fluid.

I think that the 2h backhand should be one of the least wristy shots. Perhaps you should practice some lefthanded forehands to get a better feel of the shot. Otherwise, you could hit while hold in the racquet only with the thump and index finger of the right hand.
