please help me put together the best combo for what im looking for. price is not a concern i just want the best.

i have been using babolat vs team gut in my mains and either nxt ornrg in the crosses. it plays nice but im looking at other options as well.

im a 4.5 player who covets feel and spin over durability. i must have control over power. im in my 40's so im wary of hard stings like poly.

should i be using gut in my mains or start using it in my crosses? i love the strings to pocket the ball but i dont want it to trampoline it either. should i consider using a combo of gut and luxilon rough? if so, what so i use in my mains?

thanks for any replies!

You will find much more playabilty by switching your gut to your crosses. Also I think you will find durability even though that isnt a problem for you.

Wha? The mains are the dominant string and gut has the highest playability of any string. Therefore maximizing playability in a hybrid would have the gut in the mains.

If you like the feel of pocketing the ball and you want spin, keep the gut in the mains and put a poly in the crosses. Luxilon ALU is great. It minimizes string movement for maximum bite and will dampen the trampoline feel of the gut.

I use Lux ALU mains and gut crosses in my PK Laver S frames. I have the opposite set-up in a PS 6.0 95. I like the way both of these hybrids play and also the lack of string movement.

The best combo i have found is pacific tough gut in the mains+gamma tnt2 proplus in the x's.Both in 17 gauge.

I use luxilon ALU rough 16 in the mains and gamma professional 16 in the crosses on a babolat pure drive + strung at 65 and its gotten me to top 100 in the nation . . . so i guess it works;)

Definitely use gut in the mains. BDF Perf or Tonic 16 works great. Then use Gosen Sheep Micro 17 in the crosses. Cuts the cost in half and plays better than a full gut job IMHO. The Gosen tames some of the gut power without robbing the feel. I've used this setup in everything from a Dunlop MaxPly McEnroe to a Prince Hornet TT MP with great results. Prince Syn Gut works just as well in the crosses.

I second this.

thanks a lot for all the replies guys. i will try some of these other combos. the next one im trying in my prestige is bde 17 in the mains and i am still looking for a good cross to go with it. im thinking about luxilon but worried about it being harsh on the old elbow and i also dont have a clue about string tension. my mains are at 63 usually with gut.

Exactly what I use, BDE Preformance, Gosen Sheep Micro 17 in the crosses. I like the way it plays.

I agree with LowProfile. Gut mains and Lux ALU crosses will maximize your spin. Federer doesn't use this combo because of the feel. He uses this combo because it's important to his game that he gets maximum spin in his shots.

Luxilon strings have higher lubricity than other "poly's" because they incorporate Teflon. The slipperiness of the Teflon-treated Luxilon minimizes friction between the crosses and the mains. This allows the mains to move with more freedom. That way, the mains can be pulled down further before they snap back up, imparting more energy into ball spin. It seems like you have less string movement, but in actuality, it's just that the strings move more easily, so that they are always able to return to their original position. And by using gut mains, you will have maximum elasticity where you need it.
