help selecting shoes; plantar fasciitis, knee injury

Shoes are getting to be very important as I have a bad knee and occasional plantar fasciitis;
but the descriptions for which shoes are best for which foot are vague;
is there a link to a site w/ measurements or so forth saying:

what a medium or wide foot is? how many cm?
what a pronator foot is?
how do you know if you need arch support? (For this though, I'm putting in powerstep inserts most likely)

From the board it looks like Addidas Barricudas (type II) are probably the best for me (anyone else w/ plantar or bad knees please chime in) and only concern is that "glove fit" may be too much.
I wear size 11.5 - 12.0s.

My current pair is Yonex ShT 298; while I do not blame it for my knee problems, I think I'd rather get something different. I used to wear Prince Quicktrack which is long discontinued and I do not know how the recent Prine lines compare.

Appreciate any advice.

The Prince T-10's are very comfortable and very supportive with excellent cushioning. You might want to give them a look.

If you have a running shoe store locally, go there, describe the problem, let them find a shoe that provides stability like the Brooks Beast. This will give you an idea what you need. Personally, if your instep bulges when you wear them, the shoe is not supportive. New Balance and Head are the only companies that have support. Wore the Adidas A3 shoe with no problems though. Always wondered if the ankle supports like ASO help this problem?

THanks for the advice; I'll try the prince t10s.
Someone said the Prince QT Scream is an update of the quicktrak so I'll try those as well.

I've had poor luck w/ footlocker; they seem to know a lot about basketball but are clueless about tennis. So I've been buying shoes online; not ideal. I don't wear Nikes but I may try a large sporting store.

I've had terrible luck with Price shoes. I bought a pair and the pain was so bad afterwords I thought I was going to have to quit playing tennis. Years later I finally had to get orthotics ( this year). I'm in the process of finding a pair that will work with orthotics. I've think the Reebok and Asics brand may be my best bet for comfort. Style is always way down on my list. I'd rather feel comfortable and have no pain vs looking stylish. IMHO.

Roforot, you and I are in the same boat. PF and knee issues. Stay away from the Barricade II. It's a great shoe, but with improper flex for people who have PF. The Barricade III fixes that problem and it now flexes at the forefoot and not the arch. Either one will work with orthotics or powersteps. In fact, I use Powersteps in mine.

If this helps, I got orthotics and they fit perfectly in my new Asics gel challenger IV. Very nice shoe by the way, supportice and comfortable. You'll have to try the shoes with the orthotics though, because they may change the fit.

Good luck!

shoes...plantar fascitis

i've been battling w/ plantar fascitis for some time...i am SLOWLY recovering but the rule is shoes that are stiff towards the heels and flexible at toe, w/ lots of arch support...most modern tennis shoes are designed this way, so i would go with those that fit best...i've been wearing the K-Swiss 7.0 and it's worked out well...
when i don't play tennis, i wear earth shoes with reverse heels, and every since, my plantar has been improving...many folks don't recommend but surprisingly, many people who have tried them have shown signs of improvement...be sure to stretch/exercise for plantar...while i watch TV, i get the bottle of vodka from the freezer and roll w/ bottom of feet...
good luck!

plantar fasciitis... That is the shooting pain up the arch right? I think I might have that... Right now i am not medically covered so I bought myself one of those insoles. So far it helps a little and sometimes I still get the pain. Is there anything you guys recommend? I am playing on adidas feather 2 and have a Barricudas next in line. Any advice?

In fact it can show up at your heel too, where the fascia is anchored I guess ... that's where I had it.

The conclusion in another thread was that you need shoes which are flexible in the right spot (see link above) and of which the heel isn't too low, which seems to put more pressure on the fascia ...

Make some searches and "heel" "plantar" in the Health forum ...

I am using Nike Air Oscillates (great, but unavailable now), Wilson ProStaff 710 and 850cc, all with Spenco full-length heel supports ($30). These seem to be safe.

I did two things which solved my plantar fasciitis problems plus bone spur issues.

1. Had a custom pair of Orthotics made $300
2. Switched to the Prince T10 shoes

The Prince T10's are the best shoes I have ever used, very easy on the heel area. 6 month wear warranty

Thanks for the info. I have not been able to order the T10s in my size!
Through a miscommunication, I ordered Barricades II (instead of the IIIs) and have been very happy with them so far.
In Rumjungle's post, he critiques the flex; however when I did the "Show Pushdown test" from http://www.drpribut.com/sports/heelhtm.htm they seem to flex in the correct (forefoot) position.
I will wait a little longer w/ these shoes;
However may try the t10s and research the IIIs and IVs as well.

I agree the T10's are great. I would not reccomend the Babolat Team All Court's though. Right out of the box they were painful, and never got better. That is when my PF started. Those are just my experiences though.
