Henman: Murray can win Wimbledon
Tim Henman backs Andy Murray to win Wimbledon

Tim Henman believes Andy Murray can defy the odds and win Wimbledon this year.

Murray, who has succeeded Henman as the only realistic home challenger in either the men's or women's singles, begins his title bid against mercurial Frenchman Fabrice Santoro next week.

Asked if the 21-year-old could lift the title this year, Henman told the Daily Telegraph: "He could. Yes, he could. It's all about what happens on the day."

But Henman is less optimistic about the prospects of the other home competitors at SW19.

"It's not good is it?" he said of the quality behind Murray. "In Britain, we've got Andy, then a huge void.

"Our juniors are good - we've always had good juniors but they've been lacking mentally when they take the step up. They're not strong enough or tough enough mentally, and not aware of what the task is.

"The good thing now is that we have some great coaches who are there to help them make the transition.

"I think we also need to work harder to get kids to compete. It's crucial that we get them into regular competition. Not just hitting balls."

LOL!!!!

well ok, everybody can get drunk by their favorite player's performance. Let's see what happens. Hopefully Rafa's knee is fine and he can play 100%.

The more these former pros talk, the dumber they sound. So he actually believes Andy can have a 4 hour match with Gasquet, get past Nadal, who's sure to run him, beat Schuettler/Clement in the semifinals, and then take on Fed/Safin/Lopez/ or Ancic? Right, Tim! They get on my nerves so bad talking so silly!

I could see Murray beating Arnaud Clement (FRA). That's about it. Nadal? What a joke. Maybe if he played terribly and was injured severely.

That would set him up to beat Fed, over whom he has a winning record. If he was to beat Nadal, that would be the consolation prize. Fed would be next!

It's not like it's a 10-0 winning record. He beat Fed two times in an early rounds(first round in Dubai and beating Fed in Cinncinati after Fed won Montreal,90% of players who win Montreal lose in Cinncinati),that's no indicaton to me that he can beat Fed in a slam and at Wimbledon especially so no,IMO Fed wouldn't be next but Murray won't get past Nadal so it doesn't matter(I personally think Nadal will put the beatdown on him and won't allow the crowd to get into the match).

Looks like Henman has been hanging too much in British pubs since his retirement.

Rather silly, isn't it? He's another one that said very little during his playing days, now comes out saying something like this. Last we heard, he was calling Andy a "miserable git," now he has all this confidence in him? Or, was he a miserable git because you feel he has the talent to go further than you did?

I don't think the miserable git comment was made in bad intention,I think they're friends and Henman meant that as a joke mostly.

I know, dude, chill. I highly doubt Murray would get to his first quarter, first semi, and first final of a grand slam without suffering a bout of nerves and being totally exhausted to boot. I was just responding to someone who was bad mouthing the ultra hot and sexy Nadal. There's no way Murray's beating Fed in his first ever final. That would be unfathomable!

I dunno. THey could get pretty dirty. I mean like...Remember what they did to Mcenroe? The went ballistic on him.

Well,we'll be on the same side in Nadal-Murray match as I'll be rooting for Nadal to silence the crowd.I didn't like the British crowd cheering Gasquet doublefaults and Murray encouraging their behaviour all the time, nothing wrong with having the crowd support but there's a fine line and Murray crossed it with his behaviour IMO.

You guys are blowing this out of proportion. The guy didn't say Murray will win Wimbledon, only that he has the potential, which a lot of a people have said. And if you read the rest of the article, he still has Federer as the favorite, and he also mentions Nadal and Djokovic as the next most serious contenders. Now that Djokovic is out and Murray (whom he called a 'dangerous floater) is still in, he doesn't seem so crazy. :|

I fell asleep at the point where I thought it was a foregone conclusion that Gasquet would win, only to wake up two hours later and see Murray acting like a wildman. But, he had reason to celebrate. So did the British fans. I mean Henman disappointed them dearly over the years, now they finally feel they have someone to cheer on. Good for them, it's been a long drought!

Don't you get it?

Henman says it because it's what the British public want to hear and what the BBC, who employ him, need to get more hype and increase the people tuning in to watch their programme.

Quite simple really.

Well maybe, especially if Nadal's knee has indeed problem. Otherwise, Nadal will dominate the match, I think. And Nadal is too solid to let the match slip away like the immature Gasquet....

Don't worry, this is his third attempt and it could have been his fourth had he not hurt his wrist in Hamburg last year.

I think he's got a good shot.

If he can get past Nadal, it will give him enough confidence to win Wimby 08!!!! Hopefully his 5 set thriller against Gasquet has given him enough confidence.

I agree with this.

I think Safin can win Wimbledon this year, so I suppose I'll go back to the pubs with Henman. ;)

Djokovic is shaking his head and drinking right now remembering the word: "Safin" as in "Isn't that guy that all those blokes on TW said was washed up, done, should retire and could never win again....? THAT Safin?"

Your laughing at him only makes me want Murray to win more. Although, I'd like to see Rafa beat Roger in the finals. Murray has had amazing matches with Rafa before (AO 2007). I'll bet that 13,000 of the 15,000 tomorrow morning are NOT backing a Spaniard.

They play matches because the winner is not a fore-gone conclusion prior to playing them. Should Murray come through--please remember your arrogant post...

Surprisingly, this is not as crazy of a post as it would have been two weeks ago...there is actually validity to this....:)

Haha yeah. Such talent. He's not even playing well if you listen to him, just "solid." He's got a good year or two upcoming I predict. As for the rest of this tourney, well, if he gets through tomorrow I think he just might win it all. He's got the game. He just has to remember to pack it in the bag along with the racquets.

Maybe Marat met up with "Maneater" and she has inspired him?????

Henman didn't say Murray ill win Wimbledon this year. He said Murray's got it in him, so had Tim himself, doesn't mean he did. I think every one of the last 8 'can' win. He said this on the BBC in a Wimbledon update I think. I don't thin he'd make himself very popular if he said it would be a really one-sided game against Nadal and Murray should be happy if he wins 5 games.

You Englichman are too funny and ridiculously sour, Murrays not even English, so even if he does win, it doesnt realllllllllly court

I noticed that. Until he made it into the quarters, he was a Scot! Now that he has some success, he's a Brit.

Kinda' like the French claiming Mary Pierce after she won the French Open. :???:

(I love Bud Collins quote on this, "Mary Pierce is about as french as a Ford Edsel.")

hehe guys, no i stayed at home, he does not like his girlfriends at matches anymore apparently lol

I got abit injured playing golf last night so i couldnt make it :-(

i preffer to watch it at home, i can scream and yell all i want and wimbledon is a tease, u see them and cant go near them :-(

i am soooo happy he's doing so well. i'm realistic about the next match, im hoping he will at LEAST break rogers serve once or twice. I think you only need 24 points to win a set without going to deuce, so marat should count... 24, 23, 22.....3,2,1, first set.. yea he should do that 3 times and win the match.. if only!

he looks amazing, have u seen his beautiful light brown locks... amaazzzzing
